General
Expectations on the car of the
future are very high. These include
reduced fuel consumption, minimal exhaust and electromagnetic
emissions and the highest possible
safety and comfort. Meeting these
demands will require highly advanced electronic systems in all
future new vehicles.
A good understanding of our
customers’ needs is the basis for
designing in the right film capacitor. Our automotive application
team will provide you with the solution that meets your requirements
and intensive support during all
stages of development, pre-production and mass production.
EPCOS provides reliable film capacitors, worldwide, for different
applications in modern automotive
electronics. We have decades of
experience in designing, producing and marketing film capacitors
for the automotive industry. We
work closely together with our
customers: due to the length of
time to bring a design to market,
a partnership is of vital importance
for business development in this
sector.
With our production facilities and
warehouses located all over the
world, we are in a position to offer
world class logistics to your door,
no matter where in the world you
are based.
EPCOS AG
We are continuously developing
programs for rationalization and
cost reduction. This allows us to
provide cost-effective products.
Thanks to EPCOS‘ strong global
presence and large experience in
film capacitors for automotive,
we can offer you locally the best
solution to your needs.
In the following pages you will
find an overview about our activities in the automotive sector. If you
require further information, please

excellent quality.
3
Trends in the Automotive Market
New trends in the market set
new special requirements for automotive electronics and thus also
for film capacitors.
Highest possible safety
and comfort.
We are witnessing an increase of
electronic control as well as the
appearance of new application
with high electrical power demand
such as electronic suspension and
power steering.
Excellent reliability and
performance.
Components and subsystems must
work perfectly under adverse climatic conditions and resist severe
mechanical stress.
Minimized electromagnetic
emissions.
New EMC directives require special
protection for electrical and electronic equipments.
Reduced fuel consumption and
minimized exhaust emissions.
The number of electronic controllers for Engine Management is
growing very fast.
The main special requirement on
film capacitors derivated from the
above mentioned market trends
are the following:
■
■
■
EMC protection
Thermal stability
Vibration resistance
■ EMC protection
The increasing presence of electrical and electronic devices in new
vehicles requires special arrangements to ensure electromagnetic
compatibility. This means the perfect function of the devices in their
electromagnetic environment without affecting other components
to an inpermissible extent.
EPCOS provides polyester capacitors in plastic case and powder
dipped construction for interference
suppression with a high electromagnetical attenuation coefficient
and excellent pulse handling
capability.

■ Thermal stability
The maximal operating and storage temperatures required in film
capacitors for different automotive
applications have increased notably
in the last years. In some cases,
the reason is the appearance of
new applications with mounting
locations exposed to severe temperature regimes. In other cases,
the increasing power demand of
some equipments, maintaining or
even reducing dimensions, produces higher operating temperatures (for example in generators).
Not only the maximal temperature
has to be considered. Temperature variation is also a key factor of
component design.
Special dielectric materials for
high temperature (PET-HT and
PEN) as well as thermostable, solid
plastic cases and sealing epoxy
resins allow EPCOS to provide reliable film capacitors with following
features:
■
■
■
Maximal operating temperature:
up to 150°C
Maximal storage temperature:
up to 170°C
Thermal cycles:
500 cycles (–40°C…+125°C)
100 cycles (–40°C…+150°C)

■ Vibration resistance
New expectations on operational
reliability of vehicles also set high
requirements on resistance to
vibration for electronic components,
depending on their mounting
location.
EPCOS offers film capacitors suitable for operation under severe
vibration regimes. This is possible
by means of different technical
solutions.

Advanced film capacitors in the
ignition unit and ballast of High
Intensity Discharge lamps (HID).
A quartz glass capsule filled with
inert xenon gas receives a momentary high voltage charge from an
ignitor, striking an electric arc to
light between two electrodes.
Once stabilized, it runs at low voltage supplied by a remote ballast.

Target
Product development
We plan the quality of our
products with multifunctional
teams (Advanced Product Quality
Planning). For this purpose we
use following tools:
■ Analysis on first samples
■ FMEA for products and processes
■ Quality Control Plans (QCP)
■ Statistical Process Control (SPC)
■ Process capability studies (Cmk)
■ Production Parts Approval
