Welcome to East Carolina, your “home
away from home”! This Move-In Guide
has plenty of information to help you
not only make your residence hall room
your home, but also let you know about
some of the options and opportunities
you’ll have here.
Hopefully, you’ve already talked to your
roommate numerous times and gotten to
know each other better. Campus Living
has planned the best time for you to
move in depending on where you’re living
this year. Each neighborhood has
staggered move-in dates and times to
make it easier for everyone moving in.
Check out the chart for your personal
neighborhood to see what the best days
and times are for you to arrive.
Just like what you were probably taught
about fire safety, if you follow three
suggestions, your move-in will hopefully
be less stressful and more enjoyable!
“Stop” in an one-hour
parking space available for
students to unload their
belongings from their car.
Driving directions to the
individual campus
neighborhoods and their
parking are provided in
their respective sections of
this Guide.
“Drop” off your
belongings from your car
into your residence hall
room.
Have a family member
“roll” your car to one of
the outlying parking lots
(Ficklen Stadium or Reade
Street Lots, depending on
your location) so that
other students can make
use of the one-hour
parking.
Two basic things – following the Golden Rule and the
Three C’s – will make your experience living in the
residence hall that much easier and more enjoyable. Treat
your roommate like you would want to be treated and
communicate, compromise and be considerate.
Recognize the major parts of living together like studying,
sleeping, cleaning, and visitors. If you roommate doesn’t
know that you’re a light sleeper and don’t like any sounds,
how can you blame them when they don’t use their
headphones for some late-night study music?
Most importantly, respect each other … respect each
other’s space, beliefs, and feelings. You don’t have to do
everything with each other and the two of you probably
won’t see eye-to-eye on everything, but you can work out
any differences you may have by simply being willing to
talk about things.
Much like the rumors that some residence halls are
haunted or you won’t graduate on time if you walk under
the Cupola, it’s a myth that roommates should be best
friends before they live together. Some people would say
that spending 10 hours every night in a small residence hall
room would be more than enough time together … would
you really want to hang out with them outside of that?
Part of college is enjoying the chance to make new friends
and have new experiences … one way you can do that is to
room with someone you don’t know that well. That way,
you can better find out the types of people who you really
connect with and have fun hanging out together. Expand
your horizons!
Also, just because you’re best friends doesn’t mean that
you’ll never have a problem with each other, quite the
opposite. Maybe you’re best friends because you have
different styles and different deal-breakers … you may love
your best friend’s carefree style in her room at home, but
can you live with it day after day?
Or what about
your dancing
and singing at
the top of your
lungs when the
mood hits you?
It might be
funny to your
best friend
once or twice,
but hearing
your rendition
of the same
Taylor Swift
song could get
old after the
20th time …
Take that
chance and
meet new
people … you never know, that person could end up being
another best friend!
If you do have a problem with your roommate, do
something really simple – talk to them! Don’t subtweet,
don’t rant on social media, don’t ask Mom or Dad to talk
to them … take the time to sit down with your roommate
and talk about what bothers you.
Most importantly, really listen to what your roommate
tells you. Maybe they’ve just been really stressed with
classes and simply forgot to do something; maybe all they
needed was that friendly reminder from you so that the
both of you can enjoy the space you call home.
If talking to your roommate yourself doesn’t work, talk to
your residence advisor about the problem. Sometimes
having someone else sit down with the two of you to help
clear the air is all that’s really needed; if that still doesn’t
help, talk to the coordinator of your residence hall. The
staff in your residence hall is always there to help if you
need them.
During the days of Move-in, parking areas around the residence halls are designated as one-hour
parking. Parking and Traffic personnel will also be available to assist with access, traffic direction,
information and enforcement of parking regulations. Your specific neighborhood Move-in chart will
have driving directions and more information on traffic patterns.
Please follow the “Stop, Drop, & Roll” instructions for the easiest way to move your belongings from
your car to your residence hall room. In order to decrease congestion around the residence halls, we
also recommend only bringing one car for Move-in. After you’ve unloaded your car, West and Central
Neighborhood residents can move their car to the Reade St. Lots (located at Fifth and Reade Streets);
College Hill Residents can move their car to Ficklen Stadium parking lots located just across 14th
Street.
