Illumination. Pushing back the darkness, and seeing, as if for the first time, the hope, the beauty, the joy. Join us on May 1st as we experience this lush, peaceful, quiet meditation, and allow the music and the text to open us to the eternal, the numinous, the ineffable. A Grand Idea: Adopt-a-key! Should you wish to contribute, please see Selma Moore or Sue Stinson. Contributions may also be placed in the offertory plates or sent to the church office with a note attached. We are grateful for the fine response so far and will have an update soon. ~Your Worship Committee Music at Park Central pg. 4 ORGAN CRAWL 2016 Sunday, April 24 ~ 1:30 pm Education at Park Central pg. 5 Vacation Bible School June 27 to July 1 The theme for this year’s Vacation Bible School is Joy in Jesus: Everywhere! All the Time! One you’ve made room for Jesus, there’s no room that can contain or confine the joy – it can be found anywhere and everywhere, in all circumstances! Jesus’ joy is boundless, and there is great healing and freedom in this truth. Come join us for joy-filled week! There is room for your gifts and love. Please talk to Sarah McTyre if you are able to join this important summer ministry. This year’s fall retreat will be held on Saturday, October 8 at Christ the King Retreat Center in Syracuse. The outside grounds span six acres with 18 gardens and a pond. The peaceful, contemplative atmosphere will provide the perfect environment to recharge, renew and refocus as we spend the day together. Please mark your calendar and watch for more information soon! Joy and Justice: A Lenten Conversation on Race Many thanks to all who participated in the courageous Lenten conversations. During the last session, groups around the tables discussed ways that we might move from awareness to action as a faith community. The Christian Education Committee will compile these ideas and share them with the Session so that we might all consider how God may be calling us to deeper joy and stronger justice as we love our neighbors. Mission at Park Central pg. 6 Day On Saturday, April 30th 11am-3pm NIA Ministries will be hosting its annual event Queen’s Day at Park Central! This year we hope to serve at least 45-50 returning and new participants from various women’s shelters, women’s groups, churches and individuals active in their communities. This year we are featuring several guest speakers and activities to assist in making this year’s event a success. Since 2011, NIA Ministries and the women of the “EXPRESS” Yourself Support Program have planned, organized and hosted Queen’s Day event at Park Central. Planning the event gives them a sense of purpose and accomplishment. They participate in the preparation of the food, decorations, and the development of the activities and solicit various donations for the free raffle that allows every participant to leave with a gift. Several volunteers from Park Central have also participated in this event through various tasks needed to make the event a success. The purpose of the day will be to provide women a chance to network and to connect and build community, to provide women with an opportunity to develop and enhance self-esteem, self-awareness & self-image, and to provide resources, tools & techniques to cope with every day life’s challenges. Mission of the Church pg. 7 We again have the opportunity to prepare and serve a meal at the Samaritan Center on Saturday, April 23rd from 11:00 - 3:00. As usual your Mission Committee will be coordinating the feeding and providing the funds for the meal. We look to you, the congregation, to provide the person power to make this happen, as you have so many times before. Again we will need volunteers to order, pick up the food, prepare, serve and clean up after the meal. Please save the date on your calendar and invite your friends to come and join us in this mission. WHY THE POOR PAY MORE FOR TOILET PAPER? Since we began collecting personal care items on communion Sundays to share with our neighborhood food pantry, Joan Deppa spotted an article in the Washington Post which offers an enlightened perspective on the value of this ministry. Many of you are already aware of these dynamics, and others will be surprised about “Why the poor pay more for toilet paper….” It is worth the time to read.
