Type T transfer blocks are designed to retain one or more keys (called held keys) while the remaining (initiating) key(s) are removed. This allows an exchange of keys for two or more interlock sequences. All initiating keys must be inserted into the Type T block before the retained keys can be removed. Once a retained key is removed, the initiating keys are trapped in the interlock. Type T interlocks are called transfer blocks because there is no locking bolt projecting through the base for locking any moving part. Usually the need for a Type T transfer block can be eliminated by using multi-cylinder interlocks mounted on other devices, making it unnecessary to go through an additional transfer lock operation. The transfer block housing is made from brass. OPTIONS • Key Removable - specify which key(s) are initiating "E" and which key(s) are held "W". • Multi-Cylinder - up to 15 cylinders available. The main body is typically attached to a door or hatch that swings open. The latch block is typically bolted to the door frame. When the key is turned and the door is opened, the main body and latch block are separated causing the key to be trapped and the locking bolt to be held in the withdrawn position. The key is always held in the Type D interlock whenever the two parts are separated. When the door is properly closed, the lock body seats fully against the latch block, releasing the locking bolt. The operating key can now be rotated to extend the locking bolt into the latch block. After the locking bolt is fully extended, the operating key may be removed. The interlock housing is made from brass. The lock bolt is made from 5/8" diameter stainless steel. OPTIONS • Key Removable - a single cylinder Type D interlock is always built key removable "E", which means the key is released only when the lock bolt is extended into the latch block (door closed). • Multi-Cylinder - up to five cylinders available. The first cylinder should always be "E" (see Key Removable option above). A multi-cylinder Type D requiring all keys to unlock the door should have each cylinder designated "E". Any cylinders that are designated "W" will release a key when the door is unlocked - such as a personnel key. ("W" keys are trapped when the door is locked - "E" keys are trapped when the door is unlocked.) • Stamp Key Interchange - specify an alphanumeric code to be stamped on the cylinder face and the key (e.g. A1, A2, B1, etc. - up to 5 characters). It is well suited for loose fitting doors or hatches that will not accommodate a precise fitting door lock. The Type DM consists of a main body and a latch bolt with twelve links of 316 stainless steel chain. The lock body can be mounted to the equipment and the chain can be bolted or welded to the door or hatch with the proper amount of “slack” for the latch bolt to reach the DM lock body. Under normal conditions the key is upstream in the interlock scheme and the chain/bolt is trapped in the lock securing the door in the closed position. The latch bolt cannot be released until the key is inserted and turned. Only then can the latch bolt be rotated 1/4 turn and released from the lock – thereby trapping the key. The door or hatch must be closed and the latch bolt must be returned to the lock body in order to free the key. The interlock housing is made from brass. The latch bolt is made from 316 stainless steel and has a gasket to protect against the introduction of dust and dirt into the lock body. OPTIONS • Key Removable - the single cylinder Type DM is always built key removable “E", which means the key is released only when the latch bolt is trapped in the lock body (door locked). • Multi-Cylinder - up to 2 cylinders available. The first cylinder will always be "E" (see above). A two cylinder DM interlock requiring two keys to unlock should be designated "E" for both cylinders. If the second cylinder of a two cylinder DM is to provide a "Personnel Key" that is available when the door is unlocked, designate that cylinder as key removable "W".("E" keys are trapped when the door is unlocked, "W" keys are trapped when the door is locked.) All primary (initiating) keys must be inserted into the transfer panel before any secondary (retained) keys can be turned and removed. Once a secondary key is removed, all primary keys are held captive in the transfer panel. Transfer panel primary keys are generally related to power sources (such as breakers, T/R switches, level detectors, etc.) and secondary keys are often associated with access doors. Transfer panels add real value when the total number of keys at the transfer step exceeds eight. Transfer keys, locks, and mechanical linkages are completely enclosed in a NEMA 12 enclosure made of 14 or 16 gauge steel. Advantages of transfer panels include: • Reduced installation costs - one location for enclosure containing large quantity of keys. • Reduced key handling - simplifies total system with only one key transfer step. This saves time for operating