hen families have a loved one diagnosed with a rare disorder like ectodermal dysplasia, they often feel
powerless and uncertain about the future. For more than three decades, the National Foundation for
Ectodermal Dysplasias (NFED) has worked to give them the support, information and resources they need to
feel empowered, confident and tenacious!
Empowered families are their own best advocates. Confident individuals will pursue their dreams. Tenacious parents will do
whatever it takes to provide for a bright future for their children and for future generations. These are the values on which we
base all of our programs at the NFED. We take our compassion for ectodermal dysplasias families and turn it into action.
You see it when a staff member allays a new mom’s fear and gives her extensive information. Liaisons connect with families
to share their experiences and turn their fears into hope. Children’s self-esteem soars as they bond with others like them at
Family Conference.
Watching a child with his first dentures or a teenager’s personality transform as he beams with happiness over his new
smile is life-changing. We help families overcome the obstacles they face to find a dentist willing to treat them through our
expanded network of Dental Treatment Centers, insurance mentoring and educating them on how to work with their dentist.
Our tenacious efforts for the past 20 years for x-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED) research are yielding
unprecedented results with Edimer Pharmaceuticals drawing closer to testing the safety of a potential treatment in affected
newborns. Their work gives promise that future generations of parents will have treatment options that were only dreamed
of 30 short years ago. Active family participation and funding projects for more rare ectodermal dysplasias like focal dermal
hypoplasia syndrome and ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-clefting syndrome moves us closer to understanding what
causes those rare syndromes.
To help us continue meeting our mission successfully, we will implement the Helping Hands program in 2013. This effort will
engage families and friends to participate, volunteer and give of their time and talents to the foundation.

How a Long Distance
Connection Helped New Parents
F
irst time parents, Warren and Shannon Brown,
were in complete shock when their daughter Erin
was born. Her skin was sloughing off as the nurses
tried to move her. It took six weeks and several wrong
diagnoses before doctors confirmed that Erin was affected
by ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-clefting (AEC)
syndrome. Life was hard for Erin’s first eight to ten months.
Dressing changes every three hours for her fragile skin
were painful. Overwhelmed, Warren and Shannon were
miserable to see their daughter in such pain. They felt so
alone. Shannon struggled to come to terms with the reality
that her daughter had so many challenges, none of which
she envisioned.
“I know I can post any question and
people will answer my questions
and share their experiences.”
The lead for the team of doctors treating Erin connected the
Browns with the NFED. They talked to the staff and then to
other families with AEC. They felt more reassured that Erin
was going to be ok and it wasn’t going to be the end of the
world. Erin connected with Ruth Geismar, whose 14-year-old
son Ryan was affected by AEC and had experienced skin
erosion like Erin’s.

2012 Support Spotlight
T
he NFED is the only agency in the United
States and the leading agency in the world
supporting the ectodermal dysplasias
community. We identified and helped 314 new
patients in 2012. We continue to support them and the
other 6,700 families through:
• The National Family Conference: Eighty-seven
families affected by six different syndromes from six
countries learned the latest treatment and research
information for their condition and networked with
a caring group of families who daily share their
challenges.
• Webinars: Two hundred people participated or
accessed six, free, online educational webinars on
ectodermal dysplasias treatment topics.
• Education Scholarships: The NFED awarded 10
students affected by ectodermal dysplasias $9,500
in scholarships to enable their college education.
• Family Liaison Program: The NFED connected
families with 20 Family Liaisons located throughout
the United States who are affected by ectodermal
dysplasias or are the parent of a child with the
condition. Liaisons provided moral support,
information, practical advice, and resource
information to help others know they are not alone.

crawling and can point to her head and tummy when asked.

Bringing Trae’s Smile to Life
T
rae Gulgin was 14 and had been wearing the same
pair of dentures for five years. His parents talked
to dentists from NFED’s Patient Care Council at a
Family Conference who saw cracks in his dentures. The teeth
were also too small now that Trae’s mouth had grown. They
suggested they talk to their dentist about new dentures.
Their dentist outlined several possible treatment plans. The
only challenge was paying for it. Trae’s dad, Troy, had just
returned to work after being laid off for 2½ years. The family
also had dental expenses in caring for younger brother, Ty,
also affected by XLHED.
“I didn’t know how we
were going to afford it.”
They turned to the NFED for help. A grant from the Treatment
Assistance Program enabled the high school student to get
his new smile. Trae, the competitive swimmer, loves it.
“Trae has a great outlook,” Trae’s mom Katie said. “He’s done
well. The assistance means a tremendous amount. I didn’t
know how we were going to afford it. We’re truly grateful.”

