What is PIM and what causes it?
In a passive non-linear radio frequency (RF) circuit, PIM is the interaction of fundamental signal frequencies that produces
extra unwanted signals. These unwanted signals inadvertently produce many signals at other frequencies. These
frequencies, called harmonics (integer multiples), are what cause signal interference.
From an antenna performance perspective,
PIM typically occurs when:
From a design, deployment and usage perspective,
PIM is typically caused by:
• PIM products fail in the receiver band
• Surface oxidation in the RF path
• Two or more transmitter channels share
a common antenna
• Improperly torqued connectors
• Transmitter signal levels are high
• Insufficient metal plating
• Transmitters and receivers are duplexed
• Poor solder connections and splatters
• Contact between dissimilar metals as a
result of insufficient plating of metal
• Structures or objects close to the cell site
• Improperly torqued connectors
• Structures or objects in close proximity to the site
• Loose metal-to-metal contacts
• Nearby ferromagnetic materials
• Component vibration

High-performance active components
are also highly susceptible to PIM
Over the years, PIM has evolved from a virtually unknown DAS performance metric into
a critical system requirement. Network performance, as identified by download speed,
is highly susceptible to smaller levels of distortion that significantly impact performance.
Hyper-sensitive antennas and radios, multiple frequency overlays and more components in
the RF path create an environment where the margin for error for PIM continues to shrink.
Download speeds are critical in DAS environments like stadiums, where many components
in the RF path can generate PIM. Splitters, hybrid couplers, directional couplers and
tappers are being installed closer to active signal sources. To accommodate this closer
proximity, minimum PIM specifications for these signal distribution components continue to
rise.

Hybrid Couplers
Hybrid couplers combine two wireless carriers to a single antenna
feed or cable. They maximize isolation in wireless bands by using a
few solder joints and contain an air dielectric to minimize loss and
enhance reliability. One feed requires the termination of an output
port in 50 ohms and results in a 3 dB loss per signal. Using both
outputs for two similar feeds eliminates the loss.
