This extensive line of Low Level Luminaires has
been designed to provide specifiers with a broad
spectrum of lighting solutions for pedestrian
areas. Each Luminaire provides unique features
for brightness control, vandal resistance, and
architectural compatibility. In addition, each fixture
has an aesthetic relationship to various Kim pole
mounted luminaires, following the Kim Theory of
Relativity as a matrix for providing the proper
scale and visual logic to the overall outdoor
lighting scheme.
Since Low Level Luminaires can be subject to
vandalism in unsecured areas, most of these
fixtures have been engineered to provide superior
strength through extra thick components, and
base-to-grade connections that withstand
considerable force. Outstanding performance is
provided by reflector and/or lens designs that
delivers broad illumination with low brightness.
In combination, the performance, design, and
ruggedness of these Kim luminaires is unmatched
in the lighting industry.

The Relationship of Outdoor Lighting to Site and Architecture
KIM THEORY OF RELATIVITY
The purpose of this guideline is to bring a cohesive look to outdoor
lighting, maximizing lighting efficiency while preserving the
architectural experience. Simply stated, the Kim Theory of Relativity
says “Poles belong in parking lots. And, once you leave the parking
lot, the outdoor lighting should become less and less conspicuous
until it becomes an integral part of the architecture.” In addition, the
luminaire style and geometry should remain consistent. If this
guideline is utilized, the outdoor lighting will enhance the site and
architecture, bringing unity to the outdoor lighting scheme.

PEDESTRIAN ZONE
Parking lots and roadways require luminaires on 20' - 40' poles to efficiently light
these large areas. Therefore, this lighting becomes dominant, and sets the design
and style for all other lighting as you progress towards the building.
As you leave the parking lot and transition to
pedestrian areas, poles should decrease in
height to 10' - 16'. In addition, luminaires should
decrease in scale, and can have more decorative
features to be appreciated at the pedestrian level.

Near the building, luminaires should begin
to disappear, blending into the landscape
and hardscape elements.
No pole mounted luminaires should ever be used near the building, as they will
dominate the architecture. The only exception would be the use of decorative
luminaires to delineate entrances to the structure. Building mounted, architecturally
compatible fixtures should be almost invisible.

Bollards are installed with anchor bolts imbedded in a poured-in-place concrete footing (by others). Internal anchor
base is leveled prior to placing the riser. When installing in soil or landscaping, the concrete footing should be
raised at least 2K" to avoid corrosive contact between fixture and soil or standing water.

VRB1 and VRB3 Horizontal louvers provide 360° of down-lighting
with total lamp source cutoff above 90° horizontal. Designed for
lighting walkways, entrances, courtyards, and landscaped areas
where fixtures are viewable from all directions. See page 10.
VRB2 and VRB4 Horizontal louvers provide 210° of cutoff downlighting, and vertical louvers provide 150° of non-cutoff accent lighting.
Designed for lighting walkways where adjacent building facades, walls

Specifications

relamping access, allen screws shall not require complete removal.

Material: Cement shall conform to current specifications for “Portland
Cement.” ASTM C150, Type I or II. Aggregates shall meet current
requirements of “Specifications for Concrete Aggregates,” ASTM C33. Water
shall be clean and free from deleterious amounts of silt, oil, acids, alkalies or
organic materials. Wire for reinforcement shall conform to ASTM A185. Steel for
lugs and plates shall conform to ASTM A36, or A283 grade D.
Surface: Medium sand-blasted with anti-graffiti sealer. Available colors are
Charcoal, Brown, Natural Gray or White, integral in concrete mix.
Cure and Strength: Allows for completion of the hydration process, and result
in a 28 day compressive strength of not less than 4,500 psi.
Manufacture: Fiberglass molds used to insure uniform parts. Mold parting
lines may be slightly visible in finished parts.
Anchorage: Four steel mounting tabs for installation on four K" x 10" + 2" zinc
electroplated L-hook anchor bolts. Each anchor bolt is supplied with two nuts,
two washers, and a rigid pressed board template.
Shipment: Palletized with adequate hold-downs to prevent load movement
in transit.

