About CU Science Discovery
CU Science Discovery is a science education
outreach program of the University of
Colorado, Boulder’s Division of Continuing
Education. Founded in 1983 to heighten
young students’ interest in science, we
coordinate an array of programs that connect
K-12 students and teachers to current CU
science. Each program utilizes CU scientific
expertise, equipment, resources and graduate
or undergraduate students in order to provide
K-12 students and teachers with unique,
hands-on science experiences. All programs
are designed to be highly interactive and
relevant, in order to engage students in the
scientific process while connecting them to
the science and technology present in their
everyday lives.
Through hands-on summer and afterschool classes, teacher workshops and
professional development, school programs,
and community outreach events, CU Science
Discovery impacts approximately 20,000
students, teachers and community members
throughout Colorado each year.

Engineering is Everywhere:
Bioengineering
Learning and Solving Problems with Design Process
Models is a 4.5 hour workshop that uses the
engineering design process as an integrating theme
for STEM learning in three engaging modules:
Many of today’s most pressing problems require
engineers who have a solid foundation in the
life sciences. This module immerses learners in
two design projects that address biomedical and
environmental issues. The hands-on challenges
illustrate how engineers improve our lives and
solve real-world problems while linking engineering
practices with earth, life and physical science content.
Photo Origami: Energy,
Design and Change
Inspired by the Photo Origami project at CU’s College
of Engineering and Applied Science, this module
challenges participants to design a light-activated
self-folding structure. Students will learn about
electromagnetic energy and change in physical
systems. They will develop their visual-spatial skills
as they investigate their material’s properties and
use their findings to design, test and refine a new
product. This module actively engages students in
both scientific inquiry and engineering design.
21st Century Materials
Can you write a circuit? Or print a new toy? Designed
to inspire the next generation of scientists and
engineers, this station-based module provides learners
with the opportunity to explore the materials of the
future! Play with polymers, see 3-D printing in action,
design systems with memory metals and experiment
with conductive paints, fabrics and materials.

research questions and assist BcCZO scientists
in their field work. Research projects will span
a range of disciplines, including geosciences,
ecology and evolutionary biology, limnology,
hydrology, and climate science. We’ll attend
evening presentations given by MRS scientists
and develop plans to integrate CZO science into
our classes.
