Update Files Without Changing the URL
If you have a document or PDF file that frequently needs updating, overwriting your file is an easier
way to manage it versus deleting it and uploading a new one. Overwriting files eliminates the need to
update your link address (URL) or the system name.
Instructions:
1. On your computer, save your new file with the current version number or date
(i.e. “Office-Hours_Fall14.pdf”).
2. In Cascade, click on the file you wish to replace (i.e. “Office-Hours.pdf”) and select “Edit” from the Tab
Menu. This file should contain a simple name without the version number or date.
3. Once you are on the edit screen, “Drop file here to upload or Choose File” and select “Choose File.”
(Note: On some browsers, it may say “Browse for File.”)
Essentially, you are uploading the new file over the
existing one, effectively replacing it without changing
the system name/URL.
4. Browse your computer for the most recent version of the file and click “Open.”
When the file is received in Cascade, it will look like this:
5. Click “Submit” to save.
6. Choose “Publish” from the Tab Menu. Make sure each
destination you’d like to publish is checked, then select
“Submit.” Publishing will ensure that your file is updated on the live site.
Tips:
1. Do not use spaces or non-traditional characters in file names, as they do not
translate well to URLs. Best practice is to use a hyphen to separate words (i.e.
“Office-Hours.pdf”)
2. Display Name = Name of Page (i.e. “About Us”)
Title = Display Name - NIU - [Name of Site]
(i.e. “About Us - NIU - Department of Web Communications”)