Specifications
Top Cap: One-piece, low-copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum F" minimum
thickness, secured to louvers by concealed allen screws in keyhole slots. For
relamping access, allen screws shall not require complete removal.

Louvers: One-piece, low-copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum with horizontal and
vertical blades. Horizontal louvers shall provide 210° of downlighting with
source cutoff above horizontal. Vertical louvers shall provide 150° of non-cutoff
lighting. Horizontal louver blades shall have a 1L" depth with a 65° upward
pitch from horizontal. Vertical louver blades shall have a 1L" depth with 30°

Lamp Enclosure: One-piece tempered molded glass with internal flutes and
full gasketing at bottom edge.
Socket: Porcelain medium base socket rated 4KV for HID and incandescent.

42W Fluorescent: High power factor with starting temperature of 0°F.
VRB2C and VRB4C - Factory mounted to rigid harness for field wiring and
suspension from fixture head within the concrete shaft. Wire leads supplied to

VRB2C and VRB4C Concrete Shaft Specifications
Material: Cement shall conform to current specifications for “Portland
Cement.” ASTM C150, Type I or II. Aggregates shall meet current
requirements of “Specifications for Concrete Aggregates,” ASTM C33. Water
shall be clean and free from deleterious amounts of silt, oil, acids, alkalies or
organic materials. Wire for reinforcement shall conform to ASTM A185. Steel for
lugs and plates shall conform to ASTM A36, or A283 grade D.
Surface: Medium sand-blasted with anti-graffiti sealer. Available colors are:
Charcoal, Brown, Natural Gray or White, integral in concrete mix.
Cure and Strength: Allows for completion of the hydration process, and result
in a 28 day compressive strength of not less than 4,500 psi.
Manufacture: Fiberglass molds used to insure uniform parts. Mold parting
lines may be slightly visible in finished parts.
Anchorage: Four steel mounting tabs for installation on four K" x 10" + 2" zinc
electroplated L-hook anchor bolts. Each anchor bolt is supplied with two nuts,
two washers, and a rigid pressed board template.
Shipment: Palletized with adequate hold-downs to prevent load movement
in transit.

walkways, entrances, courtyards, and landscaped areas where

VSB2 Horizontal louvers provide 270° of cutoff down-lighting, and
vertical louvers provide 90° of non-cutoff accent lighting. Designed
for lighting walkways where adjacent building facades, walls or
landscaping may be enhanced by a vertical wash of light. Fixtures

Specifications
Top Cap: One-piece die-cast, low-copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum F" minimum
thickness, secured to louvers by concealed stainless steel allen screws
in keyhole slots. For relamping access, allen screws shall not require
complete removal.
Louvers: One-piece die-cast, low-copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum with horizontal
and vertical blades. Horizontal louvers shall provide 270° of down-lighting with
source cutoff above horizontal. Vertical louver shall provide 90° of non-cutoff
lighting. Horizontal louver blades shall have a 1L" depth, and be angled 25° from
the horizontal. Vertical louver blades shall have a 1L" depth with a 45° spacing.
Louver castings shall be secured to shaft by four internal tie rods.
Lamp Enclosure: One-piece tempered molded glass with internal flutes and full
silicone gasketing at bottom edge.
Socket: Porcelain medium base socket rated 4KV for HID and incandescent.
Plastic socket for Fluorescent.
Fixture Head: Allows flow-through ventilation around and above the
lamp enclosure.
Shaft: One-piece extruded aluminum, .156" minimum wall thickness with a heavy
cast aluminum anchor base concealed within the shaft. Hex socket stainless
steel screws shall lock shaft onto the cast anchor base.
Ballast: VSB2 - Factory mounted to rigid harness attached to the anchor base.
Wiring shall be supplied from the socket for field connection to the prewired
ballast components. HID: High power factor with starting temperatures of -20°F.
for PMH and -40°F. for HPS lamp modes. 26W, 32W, 42W Fluorescent: High
power factor with starting temperature of 0°F. VSB2C - Factory mounted to rigid

