The April planting weather started out perfect, but before we got our hopes up for a similar month of May, the rains started and May went down as one of the wettest on record. Only outstanding teamwork between the Ag department, our growers and our greenhouses, enabled us to get the crop planted. Weather extremes are still a challenge. The first ten days of pack will be ones to remember for a long time. There used to be an old television commercial asking “how to do you spell relief”? All of us are probably asking that same question as we deal with the extreme heat that has come our way. This same time period last year was the hottest stretch of weather we had during the whole 2009 growing season, but 2010 is averaging about five degrees warmer each day. As I write this on August 16th, both Orestes and Geneva are running hard, the quality is good and the temperature has fallen from the mid 90’s to a comfortable 85 degrees. What is RGi (pronounced Reggie)? It is our newest form of communication here at Red Gold. It was introduced on July 12, and we are excited about having yet another way to multi-message our communication efforts! RGi will grow into a great one-stop site for information that used to appear on bulletin boards, and what seems like hundreds of internal emails. Although we will continue to put information on the bulletin boards, RGi will cover much more than what can be posted on a board, such as the company phone list…how handy is that? RGi currently displays all internal news and announcements, as well as E3, HR and IT information. Eventually it will hold all Safety news and documents, along with the Document Control Center, which will be super convenient. When employees open their Internet Browser, RGi will automatically appear. For information that ‘you need to know today’, just read the RGi Home page. To find out information regarding HR, IT or any of the E3 teams, click on the appropriately named tabs. As employees realize that they are getting far less internal announcement emails, they will need to develop a habit of opening their Internet Browser, so that they will always have RGi at their fingertips. As this new communication system grows, we hope to put RGi at the computer kiosks in the manufacturing facilities for all employees. It will then be used for sign-ups for company activities, events, document sharing, checking vacation days and more! If you haven’t ‘been on’ RGi yet, you are certainly missing a very innovative communication tool...click on your Internet at work…see what you are missing! There were many changes made to the Orestes plant to make room for the addition of a new 14.5 oz diced line. (See related article) Relocating sorting tables and choppers, empty can depalletizers, full can palletizers, over a mile of can track and new control systems were just a few of those changes. So on the morning of July 27, as the first truck of the 2010 season was unloaded, the Orestes team was prepared for a challenging start-up. The plant did have several pages of modifications to make, but overall, the new changes went better than expected. Brian and Tina presented a gift from the Reichart Family to be used for a new entrance to the Food Science Building at Purdue University, in honor of Dr. Nelson’s retirement. The Reichart family gift will also fund for the next five years, a graduate student’s first year of studies. Geneva’s trial day went well, all the new improvements operated as planned. The addition of the four new #10 cookers and cooler modification came up to speed quickly. Pictured above are Dr. Phillip Nelson, Tina Anderson, Brian Reichart and Prof. Suzanne Nielson. Both plants did an excellent job in preparing for the 2010 season. Training new employees, fine tuning all our production lines, getting the plants efficiencies up to our goals and our focusing on quality are top priorities as we begin the season. KETCHUP KORNER The Elwood facility is anxious and ready to start; they are scheduled to begin the week of August 23rd. The humid 95° heat has been very demanding on all of the workers in the factories and the fields, but we are pleased with tomato quality, the equipment and the can-do attitude and effort from everyone. Thank You! This is a place where you can catch up (Get it?) on news, fun facts, and items of interest about our products, people, and activities. Red Gold produces items for both our own brand labels and private brand customers. This means a lot of labels go through each of our facilities. Our plants have a total of nearly 5,000 SKUs, or stock keeping units. These stock keeping units relate to the label UPC so you can see we have a lot to keep track of! Quarterly Definitions A hot break is a piece of equipment that performs the “hot breaking” process on our tomato stock. This process applies heat to the tomatoes to deactivate the pectinase enzymes that