personnel. • Protection - all locks and keys are protected from the environment. OPTIONS • Key Sequence - When ordering, specify the number of primary and secondary keys. Primary keys are removed from the transfer panel and retained in other interlocks. The key is trapped or released according to the position of the cam. It is designed to be installed with provisions or bracketry provided by the breaker manufacturer. The Camlock can be linked to other camlocks with the proper bracketry. The Camlock is manufactured so that it normally turns clockwise to trap the key. If counterclockwise rotation is required, a small set screw can be easily moved from one side of the interlock to the other to facilitate CCW rotation. The Camlock is made from brass. The hex mounting nuts are zinc plated steel. OPTIONS • Stamp Key Interchange – specify one character code (A, B, 1, 2, etc.) to be stamped on the cylinder face and on the key. See SD Series Data Sheet 3.4 and 4.1 for details. Note: due to the small size of this interlock, two characters cannot be used for the key interchange. The catch is available in two styles, one suited to well aligned doors, the other suited to mis-aligned doors. The lock body is typically attached to a door or gate that swings open. The catch is typically attached to the door frame. The DC interlock is designed for use on light duty panel doors in dry, non-corrosive environments where the interlock is subject to light to medium use. When the key is turned and the door is opened, the lock body and catch are separated causing the key to become trapped in the lock. The key is held in the interlock as long as the door is open. When the door is properly closed, the catch seats fully into the lock body allowing the key to be turned and released, thereby locking the door closed. The standard Type DC interlock is designed to accept the catch from the rear (or back) of the lock body. All parts of the Type DC interlock are made of brass. OPTIONS: Catch Type - Optional spring mounted catch (Flex Catch) is available for badly mis-aligned doors. Front Catch Option - The Type DC interlock is available with a front entry catch for applications where the door or gate opens by swinging inwards. The solenoid is designed to permit removal of the interlock key in response to an external electric signal. The auxiliary switch is a quick-make, quickbreak device, which operates when the interlock key is rotated. Normally, the key is trapped in the SKRU and the solenoid is de-energized. To release the key, a signal must be sent to the solenoid from an external source. The SKRU is typically used in combination with other KIRK® key interlocks. The SKRU can be manufactured with various mechanical and electrical options. The push button and/or the LED signal lamp are the most popular options. All components are UL recognized. The solenoid, optional signal lamp and optional push button are wired out to a terminal block along with some of the aux contacts. Please reference the wiring diagrams on our website for specific details. The main body of the SKRU is constructed of brass. The optional cover plate and optional housing are aluminum. OPTIONS • Mounting Options – unhoused, cover plate only, or housed. The photo above shows the unhoused SKRU. The cover plate mounted version is shown on the next page. The Type K auxiliary switch can be mounted on the following interlocks: • Type F (see SD Series Data Sheet 1.1) • Type B (see SD Series Data Sheet 1.2) • Type T (see SD Series Data Sheet 1.3) • Type D (see SD Series Data Sheet 1.4) The DPDT switch is UL and CSA recognized and rated 10A 250VAC or VDC, or 15A 125VAC or VDC. The toggle switch is operated in response to the movement of the interlock locking bolt. However, the Type K switch remains in its initial position until the locking bolt has traveled substantially the full 3/4” distance to its second position. Therefore, the Type K auxiliary switch does not give an indication as to the initial movement of the locking bolt. To order the K Switch option, put the number “1” in column four of the interlock part number. Reference the Interlock Ordering Guide. The switch is normally mounted with the cover on the same side as the lock cylinder. If necessary, the switch can be mounted so that the switch cover is facing backwards (or “Reversed”), allowing access to the switch for an interlock that is mounted on the back of a panel, for example. To order the "Reverse Switch Housing” option, put the letter “R” in column fifteen of the part number. Reference the Interlock Ordering Guide. Unless specified, the switch housing will be mounted in the normal arrangement. The switch housing is made of aluminum. Note: Auxiliary switches cannot be field installed on existing KIRK® interlocks. Provided by NEPSI - Northeast Power Systems, Inc. The TDKRU is comprised of two key interlocks, a timing device, a solenoid, and a signal light for indication. The photograph illustrates the TDKRU in the normal position - a key