AHIA 35TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: SEPTEMBER 11-14
2016
About the AHIA Conference
The theme of this year’s conference is: Come on Down to Georgia with Healthcare Audit on Your Mind.
The Association of Healthcare Internal Auditor’s (AHIA) 35th Annual Conference offers a programmatic
balance of foundational knowledge and topics that will help healthcare internal auditors prepare for the
unprecedented changes evolving in the current environment of
reform.
The conference offers six educational tracks to choose from, so that
you are able to capture the information most relevant to you. 77
sessions, featuring over 90 presenters, will provide attendees with up
to 30 CPEs. AHIA is the only professional, specialized association for
healthcare internal auditors. Our attendees generally come from large
hospitals, large physician group practices, academic medical centers
and health systems and plans from across the nation. As we know all
too well, navigating your way through the healthcare industry in an
era of convergence and reform and change can be daunting. If you
are not paying attention, you could be left behind, or worse, left out!
The AHIA Annual Conference offers healthcare internal auditing
professionals the opportunity to update their knowledge base,
stimulate ongoing professional growth and development and
network with colleagues who share your challenges and concerns. Expect the AHIA 2016 Annual
Conference in Atlanta to be fun-filled, packed with information and "take-aways" for immediate application,
and rich with many opportunities to network, make new friends and share your knowledge.
The 2016 Planning Committee has been working since December 2015 to develop a program that will be
interesting and addresses relevant topics facing each of us in our daily challenges. We have listened to our
members’ feedback and these comments are a driving factor in the development of this year’s program. Special
thanks to our dedicated committee members, without their hard work and tireless efforts, this conference
would not be possible:

AHIA Conference Tracks
The AHIA Annual Conference features six educational tracks to pick and choose from, in order to capture the
information, skills and resources most relevant to you.
AUDITOR’S TOOL KIT/NEW AUDITOR (TRACK A): The Auditor’s Toolkit/New Auditor track will
supplement the "auditor's toolkit" with fundamental audits from a healthcare perspective.
SPECIALTY/CLINICAL QUALITY (TRACK B): The Specialty/Clinical Quality track includes topics that
impact healthcare organizations exclusively. Healthcare reform legislation has increased the number
of issues which hospital executives are addressing resulting in an increased focus on clinical quality.
This track will help healthcare professionals better understand those issues so they can help guide
their organizations in these challenging times.
COMPLIANCE (TRACK C): The Compliance track sessions focus on increasing the healthcare
auditor's understanding of compliance risk areas. Healthcare audit professionals will improve their
skills in developing risk based compliance audit plans, evaluating key compliance risk areas, and
identifying control improvements.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (TRACK D): The Information Technology track is designed to meet
the needs of both the IT specialty auditors and general auditors with responsibilities for IT audit
service. The track covers IT hot topics in the healthcare industry by offering technical sessions
providing information on IT specific risks and controls as well as sessions on broader IT topics that
will increase understanding for healthcare professionals.
ADVANCED TOPICS (TRACK E): The Advanced Topics track will provide experienced internal audit
practitioners’ ideas on how to lead their organizations in the healthcare reform environment, keep
ahead of emerging risks, enhance governance, integrate technology, develop talent and enhance the
perceived value of the internal audit and compliance functions with leadership and the board of
directors.
REVENUE CYCLE/HEALTH PLAN (TRACK F): The Revenue Cycle / Health Plan track includes both
Revenue Cycle and Health Plan-specific topics of interest that will benefit every internal audit
professional's understanding of key business and process cycles.
Volunteer as an AHIA Conference Session Moderator
Volunteering to be an AHIA session moderator is a great way to network with your peers and further support
the organization. Session moderators serve a valuable purpose by welcoming the audience and presenter(s),
introducing the speaker(s), providing CPE sign-in instructions and reporting technical difficulties to the
registration desk. A moderator can influence the energy in the room in how he or she introduces the speaker
and the topic, welcomes the audience warmly, answers questions that may arise and makes sure the session
starts smoothly and ends on time. If you would like to be a session moderator for the 2016 Conference,
please call (888) 275-2442, ext. 6115 or email jsalas@kellencompany.com.

8:00 am – 12:00 pm EHR Auditor User Group Workshop – Epic Focus
TICKETED EVENT - $99 early/$199 after August 1, 2016– Limited to 50 individuals
Developing a robust and effective compliance program is dependent upon many factors. The
most significant road block in many organizations is the ability to conduct an efficient and
effective risk assessment that lends itself to a manageable set of action items. Utilizing data
analytics to perform risk assessments and audit entire patient populations can propel a
compliance program to the desired level of operational effectiveness without adding significant
human resources. With shrinking budgets and increasing amount of regulatory scrutiny and
subsequent vast number of compliance target areas, organizations can’t afford not to expand
their data analytic utilization.
Implementing robust data analytics will give you the ability to identify and segment both
compliance risk and revenue opportunities as well as ensure organizational effectiveness that
would otherwise be impossible to achieve.
Presented by: Brad Karn, Dieu Tran and Milissa Smith, Mercy Health
Prerequisite: Must currently be an Epic user with knowledge of the systems and/or have completed some
system audits.

Third Party Risk Management – Beyond the Business Associate Agreement
Providers and other healthcare organization are very familiar with the Business Associate
Agreement required since the inception of HIPAA for business partners who may have access to
or process PHI. However, this agreement only addresses one very small aspect of third party risk.
6
AHIA 35TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: SEPTEMBER 11-14
2016
There is a large universe of third party risks that need to be considered to help ensure your
organization is informed of potential exposure. These risks include third party performance
against established service levels, compliance with contractual terms, laws and regulations,
ongoing viability of key suppliers, and broader information security risks beyond unauthorized
access to or disclosure of PHI, to name a few. During this session, we will provide an overview of
the third party management lifecycle, the prevailing third party risks facing most organizations,
the tenants of an effective third party risk management program, and the role Internal Audit
should play in third party risk management.

Closing Remarks and Keynote Presentation: Finding the First Domino
– The Keys to Root Cause
Special Presentation by Robert Mainardi
The biggest challenge facing auditors today is identifying the source of
why a discrepancy was noted during testing. While this may appear to be a
simple process of asking the business owner why, it is so much more
complicated. This session will provide the approach to getting to root
cause.
