Avocent® Universal Management Gateway Appliance –
Setting up a Serial Target
Problem
The following supplemental information to the user guide may be helpful when connecting a serial target to the
Avocent® Universal Management Gateway appliance firmware version 2.4.0.4 or 2.5.0.8.
NOTE: The Avocent® Universal Management Gateway appliance is sometimes referred to as the appliance in this
Tech Note.
Solution
Any auto-sense port can be used to connect the appliance to serial console targets. The auto-sense ports support
either the Avocent or Cisco soft pin-out modes.

For the Avocent® Universal Management Gateway 4000 and 6000 appliance, the port LEDs are always on
and a turquoise (blue-green) line near the port number indicates the location of the auto-sense ports.

For the Avocent® Universal Management Gateway 2000 appliance, the auto-sense ports connect to
serial, serial rack PDUs or service processors.

The Avocent® Universal Management Gateway 2000 appliance does not support the UMIQ KVM module,
and the RJ45 ports with a number and without the turquoise line, are not auto-sense ports and can only
connect to service processors.

Setting up a Serial Target
To set up a serial target:
Straight UTP cables connect to RJ45 serial ports on Cisco or Sun targets. The appliance sees the serial target and
automatically assigns the Cisco soft pin-out mode to the connected port.

Straight UTP cables connect to a Cyclades ADB0036 adaptor to connect to servers with DB9 COM ports.



When connecting to the ADB0036, the Avocent soft pin-out is automatically selected.
When connecting an appliance auto-sense port to an Avocent ACS setup port, use a straight cable and the
Cisco soft pin-out.
When connecting an appliance auto-sense port to an MPU or DSR xx35, use a reversing/roll-over cable,
Cisco soft pin-out and a 210105 (540-729-501) adaptor.
Auto Sensing Ports
Auto sense is enabled by default on the serial port of the target.
