The Bachelor of Business Administration in Management programme,
developed by the Department of Management, aims to equip students with the
abilities and tools to successfully manage the people within an organisation as
well as the organisation itself, in both local and international environments.
Students of this programme will acquire the knowledge to meet management
challenges including decision making, leading and motivating people, leading
organisational change and strategising and managing internationally.
The core courses of the Management major provide an overview of the core
knowledge and skills required to efficiently and effectively manage and lead
people and organisations. Building on the core courses platform, it offers a
choice of two distinctive streams: Human Resources Management (HRM) and
Strategy and International Management (SIM).
HRM stream
The HRM stream is designed for students who wish to pursue a career as inhouse specialists or outside consultants in the human resource management
area.
Based on a firm theoretical foundation in HRM and an appreciation of other
business disciplines, this stream provides students with the necessary skills,
knowledge and social awareness to manage people in Hong Kong, the
Chinese mainland and other parts of the world.
Specifically, the goals of the HRM stream are to:
1. provide students with knowledge of the central functions of business
management in general and human resource management in particular;
2. offer students opportunities to acquire generic skills such as
interpersonal interaction, effective communication, working individually
and in teams, creativity, emotional intelligence, business etiquette, etc.;
and

3. enable students to apply intellectual strategic thinking skills in human
resource management and demonstrate sensitivity to intercultural and
global issues.
SIM stream
The SIM stream is developed for students who aspire to embrace a
management career specialising in strategy and international management
areas.
The business environment in Asia and the international marketplace have
become increasingly dynamic. To thrive in such a context, students of today, or
managers of the future, need to be equipped with a sound understanding of the
international business environment and the ability to recognise and analyse
strategic issues within the environment.
The specific objectives of the SIM stream are to:
1. equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop strategies and
effectively manage in the international business environment;
2. help students to develop the capabilities needed to navigate and
succeed in the challenging international marketplace, especially in the
increasingly important Asia Pacific region; and
3. allow students to understand how firms operate in the international
environment and gain an in-depth understanding of the development and
implementation of strategy and managerial activities in relation to crossborder business activities.

The School of Creative Media, the region’s first such institution, was founded to
nurture a new generation of interdisciplinary artists and creative media
professionals. Our students are trained across disciplines spanning computer
science, media arts, visual design, creative writing, cultural studies and digital
technology. We bridge the boundaries between art and science and integrate
traditional and new media. We value applied creativity, cultural awareness and
critical thinking as much as business sense and entrepreneurial success.
With strengths arising from a unique mix of East and West, Hong Kong has seen
a major expansion in its creative economy and has emerged as a thriving hub
of new media culture in Asia and the world. CityU’s School of Creative Media
has played an instrumental role in this development as the leading force in
creative media education and research in Hong Kong.
The School of Creative Media currently offers the following three majors:
BA Creative Media
BSc Creative Media
BAS New Media
Students start with a common year of foundation study. The core courses
introduce all students from the School of Creative Media to the full trajectory of
technical and conceptual coursework available in the majors, and emphasise
the trans-disciplinary nature of study in the School. Students declare their
majors after completing the foundation courses in the first year.

The School of Energy and Environment aims to perform cutting-edge research
and provide professional education on globally hot issues related to energy
and the environment. The development of technologies that can generate clean
and sustainable energy, as well as studies of the impact on the environment
and global climate change from energy use and production, must therefore be
at the forefront of energy and environmental research.
To mitigate climate change resulting from the overuse of fossil fuels, the
government, industry and business sectors have been gearing up to use
technologies focused on energy efficiency and conservation. This is where the
School of Energy and Environment, as an educator, steps in to provide the
required training.
The School of Energy and Environment currently offers the following majors:
BEng Energy Science and Engineering
BEng Environmental Science and Engineering
Students start with a common year of foundation study. The content of our
programmes covers a wide spectrum of areas, allowing students to explore
knowledge in a number of environments. At the beginning of their studies, they
develop a broad scientific foundation by studying courses in basic science,
covering mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry and biology
before they are guided through an in-depth exploration of environment and
energy issues. Students declare their majors after completing the foundation
courses in the first year.