naturally occur in the tomatoes. These enzymes break down tomato pectin, which causes tomato product to be thinner. Cold break is a term that refers to a lower temperature of “hot breaking” the tomato stock. This allows some natural breakdown of the pectin and creates a thinner product. TRAVELIN MAN Just wanted to drop a line and say “Hi” to my friends back home. I’ve had a busy, fun-filled summer traveling around meeting all my wonderful Red Gold Tomato fans. I have become a famous, well-loved celebrity “mater” and a member of the Secret Society of Mascots. I even have my own right-hand-man, a great assistant who keeps me hoppin’. Ever since Red Gold partnered with CEDAR FAIR ENTERTAINMENT, I have been in high demand! I spent the Fourth of July Holiday at Cedar Point and Soak City in Sandusky, Ohio. Then I headed to Michigan’s Adventure Amusement park in Muskegon, MI , home of the Shivering Timbers roller coaster, where one little girl gave me a big hug and said to me, “I love you Stewie the Tomato”! How sweet is that?! In addition, the Indiana State Fair is keeping me busy for 17 days! My favorite food at the Indiana State Fair is a corn dog with Red Gold Ketchup, of course! Everywhere I go, people are so friendly. I’ve been called “handsome,” “good looking” and even “Stew-able”! A little kid even called me a “Toe-May-Toe”. I create my own parade, and I have the opportunity to represent our great company, not to mention helping myself to some Red Gold Ketchup when hungry. Of course on occasion, I take a break from my celebrity status to go on a joyride on the Merry-Go-Round or Ferris Wheel! My assistant and I are on our way to the next photo shoot, so I gotta run, but I’ll be in touch soon! Be sure to check out the Red Gold Tomatoes Facebook page for updates of my wonderful travels! A Day in the Life … Document Control Coordinator Have you ever stopped to think about how many documents Red Gold may have, or how all these documents are maintained and reviewed? If so, Susan Woodcox, Red Gold’s Document Control Coordinator, is the lady to ask! We recently had the opportunity to discuss with Susan what this new position really entails… Your title is Document Control Coordinator. What documents do you help maintain? What department does this position fall under? I help maintain SOPs, Work Instructions, Training/Tests, One Point Lessons, Visual Aids, CIL, Policies, and forms. I am in Corporate Quality, reporting directly to Joi Johnson; Red Gold’s SQF Practitioner/Coordinator. This is a new position, right? Before you came to Red Gold, how were all of these documents maintained? Yes, it is a new position. No one had ever been able to be fully dedicated to it, which was a problem. Susan Woodcox Was there any specific thing that occurred that required Red Gold to have a Document Control Coordinator? The new audit we undergo annually, SQF, requires that we have a method in place for ensuring personnel have access to current documents. Furthermore, this document control shall be documented and implemented. What is the difference between a SOP and a Work Instruction? A SOP is a general outline of what will be done and who will be responsible for making sure it gets done a certain way at a specified time. It also includes the why the document is being created. A Work Instruction is a logical step-by-step sequence or a detailed breakdown of your SOP process table. Have you found that employees have needed a little more training than what you would have thought? Yes, we still have a long way to go in understanding not only how our system works but how to write short, concise documents. How many SOPs are there at Red Gold? Does each department need and use SOPs or Work Instructions? We currently have 2403 active documents in our DCC. All departments have SOPs or work instructions for something… What do you do to help assure that our SOPs are current and accurate? I send out monthly links to all departments, at all the plants and DC, along with all the documents that are past due. It is the responsibility of the department manager to ensure they have accurate and current information. I only track the documents and make sure we are following our current process and using the correct format. What have you done to help people stay on top of their SOPs? When I first started, I realized that part of the problem of our document control system was understanding and compliance. So in January or February, I trained over 219 employees in our correct process for the Document Control Center. We have to start back to the basics and build from there. I call it my six year plan. We are still in a learning process and will be for a couple more years. As far as keeping people on top of their SOPs, I send out monthly reminders, as well as set up a meeting with the department head to establish a time line to get their documents up to date. Establishing