Units of Measure and Measurement Notation The language of science depends on the proper use of units of measure and measurement notation. The following tables list the names and symbols for many of the common units. Most units used in high school science courses come from or are derived from Le Système International d'Unités (SI). Many aspects of SI overlap with the metric system. More common in this country for general use (but not in science classes) is the English system, which includes such measures as the inch, foot, mile, BTU, ounce, quart, gallon, pound, ton, psi, and the Fahrenheit temperature scale. Also included in this section is a listing of the Greek alphabet. Greek letters are commonly used in scientific notation.