The Associate of Science in Architectural Studies programme, offered by the
Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, provides a sound education
and training for students to become technically competent personnel in the
architectural profession.
The programme seeks to prepare students for a role that is complementary to
that of the architect in the preparation of design and production information for
building projects, and provides a broad-based academic foundation for further
academic and career development. Graduates may apply to enter full-time
architectural studies degree programmes offered by CityU and other local
institutions, or pursue further study with credit transfer in overseas universities.

The Department of Applied Social Sciences prides itself on its long track
record in offering high-quality education delivered by a multi-disciplinary team
of faculty members. “Applied Social Sciences” is the term used to describe the
application of social science models and theories to the understanding and
analysis of social issues and to the solution of individual and community
problems. It includes the study of counselling, criminology, psychology, social
work and sociology.
The Department of Applied Social Sciences currently offers the following
majors:
BSocSc Criminology and Sociology
BSocSc Psychology
BSocSc Social Work
"Criminology and Sociology" provides students with a broad knowledge of
criminology and sociological practice, and professional competence in
conducting sociological research to solve problems in organisational,
community, societal, national and international contexts. This major is suitable
for students with a particular interest in protecting the public and maintaining
Hong Kong’s status as one of the safest cities in the world. "Psychology"
focuses on the study of human behaviour from the perspective of individuals
and groups. "Social Work" is a helping profession that bridges all disciplines
and uses that knowledge to develop theories and practices to solve problems
at the level of the individual, the group and the community.

Founded in 2014 with a view to establishing excellent tertiary education, worldclass research and an international reputation in Hong Kong, the Department of
Chinese and History currently offers the major in Chinese and History with three
streams - Chinese, Cultural Heritage and History. It aims to equip students with
advanced and professional knowledge and a wide range of analytical and
writing skills.
The Chinese stream strives to provide students with solid and comprehensive
training in Chinese language and literature, and a good knowledge of the
evolution and appreciation of the Chinese language and literature from its past
to its present.
The Cultural Heritage stream provides the professional training necessary to
nurture the high-calibre cultural professionals required to meet the growing
manpower needs resulting from Hong Kong’s rapidly expanding management
capacity in culture- and heritage-related industries, including cultural tourism,
museum management, exhibition industries, commercial galleries, libraries and
archives, community heritage programmes, publishing, entertainment and artsrelated professions, cultural and creative industries.
The History stream examines the cause-and-effect relationships in human
affairs and addresses the complexity of the past in shaping contemporary
society. Although Chinese history is the primary focus of this stream, students
may also choose to take courses related to world history and public history that
provide comprehensive and in-depth historical knowledge.
Students who choose to major in Chinese and History will enjoy the significant
advantages of integrating the three streams and our interdisciplinary emphasis,
and may go on to pursue a wide range of careers after graduation.

The Department of English at City University of Hong Kong is an international
leader in research on and teaching of English Studies in Asia. The Department
is established as one of the most creative and dynamic English departments in
the Asia-Pacific region. Equally important, the Department is committed to
providing an innovative undergraduate programme that prepares students for
their professional careers in management and administration; editing and
publishing; teaching; public relations and advertising; and entertainment and the
arts.
The Department currently offers the following major:
BA English Studies
The major offers a unique approach to the study of English as used in
professional and intercultural contexts. The major trains students to be practical,
innovative and creative users of the English language in multilingual and
multicultural workplaces. The major combines a strong foundation in English
and communication with a practical orientation towards English use in the
corporate world and the creative professions.
To achieve academic excellence and to promote whole person development,
the major adopts a global perspective that emphasises the importance of
intercultural knowledge and understanding. All students are encouraged to
participate in overseas learning experiences (e.g. English immersion, student
exchange, study tour or overseas internship) to improve their awareness of
intercultural communication and enhance their English communication skills. In
addition, the internship (Professional Internship or Creative Internship) and the
final-year professional communication projects provide students with hands-on
workplace experience of using English and communication skills in real-world
corporate and creative settings.

