General Information
Introduction
3M™ Scotchkote™ PNC1011 Field Joint Coatings offer significant
improvement in field joint coating technology. Pipeline and field
joint coatings are the primary means of assuring the long-term
operations by preventing pipeline deterioration and service
disruption due to corrosion loss. Protective Network Coatings (PNC),
help provide better adhesion and better impact resistance at wider
operating temperatures (-50°C to 135°C).
Description
Scotchkote PNC1011 field joint coating is manufactured by
3M. Scotchkote PNC1011 is a novel one-part, heat-curable,
thermosetting polypropylene/epoxy hybrid film. It is designed to
help provide superior corrosion protection as a field joint coating for
3-layer polypropylene pipelines. Scotchkote PNC1011 has excellent
adhesion to fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) and polypropylene; as a
result, there is no need for an adhesive to bond to the FBE. This
breakthrough in technology removes a weak link in the coating
system to create a more robust and reliable coating.
Availability
Scotchkote PNC1011 is available through 3M Customer Service –
800-722-6721.
History
Scotchkote PNC1011 was launched in May 2010. Scotchkote
PNC1011 has been tested to ISO 21809-3, NFA 49-711 and DIN
30678 standards.
Application Advantage
Scotchkote PNC1011 can be applied to gelled or fully-cured FBE.
Scotchkote PNC1011 is applied to the field joint using specially
designed, automated equipment, eliminating the need for ‘artful’
application and the dependence on the experience and skill of the
operator.
Shipping and Storage Advantages
Scotchkote PNC1011 field joint coating is shipped in 300 ft. rolls,
weighing approximately 95 lbs. The coating can be stored for a
minimum of two years under most climactic conditions without
deterioration of the coating.
Installation Advantages
Scotchkote PNC1011 has the flexibility to perform in “S” lay and
“J” lay modes and also to be reeled onto the spool of a reel ship.
Scotchkote PNC1011 is applied to the field joint using specially
designed, automated equipment, eliminating the need for ‘artful’
application and the dependence on the experience and skill of the
operator. Scotchkote PNC1011 application cycle time meets or
exceeds the requirements of the installation barges.
In-Service Advantages
Scotchkote PNC1011 is designed to help provide maximum
corrosion protection under widely varying pipeline operating
conditions and temperatures.
Cost Comparison
The total applied cost of the Scotchkote PNC1011 is competitive
with other comparable solutions used today for 3LPP field joint
systems. Total applied cost includes; materials, equipment and
crew.
Conclusion
Scotchkote PNC1011 field joint coating is a film solution which is
novel to the oil and gas industry. Scotchkote PNC1011 replaces the
current 3-layer solutions with a two-layer solution that eliminates
the need for the adhesive layer. Scotchkote PNC1011 contains a
hybrid polypropylene-epoxy system that significantly improves the
polypropylene adhesion to the degree that there is no need for an
additional adhesive to bond to the FBE. This innovation eliminates
a step in the application process, making the process faster and
eliminating chances for failure at the adhesive layer.

Section 2
Coating Material
Description
3M™ Scotchkote™ PNC1011 Field Joint Coating consists of a
blend of polyolefin and epoxy resin. Careful raw material selection
was made by 3M to assure the coating will withstand most
environmental conditions encountered by underwater pipelines.
Scotchkote PNC1011 coating is available in three different widths;
16 inch, 18 inch and 28 inch, to meet the needs of the industry.
3M maintains a laboratory group dedicated to the research
and development of Protective Network Coating (PNC) coating
technology. The PNC technology has been in development for
more than a decade. This development has been driven by staff
laboratories with broad-based expertise in the scientific disciplines
applicable to coating and surface technology.
Manufacturing
The dual-layer Scotchkote™ PNC1011 Film is comprised of two
components – an adhesive layer and a topcoat – which are
compounded separately, then coextruded on a state-of-theart extrusion line designed to help ensure complete cohesion
between the two layers of material. Our extrusion process also
helps ensure a uniform thickness and defect free surface across
the width of the film.
Process and Quality Control
Process control is essential to the quality of the finished product.
3M maintains rigid incoming quality inspection of raw materials,
precise measurement and metering of critical components,
controlled environmental conditions and processing temperatures
for the chemical constituents, and a discerning outgoing inspection
of the finished coating to assure uniformity of product application
and performance.
Packaging, Storage and Shipping
All Scotchkote™ PNC Films are packed, shipped and to be stored in
roll form. The roll is wound around a cardboard core and put into a
heavy-duty polyethylene bag to prevent any moisture from damaging
the core and keep the film dry and ready for use. The roll is then
fitted with plywood end boards held in with core plugs, and put into
a cardboard box. This prevents any major damage to the roll during
shipping and keeps the roll from becoming oblong or telescoping
when handled. The rolls come individually or 12 to a pallet, with 16”
wide roll of film weighing roughly 90 lbs (33.5 kg) each and a 28”
wide roll of film weighing roughly 150 lbs (67 kg) each.
