Creating equations in Blackboard®
There are many instances in which you wish to convey an equation in a discussion board entry or
in the virtual classroom. Blackboard provides an equation editor to help you do this.

You can add equations using the WebEQ

If you do not see this icon, you may have to click on to view the fuller menu.
Once in the equation editor, you provide an equation name in the box provided and specify the
font size, width adjustment, and height adjustment.ii In the space below the menu, you type in
the equation by selecting an icon and then selecting an item within the Java Applet Window
drop-down menu. For example, if you want to write a ratio, you would select

and then type in the numerator and the denominator into the boxes, using mouse clicks to
identify where you wish to insert values or symbols. When you have completed the equation,
click on Add .
Once you have completed one equation, you can reuse equations in the same message by
specifying the equation name and either Add or Modify the equation. You would use “Add” if
you wanted to repeat the equation as is, whereas you would use “Modify” if you want to use the
equation again, but with some changes.

Typically, you want to leave the width and height adjustments at the default setting of 100%.