accountability is critical in any process, if it is to be sustained correctly and efficiently. Are there any changes to come with how we document and control our SOPs and Work Instructions? Yes, I am currently loading the Document Control Center into our SharePoint site. Training on this will occur in November and December. The Shared S Drive will no longer be utilized for the Document Control Center once training is complete. What is your favorite part about working at Red Gold as the Document Control Coordinator? Working with all the different personalities… RED GOLD ALL STARS ELWOOD MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT The department consists of: 1 Manager, 3 Supervisors, 1 Planner, 4 Leads, 4 Parts Room Clerks, 3 Boiler Operators, 7 Electricians and 29 Mechanics. What we do: Our department’s staff brings together diverse backgrounds in maintenance, with experience ranging from aircraft, automotive, electronics manufacturing, food production, law enforcement, sales and service, security, nuclear power, military, and engineering. We blend this experience into an effective team, applying our knowledge to improve our processes and productivity. We are constantly striving to better support our production facility. We have developed an alternative work schedule to allow us to improve quality of work life, while continuing to meet our more challenging maintenance requirements. First Shift We are automating our inventory and ordering process to ensure we have the right amount of parts to support our equipment. Did You Know? • We have processed 40,380 work orders in the past year - the equivalent of 111 everyday! • We support the maintenance and year-around operation of over 1,800 pieces of equipment • We track, inventory and store over 20,000 unique items in our stock room • We support and maintain a year-around Waste Water Treatment Facility, RG Transport Offices, North D St., Engineering Offices and other warehousing Second Shift • 5 Maintenance team members have been selected as Employee of the Month in the past year • Our team has over 282 years of maintenance experience at Red Gold and over 725 years total maintenance experience • We support Peak Performance with the following program graduates: o 3 Green Belts o 1 Red Belt o 2 CIL o 2 Changeover Effectiveness o 3 Problem Solving o 1 Non-Value Added AWARD PRIVATE LABEL Red Gold was awarded the coveted Private Brand Supplier of the Year for 2010, at Hy-Vee’s recent Supplier Appreciation Day in West Des Moines, IA The award was presented by Hy-Vee’s President, Randy Edeker, and is based on a list of criteria including sales performance, flexibility, fill rate, quality, and innovation. “This award is truly an honor to receive, and Red Gold deserves it,” says Eric Long, Senior Business Manager. “Curt Edmondson, Doug VanCleave and the rest of the Red Gold team are great partners to Hy-Vee, Topco and Daymon.” Red Gold has seen two consecutive years of solid sales growth, including a great year on fresh pack tomatoes. The company worked with Topco to significantly reduce Hy-Vee’s lead-time through a collaborative rapid replenishment system, and has been very accommodating to Hy-Vee’s frequent promotional requests. All of this on top of maintaining excellent quality and excellent fill rates. Edeker was quoted as saying that “Red Gold truly has an unrelenting dedication to their product and their customers, and their entire team is a pleasure to work with.” Third Shift Line 9 Flying High If you have been in Orestes lately, the skyline (was there one?) has changed considerably. Approach the Orestes plant on Oak Street from either the east or the west, and it appears momentarily that a very large trailer with a Red Gold emblem is parked across the road. As you get closer, it appears that a very large trailer is in the air! Actually, it is our 102 foot long/15 foot high bridge, made of 84,000 pounds of steel, with over one mile of can cables; transporting both empty and full cans to and from our new building, 12A! 12A, a 23,750 square foot building was built right on top of our newly asphalted parking lot, making room for our newest line, #9. Line #9 is dedicated to our 14.5 ounce tomato items and will run 700 cans per minute. 