Material: Cement shall conform to current specifications for “Portland Cement.”
ASTM C150, Type I or II. Aggregates shall meet current requirements of
“Specifications for Concrete Aggregates,” ASTM C33. Water shall be clean and
free from deleterious amounts of silt, oil, acids, alkalies or organic materials. Wire for
reinforcement shall conform to ASTM A185. Steel for lugs and plates shall conform
to ASTM A36, or A283 grade D.
Surface: Medium sand-blasted with anti-graffiti sealer. Available colors are
Charcoal, Brown, Natural Gray or White, integral in concrete mix.
Cure and Strength: Allows for completion of the hydration process, and result in
a 28 day compressive strength of not less than 4,500 psi.
Manufacture: Fiberglass molds used to insure uniform parts. Mold parting lines
may be slightly visible in finished parts.
Anchorage: Four steel mounting tabs for installation on four K" x 10" + 2" zinc
electroplated L-hook anchor bolts. Each anchor bolt is supplied with two nuts, two
washers, and a rigid pressed board template.
Shipment: Palletized with adequate hold-downs to prevent load movement

Performance Bollards
Features
Clear lamp placed high in the optical system
Placement of the lamp high in the optical system places the
arc-tube above the horizontal illuminance plane. This reduces
refractor brightness while increasing luminaire efficiency in the
desired luminous zone at 60° from vertical.
Hydro-formed Reflector
Hydro-formed reflector redirects light down onto pathways, away
from viewers’ eyes. Special design features direct light around the
lamp to increase illuminance while eliminating streaks and shadows
in the beam pattern.
Fluted Glass Refractor
Precision molded tempered glass refractor spreads light evenly in
the beam pattern and eliminates shadows from the luminaire’s
support structure.
Stepped Body Baffle
The stepped design of the lower body reduces surface brightness
and provides an attractive texture. Die-cast construction produces
sharp detailing.
Split Beam Optics
Reflector design redirects light away from the lamp and into the
useable beam pattern. This provides high illuminance, without
unnecessary brightness. The optical system is sealed top and
bottom to eliminate the intrusion of dirt and insects.
Shadow-less Lighting
Working in tandem with the upper reflector, the refractor spreads
illuminance laterally. This produces a smooth and even beam
pattern with no shadows from the fixture’s structural elements.

Louvered Bollards (VRB and VSB)
The GEM™ is designed to produce high levels of illuminance and an
attractive lens presence. The visible lens produces a point of
interest and attracts attention. Particularly well suited where bollards
are used to identify and highlight entries or important walkways.
Louvered bollards produce minimal brightness, wide low-level
illumination, and incorporate an optical system protected by heavy
cast louvers. The robust louvered bodies are well suited to vandal
prone areas, and where fixture brightness is undesirable.

Construction
The GEM™ lighted head is constructed of die-cast aluminum, with a
molded glass refractor. Four captive, stainless steel fasteners are
concealed from view, yet provide easy access for routine
maintenance. The lens is not disturbed during re-lamping.
The fixture head is secured to the shaft with heavy-duty stainless
steel rods.

Hood and Lens Frame: Die-cast, low copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum alloy
with stainless steel hinge. Hood is opened by loosening one stainless
steel captive button-head socket cap screw. F" thick clear flat tempered
glass lens seals against the lens frame by a one-piece molded silicone

