LEVEL 1 COURSE
SPECIFICATION
UNIT 1
5 credits
40 GLH
PRODUCT DESIGN AND VISUALISATION
The content for this unit includes teaching 2D drawing, 3D drawing, Computer Modelling and
Computer Aided Design (CAD). Students create designs for products, make physical mock-ups to
evaluate their designs and conclude with producing laser cut or 3D printed physical models.
UNIT 2
5 credits
40 GLH
PRODUCT MANUFACTURE
Product Manufacture focuses on design for production. The content teaches students to consider
aspects of production including assemblies, quality control, and the use of Computer Aided
Manufacture (CAM) to produce high quality parts.
UNIT 3
5 credits
40 GLH
SMART ELECTRONICS
Electronic components and programming is the core of this unit. Interaction or movement can then
be added to models created in the first unit via the integration of electronics. Students are taught
how to code for such things as flashing lights, buzzing sounds and simple movements.
INTEGRATED
PROJECT
Set students your own ‘Smart’ project brief or choose from one of BCA’s guided projects with
sample student work.
EXAM
Students take a short examination to gain Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.

LEVEL 2 COURSE
SPECIFICATION
UNIT 1
5 credits
40 GLH
PRODUCT DESIGN AND VISUALISATION
As with level 1, the content for this unit teaches 2D drawing, 3D drawing, Computer Modelling and
Computer Aided Design (CAD). The progression for students to develop their skills further is centred
on the creation of designs for intricate 3D forms. As such a more complex range of design techniques
will be covered.
UNIT 2
5 credits
40 GLH
PRODUCT MANUFACTURE
As a progression from level 1, students are taught about the complex logistics of manufacture in low
and high volumes and associated quality control. Students will develop an understanding of different
design techniques needed for manufacturing processes.
UNIT 3
5 credits
40 GLH
SMART ELECTRONICS
BCA content for this unit covers digital and analogue inputs, outputs, sensors, motors and controls.
Students learn how to storyboard user interface, respond to a brief and create and develop a ‘Smart’
product using the skills and knowledge from this and other units.
INTEGRATED
PROJECT
Set students your own ‘Smart’ project brief or choose from one of BCA’s guided projects with sample
student work.
EXAM
Students take an exam leading to A*-C GSCE equivalent grades.
