We are pleased to second announce you "14th International Fir Symposium” to be held by
Kastamonu University in Kastamonu, Turkey between 12 and 14 of September, 2012. This
international symposium is organized to share and discuss the recent developments and
data on Fir species. For Turkey, Firs have a special importance because of theirs increasing
economic value in marketplace and decorative characteristic in landscape architecture. The
aim of the conference is to provide a synoptic overview on latest observations in fir
ecosystem dynamics, recent threats and suitable management concepts.

SYMPOSIUM THEME:
Climate change and its impacts upon the Fir species of Europe and Mediterranean Region.
SYMPOSIUM OUTLINE:
Fir species grow naturally in a wide range of vegetation zones and site types of Europe,
Mediterranean and Black Sea Regions. Some of these species are prone to extinction, others
are intensively cultivated. Some species are of great economic importance, but all of them
are of high ecological importance for the ecosystems and plant communities they are part
of.
The aim of the conference is to provide a synoptic overview on latest research outputs in fir
ecosystem dynamics, recent threats and suitable management concepts. Presentations are
welcome for the following session topics:
SESSION TOPICS - CALL FOR PAPERS REGARDING:
1. The current status of fir species in Europe and the Mediterranean region
2. Ecology of fir species (incl. pathology)
3. Genetics of fir species (incl. provenance trials)
4. Silviculture of fir species (incl. multipurpose management concepts)
5. Economic value and marketing on fir species
6. Usage of fir species in non-wood (Landscape, ornamental plants etc.)
7. The importance of fir species on industrial use
TENTATIVE PROGRAMME OF THE SYMPOSIUM:
2 days for scientific presentations
1 day for field trips to the fir stands of “Ilgaz - mountains”
Pre-Conference excursion (optional) “Abies bornmuelleriana in the Bolu region”
Istanbul (weekend) and the fir forest of the Bolu and Karabük-Yenice region (3,5 days)

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE:
There will be a shuttle service from Atatürk Airport in Istanbul (September 8-11) to the
conference hotel in Kastamonu.
ACCOMODATION:
(1) Full package fee (single room): 350 Euro (Including accommodation in single rooms,
registration, welcome & farewell dinner, coffee breaks, breakfast, lunches and dinners,
abstracts book and symposium bag, airport shuttle (Istanbul / Kastamonu), field trip in
Kastamonu, social events, entrance to touristic places at Kastamonu etc.).
(2) Full package fee (2-4 people room): 300 Euro (Including accommodation in 2-4 people
rooms, registration, welcome & farewell dinner, coffee breaks, breakfast, lunches and
dinners, abstracts book and symposium bag, airport shuttle (Istanbul / Kastamonu), field trip
in Kastamonu, social events and entrance to touristic places at Kastamonu etc.).
(3) Only registration fee: 150 Euro (Including registration, welcome & farewell dinner, lunch,
coffee breaks, abstracts book and symposium bag).
(4) Accompany person fee: 200 Euro (Including accommodation in double room with
spouse, welcome & farewell dinner, breakfast, lunches and dinners, social events and
entrance to touristic places at Kastamonu etc.)
The 200 Euro is the fee of accompany person. The participant should pay 350 Euro.
The fees (1, 2, 4) covers accommodation at hotel from evening 11 September to breakfast
15 September, 2012.
Ilgaz Mountain Resort Hotel is the official partner for presentations and accommodation
during the IKA 2012. ( http://www.ilgazmountainresort.com/en/)
The Pre-Conference excursion (optional) “Abies nordmanniana subsp. bornmuelleriana in
the Bolu and Karabük-Yenice region” is not included by the Registration Fee. The fee of
optional trip will be announced later.
An official "Letter of Invitation" to obtain a Visa and/or authorization to attend the
symposium will be issued after the Registration Form has been received for those who need
it. The Turkish visa policy changes according to countries.
VENUE:
The conference will be held in Kastamonu-Turkey. The city is located in Western Blacksea
Region of Turkiye. The population of the urban center Kastamonu is approximately 104 000
in 2012. The city is believed to have been founded in the 18th century BC. The town was
known as Timonion during the Roman period. Within the region, Romans founded a city of
Paphlagonia at the town Tasköprü which is nowadays famous for its garlic production. The
Dress Code Revolution started at Kastamonu by Atatürk on August 23, 1925. Atatürk made
his historical speech concerning about the "Hat and Dress Revolution" in 1925 at his visit to
Kastamonu. Near the city (approximately 10 miles) is the village of Kasaba with an important
mosque, the Mahmut Bey mosque, from 1366, built in the Seljuk tradition. It is considered to
be one of the finest wooden mosques in Turkiye. The door has excellent woodcarving.
Kastamonu has a warm-summer humid continental climate with cold winters and warm
summers. The average annual precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, with
spring being the wettest season.The climate is usually warm during September. The average
temperature is 15 oC in September. The average high is 23.8 oC, the average low is 9.1 oC, the
precipitation is 32.3 mm, the humidity is 61%, the average rainy days is 6.8 in this month.