is retained in the secondary interlock. A primary or initiating key is introduced to start the time delay. After a predetermined delay, the solenoid is energized (the LED signal lamp illuminates to indicate the energized state) – permitting the secondary key to be rotated and withdrawn for further steps in the overall interlock scheme. After removing the secondary key, the primary key is retained in the TDKRU. Should the primary key be rotated and removed during the time delay period, the timing device instantly returns to its original position. OPTIONS • Mounting Options – available housed in a fiberglass reinforced polyester enclosure or unhoused with cover plate only. • Timing Device – the time delay can be any length of time from 1 second to 30 minutes. This then provides more keys than are necessary for operation of the interlock system. Once the interlocks have been installed, all extra keys should be removed from the system and destroyed or retained by a responsible person. If additional keys are required due to loss or damage, please: 1. Print the Duplicate Key Release Form from our web site. 2. Complete the form and sign your name. 3. Fax the form and your purchase order to Kirk Key Interlock Company at (330) 833-1528 for immediate delivery. Record Keeping With our extensive record keeping dating back to 1945, you can rely on Kirk Key Interlock Company to coordinate and number your keys in coordination with existing equipment currently in service. Caution: The existence of duplicate keys in a KIRK® interlock system may compromise the safety of the system. To ensure correct operation of the KIRK® interlock system, it is necessary to remove all loosely or removably held keys before operating the equipment on which the interlocks are mounted. Do not use oil of any type as the oil will collect dirt and "gum up" the lock cylinder so that it will not operate. Kirk Key Interlock Company offers a Graphite Lubrication Kit (part number GL-1) complete with instructions for use. The powdered graphite is supplied in a plastic tube that can be "squeezed" to force a small amount of graphite into the lock cylinder. Work the key in and out and turn the key a few times in order to distribute the graphite inside the lock cylinder. Apply a small amount of graphite to each lock cylinder as part of your regular maintenance program in order to keep your interlocks working smoothly. NOTE: Stainless steel dust covers should be utilized to protect the lock cylinders when located outdoors or in a demanding environment. Dust covers are available separately and can be easily added to any interlock. If the interlock has been filled with oil or is not operating due to dirt and contamination inside the lock cylinder: Using an eye-dropper or syringe, force mineral spirits into the lock cylinder and try to work the key to enable the cleaning fluid to reach all internal parts of the lock cylinder. After allowing time for the mineral spirits to clean the internal parts, use compressed air to gently and thoroughly dry the internals of the interlock. Do not use highpressure air as damage could occur to the springs, pins, and drivers inside the lock cylinder. After thoroughly drying the interlock, lubricate the lock cylinder with a small amount of powdered graphite per the instructions above. Note that two applications of mineral spirits may be necessary for interlocks that are badly contaminated with dirt and oil. If the interlock will not operate after following the above procedures, contact Kirk Key Interlock Company for a Return Authorization Form and return the interlock to us for repair. Kirk Key InterlockCompany will quickly repair and recondition all interlocks for a nominal cost. Provided by NEPSI - Northeast Power Systems, Inc. A key interlock is a safety device applied to two or more moveable parts, preventing (or allowing) a movement or operation of one part only when another part is locked in a predetermined position. KIRK® key interlocks operate on the principle that the key can be removed only when the locking bolt is in a predetermined position. Important information required when ordering key interlocks: • Which lock type will physically fit on each device in your application? • How is the interlock scheme to work - what is the equipment sequence and various scenarios (if any)? • What locking bolt length is required? Note: locking bolts are referenced in their withdrawn position and always extend 3/4” when the key is turned. • How many lock cylinders are required and what are the key removable positions? • What is the name and location of the ultimate user of the interlocks? Kirk Key Interlock Company assigns key cylinder numbers based on this information and records that information for each ultimate user. • Is coordination with other interlocks required? If so, are the other interlocks existing interlocks or will another manufacturer or contractor order interlocks for coordination? Provided by NEPSI - Northeast Power Systems, Inc.