T
wo NFED programs are specifically designed
to help families receive and afford the dental
care they need with the third program focusing
on educating doctors and dentists.
• Dental Treatment Centers: We added five new
centers to our growing network. Families can now
choose from 20 locations where dental teams
experienced in treating the rare disorders provide
great care at more affordable costs.
• Treatment Assistance Program: Children, teens
and adults with ectodermal dysplasias face significant
dental expense to restore their smiles. We awarded
$80,000 to help 17 people get dental implants,
dentures, cooling vests or a wig.
• Professional Education: The Foundation
continued to educate dentists on how to diagnose
and treat the ectodermal dysplasias through
a dental symposium in Houston, educational
workshops at two dental schools, and updated
treatment publications.

he first research project funded was in 1989 to
Jonathan Zonana, M.D. for Gene Identification
of X-Linked Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia
(XLHED). That small investment of $10,000 started an
amazing journey. The gene was identified, a potential
treatment (EDI200) for eradicating the symptoms was
developed, and in 2012 EDI200 was administered to adults
affected by XLHED.
to face the philosophical question of ‘Do people not want
ectodermal dysplasia to exist?’ I became engaged in 2012
and thought about being a parent someday and how all of
my daughters would be carriers. Parents want to make their
children’s lives easier. I realized that EDI200 was a way to do
that. Ultimately, I knew this potential treatment was a good
thing and had the chance to affect the largest pool of people.”
Willing patients and their families stepped up to volunteer
for every research project along this journey to find a cure.
They gave blood, donated hair samples, underwent skin
biopsies, and completed surveys. Their tenacity brings us to
one of the most exciting times in the NFED’s history: Edimer
Pharmaceuticals will initiate testing of EDI200 in male infants
affected by XLHED during the summer of 2013 in clinical trials.
Based upon findings in animal studies, infants who receive
EDI200 may experience improvements in their ability to sweat,
increased number of teeth and potentially other effects.

One Man’s Choice
to Help Research
Twenty-nine-year-old Sean Vora has participated in
nearly every XLHED research project that the NFED has
sponsored. He was one of 30 boys in the early 1990s who
received dental implants in a project that demonstrated their
safety. Sean says his life seems to have run on the same
timeline of when important research was taking place. Yet,
he was conflicted when he first learned of Edimer’s clinical
trials to test EDI200 in affected adults.

worthwhile; worth doing. As an affected individual, I had to
question EDI200 and what does that mean for me? I had

with family and Edimer, he volunteered to become the first
adult affected by XLHED to receive EDI200 in Edimer’s
Adult Clinical Trial. In December, he underwent a series of IV
injections of EDI200.
“It felt great to be the first one. I understood that it was just
a trial and that it wouldn’t have effects for me. I hope this
research will serve as a gateway to help more ectodermal
dysplasia syndromes and impact people’s quality of life.”
2012 Research Spotlight
T
he NFED serves as a gateway between willing
patients and researchers looking to find cutting
edge treatments.
• Financial Grants: The Foundation awarded
$75,000 to three researchers studying focal dermal
hypoplasia syndrome and ankyloblepharonectodermal defects-clefting syndrome.
• Support for EDI200: The NFED supported Edimer
Pharmaceuticals’ research efforts related to XLHED
by marketing and recruiting participants.
• Ectodermal Dysplasias International Registry:
We recruited 489 affected patients to complete a
profile in the Registry bringing the total to 1,828.
• Ectodermal Dysplasias Classification
Conference: Thirty experts from around the world
participated in this landmark conference to develop
a robust classification system for the ectodermal
dysplasias. The American Journal of Medical
Genetics will publish all conference proceedings
providing extraordinary awareness for the NFED.

Volunteer Spotlight:
Angela and Dante Puorro
T
he Puorros were completely unprepared on a Friday
of a holiday weekend in 2010 when a dentist told
them their young daughter, Ava, with missing teeth
had ectodermal dysplasia. She couldn’t offer any more
information without further research. Google searches
produced scary things. The new parents felt they had no one
to turn to. Then they connected with the NFED online. The
liaison for their area, Dee Dee Olsen, quickly called them, put
their mind at ease and made them feel hopeful and confident
about their daughter and her future. From that point on, the
new parents turn to the NFED whenever they have questions.
In 2012, Angela and Dante decided it was time they gave back.
Because of four-year-old Ava’s love for animals, they created a
fundraiser called “Animals for Ava” at Turtleback Zoo and raised
more than $26,155 for the NFED and $5,400 in in-kind gifts.
“Words couldn’t describe the emotional feelings we had
hosting the event,” Angela says. “It was amazing to feel our
friends’ and family’s support. It made us feel our daughter is
loved! We had pure gratitude and amazement.”