Reflector Module: Specular Alzak® optical segments are rigidly mounted
within an aluminum frame and fastened securely to the hood. A porcelain
medium base socket rated 4KV is provided for HID, and a GX24q-4
universal socket is provided for fluorescent.
Body Support: BNB1, BNB2, BNB3: Die-cast, low copper alloy (<0.6%
Cu) aluminum flanges compress a ribbed extruded aluminum chamber.
The four heavy wall extruded aluminum support rods are mechanically
fastened to the lens frame with stainless steel fasteners. The support rods
are held in position through die-cast arms and mechanically fastened at
the bottom with a custom aluminum bolt. The electrical wiring is
channeled through a support rod with a brass bushing. BNB4, BNB5,
BNB6: Heavy low copper alloy (<0.6% Cu) cast aluminum wiring
chamber. The four extruded aluminum support rods are mechanically
fastened between the lens frame and wiring chamber with stainless steel
bolts. The wiring is channeled through the support rods.
Body Cap: Die-cast, low copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum, retained by two
captive stainless steel screws. Optional matte black finish to eliminate
bounce light. See page 35.
Shaft: BNB1, BNB4: One-piece aluminum extrusion, .125" minimum wall
thickness and two internal F" - 16 mounting rods sandwich shaft
between base and head. Four internal stainless steel hex-head bolts
secure the shaft to the anchor base plate. BNB2, BNB5: One-piece
fluted aluminum extrusion, .188" minimum wall thickness and two internal

Factor with starting temperature of 0°F. LED: A total of 9 LED emitters
configured in a rectangular array comprised together as a module. Two
(2) modules for 30 watt version; three (3) modules for 45 watt version; and
four (4) modules for 60 watt version. Available in “Halogen White”
(approx. 3500K). Emitters are directly attached to the electronic driver.
LED Driver: Constant current electronic driver. Rated for 30 watt, 45 watt

Full Cutoff Optics in SL1 - SL4
For projects requiring full cutoff pole-mounted luminaires for light
trespass or dark-sky considerations, the SL1 - SL4 maintains this
theme at the pedestrian level. Each SL fixture has an optical module
engineered to produce an asymmetric light distribution using a
horizontal lamp, and flat tempered glass lens. Because of the low
mounting height, coated HID lamps are recommended for optimum
uniformity of illumination.
Heavy-Wall Cast Aluminum Heads
Kim SL fixtures are specifically designed and engineered to
combine contemporary form with rugged vandal-resistant
construction. Low level luminaires are often subject to abuse
because of their proximity to pedestrian traffic. To combat this, all
fixture heads are heavy-wall one-piece aluminum castings.
SL models use concealed mechanical head-to-shaft connections for
greater strength and clean detailing. SL1 - SL4 models use flat
tempered glass lenses, and SL5 and SL6 models use flat
polycarbonate lenses.
One-Piece Extruded Aluminum Shafts
To achieve a clean sharp-cornered architectural appearance with
superior strength, all SL shafts are one-piece heavy-wall aluminum
extrusions. Integral mounting tracks are incorporated for mechanical
attachment of the head and base, which provides superior strength
over welding.
Low Profile, High Strength Base
The SL mounting base is unique in the lighting industry, combining
superior strength with a low-profile design. The shaft-to-base
attachment is by concealed bolts threaded into the shaft extrusion.
Kim tests show this method to be twice the strength of a welded
connection. Anchor bolts are provided with couplings, allowing
standard black stainless steel bolts to secure the base and
eliminate unsightly protruding anchor bolts.

Installation in Planted Areas
When SL fixtures are to be installed
in planted areas, slightly elevate
the base to avoid prolonged
submersion during heavy rains or
irrigation. Allow ground cover or
shrubbery to conceal the base.
In this application, the template
elevation must allow for any top soil
or mulch that will be added.
The SL template is the same size
as the fixture base, and can be
used to shape the concrete footing
to blend with the base casting.
A carefully leveled template will
provide a smooth flat mounting
surface and a level fixture.

Installation in Paved Areas
SL fixtures are easily installed in
paved areas with an option of a
standard or concealed base detail.
For standard base installations,
the concrete footing is poured with
the template at finished grade level.
While the SL base casting is very
low in profile, it can also be totally
concealed by paving up to the
fixture shaft. Although a concealed
base detail is aesthetically very
clean, it must be remembered
that future removal will be difficult
if required.
