This benefit eliminates the need to reset tooling after a cup change and reduces downtime. • The various mounting configurations are adaptable to the most commonly used tooling systems and are easily interchangeable. Ball Mount Optional Sensing Port (shown) • Ball mount provides radial and angular adjustment, thereby providing greater flexibility during tooling set up. (Not all models) 1/4 Turn Twist Lock Function • Universal porting accepts most common standard fittings. Adapter • 0.040 Venturi (1mm) provides low air consumption (1.6 scfm@ 60 psi), and the possibility of additional cups per line, smaller air lines or smaller fittings. • Optional sensing port eliminates the need for independent proximity sensors, which reduces cost. • The optional internal check valve minimizes air consumption, thereby reducing cost. (Not all models) Twist Lok ® 4 IMPROVED FUNCTIONALITY The Twist Lok® cup mount continues the tradition of quick vacuum cup replacement by incorporating a quarter turn twist and lock functionality. The possibility of damaging the o-ring upon removal has been eliminated. The patented design eliminates steel fasteners that can vibrate free and cause damage to the die. “Continues the tradition of quick vacuum cup removal and replacement....” Besides being a cup mount, the Twist Lok® offers optional features of an onboard venturi, blow-off valve and check valve. All items are easily removable when cleaning or replacement is necessary. As an added benefit, none of the tooling’s critical setup dimensions need to be readjusted, allowing for minimal MTTR (mean time to repair). The venturi design has been optimized for use in the automotive pressroom and body shop. It features a 1mm diameter orifice for low air consumption, quick response time, quiet and clog resistant operation, while still maintaining a high degree of vacuum performance. “The only tool required is an Allen wrench....” “The Ball mount is the most popular as it offers radial and angular adjustment....” MINIMUM TOOLING REQUIRED A new feature available is the optional reversible porting. Reversible porting enables the ability to convert (in the field) a “left hand” mount to a “right hand” mount. This makes the routing of airlines clean and hassle-free. The only tool required is an 8mm Allen wrench and a means to push out the venturi and blowoff valve. MOUNTING OPTIONS There are four optional mounting styles from which to choose. The Ball mount is the most popular as it offers radial and angular adjustment while providing sufficient rigidity when using the Norgren Ultra Arm. The Poz-e-Lok® mount option offers superior rigidity when using the Poz-e-Lok® tooling system. The Flange mount option is popular with fixed or welded tooling structures. A: There are many models from which to choose. The two primary decisions to consider are the mount type and circuit type. Q: Which mount type is right for me? A: The mount types available are designated as type B, F, S & Z. Type B: Ball Mount - Compatible with ISI’s Ultra Arm. Type S: Swivel Mount - Compatible with the Ø.75” [19mm] swivel or “core” mount tooling systems. Type Z: Poz-e-Lok Mount – Compatible with ISI’s Poz-e-Lok Modular Tooling System. Type F: Flange Mount - Flange plate mounting is chosen when you want to permanently mount to a flat surface. Q: Which circuit type should I use? A: The varieties of circuit types were developed to suit customer requirements. Many times, the engineer has both technical and non-technical tradeoffs to consider during system design. It is our recommendation to carefully analyze the product characteristic tables and the circuit schematics before making a final selection. Circuit Type A: The Ported Adapter model is used to secure Vac-Lok equipped vacuum cups and accessories. This model does not generate vacuum or blowoff by itself and contains no moving parts. The use of a centralized vacuum system is usually required when this model is selected. Circuit Type B: The Basic Venturi model features vacuum and blowoff functionality with no moving parts. The venturi can be removed and cleaned but not as conveniently as the type D venturi. To generate vacuum, supply air to the venturi port “V”. To blowoff, supply air to both venturi port “V” and blow-off port “B” simultaneously. g To avoid dropping parts during a power loss condition, operate the V port with a normally open valve. Vacuum created during power loss will secure the part as long as pressure is available to operate the venturi. Circuit Type C: The Reversible Jet Checked Venturi model features vacuum and blowoff functionality with integral check and blowoff valves. It also features field reversible porting as well as hassle-free clean ability. To generate vacuum, supply air to the venturi port “V”. To blow-off, supply air to the blow-off port “B”. The intention of the check valve feature is to temporarily secure parts during a power loss condition. The check valve provides some time for an alternate course of action before damage occurs (to the part or the automation). Because vacuum cup systems can leak due to a variety of reasons, the check valve is not to be specified as a lone fail-safe device. a To conserve air and lower operating costs, non-porous air-tight applications can take advantage of the check valve feature by initiating a dwell time during the automation cycle. Since no air is being consumed during the dwell, a significant savings in operating costs can be realized. When supply air is shut off, vacuum quickly exhausts for an instantaneous part release with 0 SCFM air consumption and 0 dB(A) noise level. Q: Ar Are there optional jet sizes to choose from? A: The Ø.040” [1mm] venturi is the only size available at this time. It’s optimized for efficiency and evacuation response. Preventative maintenance and proper filtration will insure 15,000,000 MCBF in most applications. Q: Is metric or english porting an option? A: Unless otherwise specified, all Twist Lok models feature universal ports compatible with NPT, BSPT, ISO R, ISO G & BSPP fittings. Q: What is field reversible porting? A: Field reversible porting allows the end user to decide which end of the venturi to connect the airlines. For best results, follow the simple procedure recommended in the Twist Lok Installation, Maintenance and Repair manual. Twist 25 Lok ® Application Notes Q: Can I use Twist Lok as a drop in replacement for my existing cup mount? A: Vacuum cup mounting dimensions for mount types B, S & Z are identical to the equivalent VV265 products. Please see the mounting options on page 6. For all other dimensions and product combinations, carefully review the product data sheets before making a selection. Q: I used to order the UCM, VB265 and VV265, which is the equivalent Twist Lok model? A: The Twist Lok product line replaces many of the vacuum cup mount models previously offered by ISI Norgren. Please see the product cross-reference tables on page 27. Q: How many vacuum cups do I need for my application? A: For non-porous part transfer applications (i.e. sheet metal), consider the theoretical holding capacity of the vacuum cup and the weight of the part. ISI’s vacuum cups are typically rated with a 2:1 safety factor. We’ve found this to be adequate for most applications. For porous applications (i.e. open cell foam), testing is often required. Contact our sales staff to review your application. Q: How much air is required to operate a venturi cup mount? A: Refer to the air consumption parameters as specified in the product characteristic tables of each model. Air consumption and pressure drop are factors often overlooked. For a successful vacuum tool design, valving and plumbing must be considered. This is especially important for designs with a large array of vacuum cups. Carefully review the product characteristics table in the product data sheets and size the system accordingly. a To minimize the effect of pressure drop, use the shortest length hose and largest internal diameter possible to meet system design criteria. You’ll find optimum performance in the pressure range of 55-75 psi at the vacuum cup inlet. Keep in mind, the more venturis you add to your system, the higher the air consumption will be! Q: How do you calculate cycle time for pick up and release of a part? A: First, you must know how much volume needs to be evacuated. Refere to the vacuum cup reference table on page 23 to find the volume for ISI’s vacuum cups. Once the volume is known, you simply multiply volume by response. Reference the response parameters in the product characteristics tables.