Donor Spotlight: Joe Barone
A
t 93, Joe still vividly remembers the first time he
looked in the mirror as a teenager, smiled, and
saw teeth in his mouth. He wasn’t used to that. He
decided he didn’t care how long it took him to adjust to his
new dentures or learn to talk with them because he liked his
new smile. It gave him confidence.
Today, Joe gives to the
NFED because he believes
in the importance of children
getting their teeth before
they start kindergarten. It
eliminates the chance of
kids hurting their feelings
because they look different
from having just a few teeth
of their own.
“I love the conferences where you
can interact with the doctors and
learn so much. I was so happy that
someone could help me!”
While growing up, Joe thought his family was the only one
affected by ectodermal dysplasia. Now, with NFED, he says
it’s a big relief to know you are not alone.
“The NFED has just been great,” Joe says. “I love the
conferences where you can interact with the doctors and
learn so much. I was so happy that someone could help me!”
2012 Fundraising Spotlight
• Halloween Bash: The 12th annual event was
another magical night for the NFED raising $165,770
and incredible awareness thanks to the Geismar
family and the Bash committee.
• Don’t Sweat it Walk: We launched our national
walks as an innovative way to raise funds. Families
hosted seven walks across the United States and
raised $26,983.
• Other Fundraisers: We worked with numerous
other families around the country on hosting golf
tournaments, runs, Rally for Ally, and other exciting
events.

of the F.G. Danz Society, corporations, foundations and

In 2012, we created the F.G. Danz Society to formally recognize
individuals who invest in our mission with gifts of $1,000 or
more within the fiscal year. This major donor society is named
for a German, F.G. Danz, who wrote in 1729 a treatise titled
Concerning Men Without Teeth. “In our neighborhood lives
a Jewish family of which two adult sons, neither have, or
ever have had, hair or teeth.” This is the first instance of the
ectodermal dysplasias being described in literature.

Our Mission
To empower and connect people touched by ectodermal dysplasias through
education, support, and research.
Our Vision
The National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias will be a recognized
leader among health-related nonprofit organizations and will be known for
providing comprehensive services with loving care to individuals affected by
ectodermal dysplasias and their families; for helping individuals and families
benefit from early diagnosis and care, and for spearheading research that
ultimately develops a cure.
Ectodermal Dysplasias
The ectodermal dysplasias involve defects in the hair, teeth, nails and sweat
glands. Other body parts may be affected such as the skin, eye, parts of the
ear, and limbs. The 150+ types are identified by the combination of physical
features an affected person has and the way they are inherited. Symptoms
among syndromes and even within families can range from mild to severe.
Only in rare cases do ectodermal dysplasias affect lifespan and very few types
involve learning difficulties. The ectodermal dysplasias affect men, women
and children of all races and ethnic groups. As few as one or as many as 7 in
10,000 babies are born affected by ectodermal dysplasias.

Legacy
A legacy is something that is shared
or transmitted by an ancestor.
Greg Hickman’s family legacy included HED. But, he changed that
to a legacy of hope for future generations.

reg Hickman was a gifted digital artist, graphic
designer and filmmaker with a passion for golf,
basketball and inspired pranks. He was also a
good friend to the NFED.

screenplay featuring a version of his father, an HED-affected
man, as the main character.”
Greg understood the challenges of ectodermal dysplasia.
Multiple family members were affected including his father,
sister, nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. In
the 1990s, Greg began supporting the NFED by participating
in our Seattle Golf Tournament and giving to the Annual Fund.
In 2012, Greg was stricken with metastatic melanoma and
lost his dignified battle. His family shared with us Greg’s
wish to help future generations by including the NFED in
his will. He was inspired by the progress being made by
Edimer Pharmaceuticals’ possible treatment of XLHED and
NFED’s role.
His niece, Bonnie Rough shares, “Even though his HEDaffected father had died in 1979 at the age of 49, Greg
always felt close to the mystery and sadness of that