Though the above parking is short-term fringe parking during actual move-in, longer-term parking for
first-year students is located at the Curry Court parking lot near Charles Boulevard and Greenville
Boulevard. ECU Transit runs bus shuttles from Curry Court to the residence halls and various places
on campus.
College Hill residents (Aycock, College Hill Suites, Gateway, Scott, Jones, Tyler Halls) should ensure
they purchase an A2 permit if they wish to park near their residence halls. Central and West residents
(Cotton, Fleming, Jarvis, Umstead, Clement, Fletcher, Garrett, Greene and White Halls) should
purchase a B2 permit. If you accidentally purchase a C2 or B4 permit (even if it’s offered), you should
contact ECU Parking and Traffic so that they can change your classification and issue you the
appropriate permit.
“Stop” for one-hour parking
available for students to unload their
belongings from their car.

Evening Check-In (8:00 pm- Midnight) and Check-In when the In Hall Check-In is closed will be located at the
Central West Neighborhood Service Office (NSO) in the West End Dining Hall.
In Hall Check-In Times are in Yellow.
Campus Living reserves the right to reassign
students to other rooms or halls when it appears
to be in the best interest of individuals, groups of
students, and/or the University. Reassignment
may also occur if Campus Living determines that
a student is no longer residing in a room.
If a student wishes to change their room
assignment, they can only do with written
authorization by Campus Living and after the
seventh day of classes (September 2, 2015) or as
spaces become available. Students should contact
their residence hall coordinator or their
Neighborhood Service Office (NSO) for
information; in order to avoid fees for an
improper checkout, students should coordinate
checkouts or room changes through the NSO.
The University recognizes both roommate as
equal tenants in the room; this means that neither
resident has a stronger claim on the room.
Residents should seek assistance from their
resident advisor and/or coordinator if a
roommate conflict develops. However, Campus
Living reserves the right to reassign both
roommates if the conflict cannot be resolved.
Residents should not automatically assume that
they now have a single room if their roommate
does not move in or moves out during the
semester. Residents may be charged a single-room
fee or face other University action if they do not
ensure that furniture provided for a roommate is
not keep clear of belongings. Though Campus
Living will make every effort to notify a resident
of an incoming roommate, there may be some
situation where advance notice cannot be given.
Residents who use their room as a single can be
charged an $800 single room fee or be moved to
another room. Residents who do not request a
single room or pay the $800 fee will be required
to find a roommate themselves or move into a
room with another resident. If residents wish to
move in to any open rooms that are already
designated as single or Campus Living has rooms
available as single-occupancy after the semester
starts, they can pay a prorated portion of the
$800 fee. Keep in mind, though, that residents
must still meet hall eligibility requirements if they
choose to move into a single room in another hall.
Residents may possess e-cigarettes, cigars, and
cigarettes, but may not use them in the residence
halls. In coordination with University policies,
Campus Living and Residence Hall policies
require that residents be at least 20 feet away
from a building if they choose to use these items.
Campus Living provides delivery of first class U.S. Mail (no bulk mail) to the Neighborhood Service Office
(NSO) Monday through Friday. The NSO also provides delivery of packages from services like FedEx and
UPS on days those services deliver. Residents will receive an email to their official ECU email address
notifying them when they receive mail or a package. Residents can then pick the item up during the NSO
hours with proper ID.
Residents should inform friends and family of their campus address and also inform parents and friends to
never send cash through the mail. The following format should be used on all incoming campus mail:
Student’s Name
Residence Hall Name and
Room Number/Box Number
East Carolina University
Greenville, NC 27858-4353
NOTE: Make sure you write
“Hall” or “Dorm” after the name
(i.e. Jarvis Hall) so that your mail
does not go to Jarvis Street.
The NSO only receives mail and sends out stamped or prepaid mail. The University Mail Services customer
service counter, centered on campus in Building 43 off of Founders Drive, provides many services available
through the U.S. Postal Service. The customer service counter is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents can enter the customer service counter on the west
side of Building 43, south of the Flanagan Building, adjacent to Slay Hall.
Services available here are similar to a traditional post office, including buying stamps or mailing a letter or
package. Standard mailing boxes are also available at no cost. For more information about campus mail, visit
www.ecu.edu/mail .
