About St Mungo’s

St Mungo’s runs over 200 projects across London and the South, providing supportive housing for
around 2,000residents each night. We support people with housing, health and skills and work
opportunities, helping people to rebuild a life away from homelessness.
Established in 1969, St Mungo’s has pioneered different kinds of specialist accommodation projects
for those who are homeless and in need. In 2014 St Mungo’s merged with Broadway, harnessing
the expertise of both charities. St Mungo’s Broadway offers, for example, supported housing for
older people and women only services including the Muslim Women’s Service in south London,
also run in partnership with the National Zakat Foundation. This women’s service adds another

The Date Palm Project
Aims
• To support young Muslim men
leaving HMP Feltham who are at risk
of homelessness. The immediate aim
is to ensure men can move into the
project on the day of release.
• The service offers housing related
support to young male prison
leavers, which is tailored to their
individual needs. Ideally, men will
stay from four to six months but
those with higher or ongoing needs
can sometimes stay longer to allow
time to find appropriate move on
accommodation.
• The service works to prepare the
men for more independent living
when they leave the project and
supports them to be self determining
and to do things for themselves.
• Support workers work with the men
to identify the areas in which support
is needed. Support and move on
plans are then agreed, which address
each identified support area, including
spiritual needs as appropriate.

• Clients are supported to achieve their
personal aspirations and the skills
needed to become as independent
as possible within the community.
When appropriate, individuals are
referred to specialist agencies for
additional support.

About the service
• The Date Palm Project is based in a
property in North West London and
consists of:
– An eight bed house in which
two rooms have en-suite facilities
and the remaining have shared
bathrooms
– A shared kitchen / lounge area
and access to the landscaped
garden at the back of the house
– A staff office for up to three staff
– A prayer room.
• The service aims to help the men
with more than accommodation,
for example, support with
counselling, benefits advice, language
classes or other skills training as well
as help with moving on to more
permanent housing.
Who is the service for?
• Support workers in the project work
37.5 hours per week, helping the
clients on a one to one basis and
also running group activities. Staff
also regularly visit HMP Feltham to
liaise with prison services and with
potential clients to assess suitability
and build relationships.
Whilst staff are unable to undertake any
personal care tasks themselves, they
are able to offer advice and information
to clients and assist them to access
homecare services if required for
personal care.
The service targets young male Muslim
prison leavers with medium support
needs. The person must be at risk of
homelessness and willing to accept
support from workers.
• St Mungo’s provides Area Manager
and general management support
weekly to the scheme and a 24
hour on call system to provide extra
support for staff, should they require
it, out of hours.