Housed in the landmark Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, the Department
of Media and Communication offers innovative academic programmes that
emphasise media convergence. Unlike traditional curricula that segregate
different modes of mass communication, we aim to train professional
communicators capable of working in an environment of media convergence
and information integration – an environment that spans journalism,
broadcasting and TV, advertising, public relations and new media. To that end,
we emphasise the integral infusion of new technologies, media skills,
communication theories and creativity in our education.
The Department’s teaching and research activities are supported by a state-ofthe-art integrated and inter-compatible digital multimedia platform. The facilities
include digital TV shooting/editing studios, 3-D Virtual TV/audio
recording/advertising shooting/design studios, new media and eye-tracking
labs.
During their undergraduate studies, students have many opportunities to travel
abroad on study trips, student exchanges and overseas internships. Graduates
also have a successful record of rapid employment after graduation, entering a
wide range of professions and career paths including, media industries,
telecommunications, advertising, business and education.
The Department currently offers the following two majors:

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering is one of the founding
departments of City University of Hong Kong. The Department offers
professional education at both undergraduate and postgraduate degree levels.
Our programmes are academically rigorous and professionally focused.
Adopting an inter-disciplinary approach, our programmes are delivered by a
professional team that includes civil and structural engineers, architectural
building services engineers, construction engineers, material technologists,
environmental scientists, architects, urban planners, building surveyors and
quantity surveyors. Our graduates are therefore uniquely placed to serve the
architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.
The AEC industry in Hong Kong is flourishing. Infrastructure and building
developments, and the maintenance and refurbishment of existing facilities,
have contributed to Hong Kong's growing economy. There are notable
opportunities for innovations and career development. In addition to the Hong
Kong market, the local AEC industry can expect to participate actively in the
markets of the People’s Republic of China. The Department has established
close collaborations with universities and professional bodies both locally and
in mainland China.
The introduction of four-year university education offers a platform for the
implementation of a Discovery-enriched Curriculum. Directed towards an
outcome-based teaching and learning paradigm, together with excellence in
applied research, the Department pledges to succeed in its mission of
“Meeting the world’s challenges – Build tomorrow, create the future”.
The Department currently offers the following majors:

The Department of Computer Science was established in 1984, and has
evolved from a teaching-oriented department into one that excels in both
teaching and research. The Department launched its first BSc in Computer
Studies in 1987 (renamed and restructured as the BSc in Computer Science in
2000), followed by the MSc in Computer Science in 1991. The Department
produced its first PhD graduate in 1994. In addition to offering traditional
courses such as the foundations of computer science, computer architecture
and software engineering, our curriculum exposes students to the latest
advances in cloud computing, data science, machine learning and
bioinformatics. Students have the opportunity to undertake a major design and
development project in an area such as data science, virtual reality,

The world today is interconnected via a myriad of communication channels that
may be either wired or wireless and with ever increasing amounts of data.
Whether you are walking the streets or travelling by bus, nearly everyone can
be seen checking emails, viewing the latest news, interconnecting socially or
playing games. Everyone expects connectivity at any place and any time, but
very few recognise the technology or the complexity involved in both the
hardware and the software. The Department of Electronic Engineering offers
majors that allow these technologies to function seamlessly across continents
whether for work or for play. We offer three majors that have sufficient depth to
prepare students to succeed in their technology driven career path and
beyond, yet are broad enough to allow them to pursue other career paths. Most
of the required courses in the first and second year are common to all three
majors, covering mathematics, computing, circuits, information technology and
computer programming. These courses set a solid foundation to prepare
students for their third and final year.
The Department currently offers the following three majors:
BEng Computer and Data Engineering
BEng Electronic and Communication Engineering
BEng Information Engineering
Strong links with industry have made our majors more applicable to Hong Kong,
with educational centres set up in collaboration with various multinational
companies. We have also set up the CityU Apps Lab, showcasing many
innovative and creative ideas from both students and staff.