12A also houses four ergonomically correct full-can brite stackers, six empty can depalletizers, three rotary cookers and three coolers for several of our existing lines. Teams of employees helped design the equipment layout. The fastest line is at the closest point to the empty cans that are being brought over from the adjacent warehouse. This will decrease the amount of cans needed to be brought over at a time, and will eliminate some of the wastes associated with waiting and movement. Also, we look forward to less ‘empty can’ shuttles and a reduction in dents! To complete Line #9, we have great new equipment: color sorter, elevators, Hot Break, choppers, dicer, and an awesome filler/seamer! A Busy Day for Growers Many friends of Red Gold and the agriculture industry along with 100% of our growers attended ‘The Annual Red Gold Growers Field Day’ held Wednesday, July 28. This year, the day began by showcasing the Red Gold hybrid tomato variety and commercial product trials. One of the highlights of this year’s events was the in-field demonstrations of three new types of crop sprayers. These new designs give a more accurate placement of crop materials in the dense canopy of tomatoes. Special types of paper were placed within the plant canopy to measure the coverage of each of the sprayer types and information was given by all the representatives about their products. Mother Nature provided her own brand of crop coverage with a surprise rain shower that actually felt kind of good on such a hot day. Members of the Ambassador team gave tours to approximately 170 people of the Orestes facility’s new buildings and equipment that have been installed since the last harvest season. The evening program featured the traditional mouth-watering pork chops that all have come to crave over the years. Growers made yield guesses on their upcoming crops and when they thought their harvest might begin. Rosalind Leeck from the Indiana Department of Agriculture, Division of Soil and Water Conservation presented the Red Gold Stewardship and Conservation Award to Rohrs Brothers of Deshler, OH. The Rohrs will receive a $1000 scholarship award. McKillip Farms of Wabash received the second place award of a $500 scholarship. A second chance drawing of all who entered the contest was held with Mike and Kathy Forche of Blissfield, MI having their name drawn. All winners will receive extra loads during harvest as additional prizes, a coveted prize by all growers. Brian Reichart, President and CEO highlighted the new expansions for the year at all Red Gold facilities, but particularly at the Orestes plant. He encouraged the growers to do their best in providing their traditional great quality fruit to the processing facilities and expressed his appreciation for being conservation minded and good stewards of the land. Director of Agriculture, Steve Smith, gave some keys to making this a successful fresh pack season, particularly focusing on the safety of transportation and workers. Industry suppliers were acknowledged for their support of the evening and valuable door prizes were distributed to the crowd from the sponsors. A rainy trip home was enjoyed by many growers, who were grateful for the showers, a great conclusion to a great day! COMPLIMENT I had always used Hunts tomatoes, then I got a Red Gold coupon that I could not resist. So I bought 3 cans, and to my surprise I liked them. So I have switched from Hunts to Red Gold. Thanks so much for these great tasting tomato products!!! No, it is not a new product line nor is it a movie remake. Each year before Fresh Pack, Brian and Selita open their home to a combined orientation/social gathering for new supervisors and managers, who have yet to experience a Fresh Pack season. The primary goal of Green Tomatoes is for our new recruits to hear first hand from the Red Gold leadership team, just what to expect during Pack and what Pack will be like. It is also an opportunity for the two groups to get to know one another on a first name basis. This opportunity to become personally acquainted with the CEO and the entire senior management team is another unique benefit of working in a family-owned and operated business; albeit another reason that makes Red Gold different in a very positive way from other employers. The late afternoon Green Tomatoes event begins with a social hour followed by team building exercises prepared by human resources, followed by a cookout and concluding with a group discussion about Pack. “I planned an ice breaker networking game where everyone’s name tag included a food ingredient,” said Heather Imel, Manager of Professional Staffing. “Then I passed out recipes and everyone had to network around the crowd to find the other ingredients necessary to complete their imaginary dish,” said Heather. “The food themed ice breaker was one of our better team building exercises,” said Tim Ingle, Director of Human Resources. The second team building exercise was much more challenging. Participants were divided into groups of four and they were handed a long rope. The goal each four-person team was to tie three, over-hand knots in the rope, all the while never removing one’s hand from the rope. “This sounds easier than it is,” said Heather. “Imagine Twister with a rope.” The team building exercises were all in good fun and enabled the group to meet one another. The afternoon 93 degree heat sort of had everyone “at the end of their rope,” but it was worth the wait. A cookout with brats, hotdogs, salads, cookies