2016 Fall semester ◆ Advanced Seminar Registration Guideline (2016.7.28 updated) The Advanced Seminar registration is very important to you. To avoid mistakes with your registration, please pay close attention to the following guidelines when you register for courses. Every semester, there are students who try to register for courses after the designated registration period. We do NOT permit students to register courses after the registration period no matter the reason (Also note that the instructors have no authority over course registration. Getting permission from the instructor will not suffice) Please make sure to register well before the deadline and if any problems arise, make sure to consult the SILS office BEFORE the registration period is over. Course list and information on each seminar course http://www.waseda.jp/fire/sils/en/students/registration/ *We will recruit about 15 students per class that we are offering (Even if many students apply for a class, there may be less than 15 students in a class after the screening process). *The webpage is frequently updated. Please make sure to click the refresh button in order to see the newest information. 1.Target Students In principle, students who wish to register for Advanced Seminar must enroll in an advanced seminar for 3 consecutive semesters. Students eligible for registering Advanced Seminar in Fall 2016 are those who fulfill the following requirements. 1) April enrollees who are in their 6th semester or later as of Fall 2016. 2) September enrollees who are in their 5th semester or later as of Fall 2016. *Student Guide Book says that September enrollees in or after 2013 can register for the Advanced Seminar course in their 6th semester. However, upon request, students can register for it in their 5th semester. Those who meet the following conditions must come to the SILS office and apply for exemption. 1) Students who wish to take Advanced Seminar for only 2 semesters since they cannot attend for 3 semesters due to inevitable reasons such as study abroad or early graduation and are scheduled to graduate within 8 semesters (*1) 2) Students who entered in 2009 or later (*2) and do not wish to take an Advanced Seminar or could not pass the screening by the deadline (*3) *1: If you are allowed to take only 2 semesters of Advanced Seminar, you must fulfill the exempted credits taking Intermediate or/and Advanced Courses. *2: Students who entered in 2008 or earlier are required to register for Advanced Seminar and Directed Studies for Senior Thesis. It may affect your timing of graduation. *3: Advanced Seminar and Directed Studies for Senior Thesis are not compulsory for students who entered in 2009 or later. If you are exempted, you must replace these credits by taking Intermediate or/and Advanced Courses. Those who wish to be exempted must apply at the SILS office by October 5 (Wed.). 2. Automatic Course Registration Students who registered for an Advanced Seminar in Spring 2016 and have not fulfilled all the requirements for Advanced Seminar yet will be automatically registered for the same seminar in Fall 2016 as well. These students do not need to take any additional procedures. If you are in the final semester in terms of Advanced Seminar, your Directed Studies for Senior Thesis (4 credits) will also be registered automatically. Therefore, when you register for courses, please subtract 6 credits (Advanced Seminar (2 credits) and Directed Studies for Senior Thesis (4 credits)) from the maximum registrable credits. If you are September enrollees and started Advanced Seminar from 5 th semester, Directed Studies for Senior Thesis will be registered in 8th semester not 7th semester. *Directed Studies for Senior Thesis here means your Graduation Thesis. 3.Class Selection The online syllabus system regarding Advanced Seminar will be available from July 23. It is important to read syllabi carefully before registration. Some Advanced Seminar classes will not accept any new students in this semester even if there is information (For current registered students) on the syllabus system. Regarding the seminars which will recruit new students, refer to the Course list and information on each seminar course (http://www.waseda.jp/fire/sils/en/students/registration/ ). If your Advanced Seminar class overlaps with other courses, Advanced Seminar will be registered on a priority basis (other courses will be automatically cancelled), so please be careful. 4. Changing Your Class Students who plan to take Advanced Seminar for 3 semesters are allowed to change their seminar once before the 2nd semester of their Advanced Seminar (This applies to those who failed their 1st semester of Advanced Seminar as well. Please refer to “10. If you fail your 1st semester of Advanced Seminar” for detail). If you wish to change your Advanced Seminar class, you need to apply for a changing request through MyWaseda in advance and take the regular application procedure and must pass the screening for your new class. It is not an easy procedure, so please consider seriously when you change your Advanced Seminar. For changing the seminar, we strongly recommend you to consult with the professor who you want to take beforehand. If you want to continue to take the same seminar class which you registered in Spring 2016, there is no extra procedures you need to take; the same class will be registered automatically. Apply for changing class Period Method Aug. 1 (Mon.) 9:00 - Aug. 22 (Mon.) 17:00 【strict observance】 Through MyWaseda → Form and Questionnaires Application 5. Withdrawal Your Class Students may elect not to continue with their Advanced Seminar program after one semester, regardless of the grade received. A passing grade in the Advanced Seminar will be treated as an advanced course credit. The remaining credit shortfall will be made up through taking intermediate or/and advanced courses. If you choose not to continue your Advanced Seminar class, you need to apply for a withdrawal request to SILS office. Apply for a withdrawal request Period Method Aug. 1 (Mon.) 9:00 - Aug. 22 (Mon.) 17:00 【strict observance】 Apply after coming to SILS office 6.The Screening Method Applicants will be screened by the instructor (Even if the number of applicants do not exceed the enrollment limit, students will also be screened by the instructor). Therefore, it is possible that you will not be chosen for the seminar course you want to take. The selection by instructors will be made mainly by paper screening or paper screening plus interview. Please confirm the screening method in advance since it differs depending on the each instructor. Note that you need to come to school during the registration period if an interview is to be held. Please refer to the list of screening method by checking the above-mentioned "Course list and information on each seminar course ( http://www.waseda.jp/fire/sils/en/students/registration/ )"(will be released from the beginning of August). 7.How to apply Please apply for your desired seminar course through MyWaseda (Please note that the registration page for Advanced Seminar is different from the regular course registrations page). If you fail your 1st semester of Advanced Seminar 1) Students registered for three semesters of advanced seminar, and who have failed the first semester, will need to do one of the following: (a) gain the permission of the instructor to remain in the seminar program, and so be able to graduate in the usual eight semester period but with only two semesters of an advanced seminar credit. (b) transfer to another advanced seminar, also making possible graduation in the usual eight semester period but with only two semesters of an advanced seminar credit. (c) withdraw from the advanced seminar track (however this does not apply to students admitted between 2004 and 2008, for whom completion of an advanced seminar and senior thesis is required). Any credit shortfall will be made up for with intermediate or/and advanced course credits. That is, two credits in the case of (a) or (b), and ten credits in the case of (c). 2) Students approved to register for only two semesters of advanced seminar, and who have failed the first semester, have two options: (d) with the permission of the instructor, complete the required two semesters of advanced seminar and senior thesis. However this would require delaying graduation by a semester. (e) withdrawal from the seminar program, with the eight credit shortfall met with intermediate or/and advanced courses. (This is not an option for students who entered between 2004 to 2008 as they are required to complete an advanced seminar and senior thesis).
