INTRODUCTION
This manual is intended for institutions interested in constructing the hardware
boxes used in the ECE200 laboratory. The manual includes the circuit diagrams of
the electronic circuits used, lists of components used on experiment boxes and
printed circuit boards including part numbers and prices from different vendors.
We recommend fabrication of the front panels at a professional machine shop.
AutoCAD files for the front panels are available upon request. These files contain
all the information a machine shop will need to drill the holes for mounting the
components. Nowadays, sophisticated computer automated drilling machines
accept AutoCAD files to do all the work automatically with great precision. The
AutoCAD files also include the silk screen designs, which can be used by most
companies specialized in silk screen printing on aluminum panels.
You can also obtain the electronic files used to generate the printed circuit boards.
The printed circuit boards in our hardware were designed using a free PCB design
package from ExpressPCB, which is an online PCB company. Their URL is:
http://www.expresspcb.com/
Using their PCB design software you can not only design the boards but you can
also place your order online. The ExpressPCB designs shown in this document are
also available upon request.

The AUTO CAD files for the above boards are in the Boxes/AUTOCAD folder.
PCBs
All the printed circuit boards were generated using ExpressPCB, the free software package of Express PCB, which is a web based company
specializing in manufacturing of printed circuit boards. You can download ExpressPCB from their site at http://www.expresspcb.com. The
software has both capabilities of receiving a quote from the company and placing the order online. Once you have ExpressPCB installed on your
computer, you can download our ExpressPCB designs by following the instructions below. The designs include top and bottom copper layers (red
and green) and a top silk-screening layer (yellow) for the letters. The PCB files can be downloaded from “PCBs/PCB Files” folder. The Parts list
to construct all the PCB files are in the spread sheet “Parts List for PCBs.xls” in the “PCBs/Parts” folder.
Amplitude Modulation Receiver: This is a simple envelope detector with an LC resonant circuit and a 741 op-amp amplification stage. The
circuit diagram and the PCB are shown below. The operation of the circuit can be analyzed in three stages:
n The inductor L and the capacitor C1 form a resonant circuit necessary to tune the radio to a particular station. In the experiment, we leave the
values of L and C fixed and change the frequency of the broadcast.
n The diode D1 forms the half-wave rectifier necessary for the envelope detection scheme.
n The Op-Amp provides on-site amplification of the envelope. It is an inverting amplifier with a gain of ~ 1500.

Anti-Aliasing Filter: This is a 4th order active low-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of ~ 4670 Hz. The purpose of the filter is to limit the
maximum frequency of the original signal sent to the sampling circuit. The reason behind this very low cut-off frequency is educational. We
realized that if the sampling frequency was switched back and forth between 20 kHz and 40 kHz, our students had a difficulty in hearing the
difference between the two signals. This was the case even without an anti-aliasing filter. Therefore in spite of the fact that the sampling theorem
was obviously violated with a sampling rate of 20 kHz, it was not feasible to use it for demonstration purposes. This prompted us to choose the
two sampling rates as 10 and 20 kHz, which required an anti-aliasing filter. The circuit diagram and the PCB are shown below.

Bessel Filter: This is an eighth-order low-pass Bessel filter that has a linear phase response and a tunable cut-off frequency between 1kHz and 20
kHz. It has regulated voltage supplies of +5 and –5 volts. The filter used is a switched capacitor filter whose cut-off frequency is decided by the
clock fed into the filter. This clock frequency is generated by a TLC552 timer and the frequency generated is varied using a potentiometer.
Hence, the cut-off frequency can be varied using the potentiometer on the board. The circuit diagram and the PCB are shown below.

Motor – IR Sensor: This board is mounted with a DC motor and an IR sensor. The IR sensor detects the rotation of the motor blade and can be
used to generate pulses which are amplified by an Operational Amplifier. The speed of the DC Motor can be varied by varying the resistance of
the potentiometer provided on the board. The BJT 2N3904 serves the purpose of translating the small resistance of the motor to a large value at
the output of the OP-Amp. It also serves the purpose of translating the output voltage of the OP-Amp to the DC motor with a threshold voltage
drop across the base –emitter terminals of the transistor. The circuit diagram and the PCB are shown below.
