Class 8660 Solid State Reduced Voltage Starters

INTRODUCTION
On October 16, 1995, Class 8660 Solid State Reduced Voltage Starters will enter the
“Reduced Availability” phase. At this time, Class 8660 devices should not be
recommended for new applications. Class 8660 devices will be replaced by:
• ALTISTART 23 open style soft start devices
• Class 8638 and Class 8998 enclosed ALTISTART devices
This bulletin is a cross reference guide between the Telemecanique ALTISTART 23
(ATS23) devices and the Square D Class 8660 solid state reduced voltage starters.
• Table 1 compares features and Table 2 is a catalog number cross reference for open
style ATS23 and Class 8660 soft starts.
• Table 3 compares features and Table 4 is a catalog number cross reference for
enclosed Class 8638 combination ALTISTART and Class 8660 soft starts.
Class 8660 soft starts will not be available for sale after April 16, 1996. However,
repair parts and service will be available for installed products until the
requirements dictate full obsolescence of the Class 8660 product line.
OPEN STYLE SOFT
STARTS
In comparison with the Class 8660 open style soft starts, please note the following
differences:
• The primary consideration in selecting an ATS23 device is the motor full load
amperage. ATS23 soft starts are available in 14 different amp ratings. All devices
can be configured for 200, 230, 380 or 460 VAC motors and are self adjusting for
50 or 60 Hz.
• Class 8660 open style soft starts are specified by Class/Type/Form. The 3rd digit
of the type number is “O”. ALTISTART 23 catalog numbers begin with “ATS23”.
• Open style ATS23 soft starts are manufactured by Telemecanique in France. All
units are stocked in the warehouse. As such, open style ATS23 soft starts are not
available with any additional factory modifications.

When ordering a Class 8638 enclosed ALTISTART
device, please note the following
differences and similarities to other Square D motor control products:
• Class 8638 devices are combination devices with a fusible disconnect switch,
similar to Class 8538 combination starters. Square D enclosed ALTISTART
devices utilize either a shunt trip coil on the molded case switch or an isolation
contactor to provide automatic disconnect of the motor if a shorted SCR is
detected. As such, non-combination devices are not available.
• Similar to the Class 8660 product line, the 3rd digit of the type number of Class
8638 enclosed ALTISTART devices indicates the enclosure type is NEMA 12.
Class 8638 devices are only available in a NEMA Type 12 enclosure and should
be recommended for both NEMA type 1 and 12 applications.
• A control power transformer (CPT) is provided as standard in all Class 8638
devices for 120 VAC control logic. (A Form and price adder was required to
include a CPT in Class 8660 devices.) Additional VA for customer use can be
ordered by Form with Class 8638 devices.
• Standard Class 8638 enclosed ALTISTART devices are available through 400 hp.
For applications up to 1000 hp, Class 8638 style combination soft starts are
available. Contact your local Drives Specialist for quotation assistance.
• ALTISTART devices are also available in a NEMA 1 or 12 MCC enclosure. Class
8998 enclosed ALTISTART products are also combination devices, available in
configurations similar to Class 8638 enclosed ALTISTART devices. Please refer to
the “Q/To” or “Quote To Cash” product selector for ordering information.
