Duties:
As a CO-OP Student Border Services Officer (SBSO) you will promote
compliance with Canada’s border, trade and tax legislation and regulations
through responsible enforcement, quality service and education; intercept
contraband goods, including drugs, firearms and other prohibited goods
from entering Canada and be responsible for assessing duties and taxes.
The duties of a Student Border
Services Officer require physical exertion. SBSO duties may also include
applying immigration legislation, conducting interviews and exams to
determine admissibility, preparing administrative reports, analysis and
decision making on files/cases.
Applicants should be aware of the requirement to have and maintain a
certain level of fitness in order to perform the duties of a Student Border
Services Officer.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Students occupying a SBSO position are NOT armed.
Hourly rates of pay: To be determined based on Treasury Board student
rates of pay, found at:

CBSA will coordinate the appropriate administrative processes for
candidates considered for employment. The successful completion and
maintenance remain the responsibility of the candidate and is a condition of

1. a valid Standard First Aid Certification (according to the Canada Labour
Code, Part II, Canada Occupational Health & Safety Regulations, Part

2. the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted
Firearms Safety Course. Further information on these courses can be

3. a high integrity personnel security clearance and a Secret security
clearance. This includes mandatory digital fingerprints, mandatory
standardized reference checks and completion of an Integrity
Questionnaire.
Successful candidates considered for employment will be requested to
obtain digital fingerprints on their own time and at their own expense. More

4. a Transportation Security Clearance for positions located at airports or
marine ports (if applicable);
5. the Control and Defensive Tactics (CDT) training, which requires
significant physical exertion;
6. a medical standard required to safely perform the functions of the SBSO
position. A physician (from Health Canada or designated by the CBSA) will

complete an Occupational Health Assessment Report which will attest to
your physical ability to perform the duties of the SBSO position and
participate in the required training prior to employment.
Additionally, candidates considered for employment must accept the
following conditions of employment:
1. have a valid drivers license where required;
2. wear and maintain a uniform, the required protective and defensive
equipment associated with the job as per CBSA standards;
3. work various shifts on rotation, including weekends and statutory
holidays;
4. work overtime as required;
5. operate a government vehicle, where required.
ASSESSMENT STANDARDS: The following assessment tools may be
used:
• Standardized test(s);
• Written Examination;
• Interview(s);
• Reference check(s);
• Employee Performance Evaluation Report(s) (for former Student Border
Services Officers).
Important Information:
The closing date may be extended to accommodate a need for additional
applications.
Candidates that are successfully screened in will be invited to write the
General Competency Test – Level 2 (GCT 2 - 314) and the Written
Communication Proficiency Test (WCPT-351) in January 2013. Additional
information such as exact date, time and location will be provided to those
candidates via e-mail.
As the majority of communication by CBSA is transmitted by email please
ensure that you set the appropriate parameters within your email accounts,
including junk mail, for ensuring you receive CBSA’s correspondence.
If you have previously written either of the GCT 2-314 or the WCPT-351
and were not successful on a previous occasion, 180 days must have
elapsed before you are eligible to re-write the test. Should you rewrite the
test before the retest period has elapsed, your result will not be valid and a
new retest period will be imposed from the new test date. The Border

Services Officer Test (BSOT) will not be valid for this selection process.
PLEASE NOTE: This process will be run concurrently with the 2012-2013
FSWEP campaign therefore, if you have applied on both processes, you
will be assessed once and your marks will apply to both processes.

Information:
Candidates are responsible for paying their own travel expenses incurred
to attend any assessments. Please note that no relocation expenses will
be reimbursed if the candidate moves as the result of the offer of CO-OP
student employment.
Candidates that are successfully screened in will be invited by email to

Saturday January 5, 2013 at 8:30am at UBC
Monday January 7, 2013 at 8:30am at Douglas College
Tuesday January 8, 2013 or Wednesday January 9 at 8:30am at SFU
Thursday January 10, 2013 at 8:30am at Kwantlen College
Friday January 11, 2013 at 8:30am at UFV
Candidates that are successful in the testing phase will be invited by email
to interview starting in early January through to early February of 2013.
Successful completion of both a CO-OP work assignment and your
educational program may lead to temporary or permanent federal public