and plenty of cold soft drinks on the bank of the lake, awaited the hot and hungry crowd. After the cookout, everyone gathered in Brian and Selita’s living room for informal introductions and a detailed discussion about Pack. Each new employee introduced themselves and told a little bit about their background; where they were from, along with their hobbies and interests. The same was done by Red Gold’s senior management team. The focus of this discussion then moved to Pack. Brian, Selita, Tina Anderson, Maurie Fettig, Mike Crooks, Luke Logan, Chuck Williamson and Rick Jones all shared their experience and insights about what to expect when the tomatoes arrive and the factories are running at full capacity. Tina and Brian did a particularly good job about describing Red Gold’s unique “get it done” culture as well as our rich Red Gold history. Other participants making up the 33 attendees at this year’s Green Tomatoes event were, Tim Ingle, Pete Bons, Heather Imel, Colt Reichart, Beau Reichart, Nancy Hudson, Sara Hartman, Elizabeth Swadener, Mike Mills, Jack White, Dave Steighner, and Steve Austin. Please welcome Red Gold’s 2010 Green Tomato class which is, Namrata Dahiwade, Elwood Quality Assurance Supervisor Trainee, Tess Jones, Orestes Quality Assurance Supervisor Trainee, Jerry Hessell, Elwood Manufacturing Supervisor Trainee, Justin Dabbelt, Elwood Manufacturing Supervisor Trainee, Reston Rawlings, Orestes Manufacturing Supervisor Trainee, Garey Buck Corporate Finance Trainee, Ann Youngman, Corporate Product Marketing Manager, Dewey Angell, Corporate Marketing Manager and Consumer Insights, Ruben Lazaro, Orestes Assistant Human Resources Manager, Steve Doty, Orestes Sanitation Supervisor, Ashley Young, Corporate Food Scientist, Keith Daniels, Orestes Warehouse Supervisor, Vishwesh Kelkar, Corporate Research Scientist, and Megan Seeman, Elwood Human Resources Assistant. After Pack, this group will have unofficially graduated from being a Green Tomato to being a perfect bright red fancy ‘grade A’ Red Gold tomato. New Tuttorosso Trailers! Red Gold Marketing and RG Transport recently worked with our advertising agency, Clarity Coverdale Fury, to create a dramatic, new graphic design to reinforce the Italian heritage and positioning of our Tuttorosso Brand. The trailer design features the “man in the field” artwork from our Tuttorosso Pasta Sauce Label giving consumers the feeling of looking through a porthole onto a lush field of tomatoes. These new Tuttorosso graphics have been added to five new trailers which are delivering product to the East Coast retailers. As consumers approach the rear door, they will know it is a Tuttorosso trailer by the large green can of Tuttorosso Crushed Tomatoes surrounded by red, ripe, tomatoes. Keep on rollin’ CONGRATULATIONS Perfect Attendance 154 of our employees received perfect attendance recognition this year, with the Distribution Center having the highest percentage (30%) of employees with this honor! Green Belt Certification 76 employees started their journey toward Peak Performance Black Belt status by earning their first honor, Green Belt Certification! Employee of the Month Our 60 Employees of the Month received awards with their picture featured on a Red Gold label. The qualities that earn them their status were listed on the ingredient statement on the back panel. Service Awards 169 employees with five to thirty-five years of service received necklaces, key rings, glass tomato lights, bracelets, money clips, jewelry boxes, clocks and rings….one ring with diamonds! Safety Award The “Traveling Safety Award” is one of the most desirable awards. Covering OSHA recordables, lost time incidents, first aid, near misses and property damage, it goes to the safest department in the entire company. This year the award went to the Geneva Shipping Department. This is the fourth time this group has won the coveted award since 2003! I love your products, I use them instead of fresh tomatoes (I REALLY like the taste of canned ones over fresh – is that weird?) Anyways, I used the diced tomatoes in salsas and quesos and I always have such wonderful feedback! Thank you so much for a great product that I will continue to use for a very long time. Consumer, Ohio ARE YOU UP TO DATE? Immunization is one of the most significant public health achievements of the 20th century. In the United States, vaccines have eradicated smallpox, eliminated wild poliovirus, and significantly reduced the number of cases of Measles, Diphtheria, Rubella, Pertussis and other diseases. Getting immunized is a lifelong, life-protecting community effort regardless of age, sex, race, ethnic background or country of origin. As children and college students prepare to head back to school, it is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and those in the community to catch up on their vaccinations.