The Department of Mathematics specialises in applied and computational
mathematics. Undergraduate teaching is backed up by extensive research on a
wide range of topics. This places us in close contact with many modern uses of
mathematics. Our major is both relevant and up to date.
The Department currently offers the following major:
BSc Computing Mathematics
The major was introduced in 1994. It emphasises the balance between theories
and their applications to practical problems, with a special focus on applied
mathematics linked to computational aspects. It aims to equip students and
produce graduates with a strong background in data analysis, mathematical
modelling, scientific computing and technical computer software.
Students are trained to think quantitatively and analyse problems critically. Our
graduates make contributions to the commercial, financial and industrial sectors
in Hong Kong and throughout Greater China.
Graduates find themselves in high demand in fields such as communications,
e-commerce, engineering analysis, mathematical modelling, quantitative
business planning and scientific programming. There is also a demand for
mathematics teachers in Hong Kong secondary schools. In recent years, about
10% of our graduates have found jobs in the business intelligence units of
major banks in Hong Kong.

In the new millennium, the fields of science and technology are
facing challenges in the areas of information technology, biotechnology,
nanotechnology, energy and environmental science. Materials issues are
ubiquitous in all of these areas and an understanding of the fundamental
principles of physics is essential. Recognising the importance of these
challenges and the need for synergism between education and research
encompassing both physics and materials, in 1993 CityU formed the
Department of Physics and Materials Science – the first of its kind in Hong
Kong.
Over the years, the Department has grown to its current siz e of 30 academic
staff with approximately 70 research students and 110 research and technical
staff. It now offers two undergraduate majors, Applied Physics and Materials
Engineering, with approximately 300 full-time students. The Department also
offers a taught Master of Science (MSc) degree in Materials Engineering and
Nanotechnology with a total of about 60 students, and post-graduate Master of
Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. The
Department has three objectives: to educate students with advanced
knowledge and skills, to conduct cutting-edge research and development
leading to the advancement of science and technology and to render
professional services for Hong Kong and the Greater China region.
The Department currently offers the following majors:
BSc Applied Physics
BEng Materials Engineering
The Applied Physics major is not an ordinary Physics major. In Applied
Physics, students are taught biomedical physics, nuclear radiation, materials
physics and optoelectronics, enabling them to seek employment in hospitals,
nuclear radiation facilities and engineering companies.
In the Materials Engineering major, students acquire knowledge that can be
used to solve materials problems in engineering processes. Graduates of this
major can seek jobs in engineering companies and join the Hong Kong
Institution of Engineers as graduate members. They can become professional
engineers after completing relevant on-the-job training.

The Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering aims to provide
world-class education and to conduct research in emerging fields of
engineering, which require an interdisciplinary approach and cover subject
areas that will meet Hong Kong’s current and future needs. The Department was
established in 2011, following the reorganisation of the former Department of
Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management.
The Department currently offers the following majors:
BEng Bioengineering, BEng Mechanical Engineering (JUPAS code:
JS1207)
BEng Nuclear and Risk Engineering (JUPAS code: JS1692)
We aim to equip our students with multi-disciplinary knowledge in nuclear and
risk engineering. In addition to providing discipline-related technical knowledge,
we help our students to develop problem-solving skills so that they can analyse
and solve a broad spectrum of engineering issues. Students gain a sound
foundation in the relevant disciplines through practical hands-on projects and
extensive exposure to real-world scenarios via industrial placements and
overseas exchange arrangements, with a view to attaining the dynamic levels
and standards required by highly competitive markets such as Hong Kong and
the Chinese mainland. Graduates are able to contribute their specialist skills,
competencies and multi-disciplinary knowledge to a wealth of related industrial
sectors such as nuclear engineering, power generation, materials engineering,
radiation protection, radiation dosimetry, medical equipment, risk engineering,
safety engineering, insurance and disaster management.