Do you need to have your Chick-fil-A fix at least once a day? Do you never leave home without your Starbucks
Rewards card? Would you like to be able to raid the University’s “refrigerator” whenever you’ve got the munchies? Or
would you rather sit down with your friends for a 2-hour lunch or dinner, complete with laughs and plenty of great
food?
All of these choices are possible with your Purple Meal Plan.
Whatever Purple Meal Plan you choose, you no longer need to hold up a sign at the football game that says “Hi Mom
and Dad! Send Money!” ECU’s Purple Meal Plan fits your lifestyle and your schedule. Whether you’re a fast food
fanatic or a healthy eater, everything you need to eat is at your fingertips simply by using your OneCard at any one of
the 28 dining locations on campus.
Pirate Meals let you eat your way … whether it’s three full meals a day or
just whenever you get the urge! All of the meal plans include Pirate Meals
except for the Purple Flex. You’ll get a certain number of Pirate Meals (70,
40, or 15) that you can use in food court locations like The Croatan, The
Wright Place, The Galley, Reade St. Subway, Destination 360, or either of
the dining halls. Each of these food courts will have a variety of Pirate
Meal choices to fit whatever you might be hungry for. Each of the dining
locations post specific full Pirate Meal specials.
Purple Bucks are like your own personal debit card that you can use
anywhere on campus just like cash. You can always add more “cash” to
your account if you’re running low and Purple Bucks can also be used in
either dining hall to save 10% if you buy a friend’s meal. Purple Bucks are
only good in the dining halls or other retail locations on campus.
Unused Purple Bucks will roll over from the Fall semester into the Spring,
but make sure to use all of your Purple Bucks by the end of the Spring
semester or you’ll lose them since they are a part of your meal plan for the
year.
There is nothing better than enjoying a soda and a hot dog in the
Jungle as you watch the Pirates play baseball, right? Or maybe you’ve
just got to have the nachos and a bottle of water at a home football
game? The Gold Rush plan is specially designed as an add-on feature
to your meal plan and offer $100 of food bucks for use at specific
concessions areas in places like Dowdy-Ficklen, Clark-LeClair
Stadium or Minges Coliseum for use on game days.
Add on more Gold Bucks any time you want and enjoy them for as
long as you’re at ECU … they’ll never expire until you graduate!
Meal Plan Cost
$1850 plus tax
The ability to choose
what and where
you want to eat!
You’ve got enough “on your plate” at ECU … so make sure that dining fits your needs! Choose the plan that fits best
with your style, choices and schedule.
If you’re a snacker or a full-fledged member of the Starbucks cult, the Purple Flex plan is the one for
you. This plan gives you the highest number of Purple Bucks – $550 in addition to your all-access
dining plan – and gives you the chance to choose the exact food that you want. Enjoy your all-access
option at either dining hall as well, and you’ll never go hungry.
Love the Chick-fil-A cow? Is Panda Express your go-to when you’re running around town? Take your
pick from a number of national brands on campus by using the 70 Pirate Meals offered to you each
semester with this plan. Have a different meal any day of the week and enjoy the food you’ve come to
love; you’ll still get unlimited access to the dining hall and $250 Purple Bucks for those spur-of-themoment purchases.
Good for the vast majority of students who live on campus, the Purple 40 plan gives you a nice mix of
40 Pirate Meals and $350 in Purple Bucks. If you live in Umstead Hall or the Cotton/Fleming/Jarvis
area, this plan might be the one for you … it gives you the flexibility of enjoying a Pirate Meal or just
swinging into one of the C-stores and picking up a bag of chips and drink whenever you don’t use your
all-access dining option at one of the dining halls.
If you’d rather eat a banana or apple over a pizza slice or maybe you have special dietary needs that you
have to follow, take a look at the Purple 15 plan. This plan gives you $450 Purple Bucks (just a little
less than the Purple Flex plan), but also offers 15 Pirate Meals for those times that you want to have a
fuller meal with your friends. Many students who are vegetarians choose this plan or the Purple Flex.
Decided to eat a little healthier and your plan isn’t quite the best for that? Easy enough to change that … just go to the
Meal Plan office at Todd Dining Hall and pick the higher or lower plan you want. We’ll be happy to make it the best
it can be! During the Fall, you can make changes any time before the Friday after Labor Day and any time before the
Friday after Martin Luther King Day for the Spring.
