Design Checker/Spec Writer THE POSITION The Design Checker/Spec Writer will be responsible for developing, editing and maintaining architectural and engineering specifications for wood and steel framed, multi-story modular construction. The design checking portion of this role encompasses the application, development and continuous improvement of design quality checks, during both proposal and post award stages. The successful candidate will work with team members to design and deliver world-class building solutions by leveraging your talents to help solve unconventional challenges in practical ways. This position is Safety Sensitive and will require Drug and Alcohol testing as a condition of employment. RESPONSIBILITIES Review product and process non-conformance and recommend follow through on corrective actions; Checking design deliverables for confirmation to Building Codes, RFP requirements and Continuous Improvement Standards; Responsible for seeing that the Quality Assurance Program is fully utilized; Support, implement and assist with improvements on the design and engineering quality plan; Preparation of technical reports, specifications and calculations; Helping in the maintenance and development of Master Specification Library, including industry standards, rules, regulations and codes; Provide technical assistance on new proposals and contracts which may include, instruction for procurement, code compliancy, informational documents, legal and front end documents; Create and check design information with consideration for accuracy, completeness and adherence to client specifications; ensuring compliance with applicable federal, provincial and local regulations/standards; Review and understand contract summaries of work with the ability to offer input into the creation of actionable design schedules; Collaborate with external engineering partners and other personnel to resolve design challenges; Work with project teams and Project Managers to proactively support internal and external customers (Estimating, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Transport and Site Works/Field Services ) to ensure successful project execution; and Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein. THE INDIVIDUAL Required Education and Experience: Successful completion a diploma/ degree/ certificate or equivalent from an accredited university or college in Engineering, or Trades and Technology is an asset; 5+ years of experience with wood-frame building technology relating to commercial/industrial/hospitality sectors; Familiar with the use of Provincial Code Books and Industry Quality Control Standards; 1 Experience with modular/factory-built construction would be considered an asset; and 1 + years of AutoCAD experience would be considered an asset. Required Skills and Abilities: Knowledgeable in creating building specifications and the ability to read construction drawings; Exceptional time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously; Thorough understanding with regards to contracts, contract language, bid documents and bid development; Able to work individually and as a team member; Willing to take direction from senior team members, as well as mentor others in the Design team in your area of expertise; Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; Results oriented and excellent interpersonal skills; Driven to learn and develop new skills; Ability to work in a fast paced deadline driven environment; AutoCAD or other CAD software experience required; working knowledge of AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD MEP would be considered an asset; CSI specification format experience would be considered an asset; Basic understanding of multi-discipline practices required to execute small and large projects including architectural, structural, civil, survey, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing; and High-level experience with MS Office and familiarity with specification software programs an asset.
