I hereby request confirmation that I have completed the language proficiency requirement for my
degree program based on one of the following criteria:
I have the required level (see reverse) of university-level coursework in a foreign language (with a grade of B
or higher in the most advanced language course taken in the final semester) completed no more than three
academic years before the time of enrollment in the Elliott School graduate program.
(Please attach transcript and documentation of course level and description from institution's website or Bulletin.)

During my graduate studies at the Elliott School, I have completed the required semester level (see reverse) of
foreign language coursework at GW (or another higher education institution approved by Elliott School
Academic Programs) with a grade of B or higher. With the approval of the relevant Program Director and Academic
Advisor, students may also fulfill the requirement by completing a foreign-language course comparable to the GW year/semester
course or a content-based course conducted in a foreign language (with a grade equivalent to a B or higher) at one of the Elliott
School international partner institutions. (Please attach transcript and documentation of course level and description from

Language Proficiency Requirements
Requirements for Global Communication, International Affairs, International Development
Studies, International Studies (MIS), and Security Policy Studies:
Prior Coursework
Having earned a grade of a B or higher in a sixth semester university-level advanced language course
completed no more than three years prior to enrollment in the Elliott School Master's Degree Program.
Current Coursework
Having earned a grade of a B or higher in a sixth semester university-level advanced language course at
GW (or another higher education institution approved by Elliott School Academic Programs including
the Elliott School exchange partner institutions) while enrolled in the Elliott School's Master's Degree
Program.
Elliott School Exam
Passing the Elliott School-administered foreign language proficiency reading and speaking examination
(offered once in the fall and once in the spring semester) at the required level of proficiency at any point
during enrollment. Students have three opportunities to pass this proficiency examination. Failure to
pass the exam for a third time will result in dismissal from the program. (This form is not required.)

Professional Skills Course
Achieving the required proficiency level in a reading and speaking examination administered by an
Elliott School-approved foreign-language assessment institution while enrolled in the Elliott School's
Master's Degree Program.
Demonstration of the required foreign language proficiency level in a foreign language professional
skills course offered through the Elliott School. The instructor will test the student during this foreign
language skills course to determine if the required proficiency level has been achieved. (This form is
not required.)
Requirements for International Trade and Investment Policy (ITIP):
Prior Coursework
Having earned a grade of a B or higher in a fourth semester university-level advanced language course
completed no more than three years prior to enrollment in the Elliott School Master's Degree Program.
Current Coursework
Having earned a grade of a B or higher in a fourth semester university-level advanced language course
(or another higher education institution approved by Elliott School Academic Programs including the
Elliott School exchange partner institutions) while enrolled in the Elliott School's Master's Degree
Program.
Elliott School Exam
