Mechanical design
Three-phase motor with squirrel cage rotor
Owing to their low profile the strong and
aesthetically designed flat motors greatly
reduce the cutting depth loss. The material
of the bearing shields and housing in the
individual type series are different and are
described separately in the following
performance tables.
The bearings of the shaft consist of sufficient dimensioned deep groove ball bearings. The drive end bearing is a fixed
bear-ing, the ventilator end one is an unfixed bearing. The bearings are to be regarded for normal installation conditions as
dust-proof. Because of their greasing for
lifetime the motor of series KN 50, KN 60
and KN 70 are free of maintenance and
greatly easy to operate.
On using these motors for cutting of plastics
and metal the bearings are especially
endangered by dust and chips. For these
operating conditions the bearings can be
provided additionally, on request, with
labyrinth seals on the both end shields.
This is already arranged as a regular
feature for the sizes KN / KC 70..., K 11...,
K 14..., K 16..., and K 20.
The connection of terminal box are normally situated on the right on viewing on
the shaft end, however, they can also be
installed, on special request, on the lefthand side. The entries for cables can be
rotated by 90° together with the terminal
box, if required.
Flat motors for stone working are listed
separately in section C.
Type of protection IP 55 on request.
Electrical design
The motors are designed according to
DIN EN 60034-1 / VDE 0530 part 1 rules.
High quality insulating material are used
for insulation. The impregnation is effected
according to the latest technology of vacuum processing. The thermal capacity is
conform to insulation class "F". On request
the motors can also be supplied with insulation for tropical conditions.
A power reduction of these motors will
result if those are installed at coolant
temperatures higher than 40°C (104°F) or
at heights exceeding 1,000 m (3,280 ft)
above main sea level.
All motors can be designed for different
voltages and frequencies. For those special applications it is recommended to
enquire, especially, if it is necessary to
meet connection regulations valid abroad.
Most types are available in CSA design
(file no. L.R. 16 865).
B
26
Depending on type the motors will develop
pull-out torques of approximately 250 to
350 % of the nominal torque. Therefore,
the motors provide temporary, strong overload capacity and are designed especially
for rough sawing works.
On short period utilisation of these power
peaks it is recommended to dimension the
protection fuses and the supply cables
according to the higher currents met in
these cases. Please inquiry in such cases.

Three-Phase Flat Motors With Brake
Mechanical design
Three-phase motor with squirrel cage rotor
Integrated electromechanical brake cooled
by the mounted ventilator of the motor
Switching on the motor the brake is also
supplied with current. Its strong
electromagnet lifts the brake plates and
releases the motor for running.
When switching off the motor the strong
springs existing in the brake give a high
brake pressure on the friction discs and
bring the motor to a standstill.
This is also valid in case of power failure
as a safety brake is used here.
Electrical design of the
motor
As described on page 26
Electrical design of the
brake
Connecting voltage: 230 V or 400 V onephase AC (alternating current). The electromagnet is designed for DC (direct current) and is fed by a rectifier which is positioned in the terminal box together with the
terminals of motor and brake.
One-phase alternating current is necessary for the feeding. Normally, this current
is to be tapped off parallel from the motor
terminal board in order to contain the
same circuit of motor and brake and therefore automatic interaction. When starting
the motor via Y/∆-connection the current
supply of the brake has to be guaranteed
also when switching protectively to avoid
a particular status without voltage.
If this is, however, not possible as the voltage of the motor deviates too much from
the rated voltage of the brake or if a variable voltage is used for speed regulation a
separate power supply is necessary for
the brake. In this case the user has to provide synchronous connection status
(motor/brake). Please ask for a connection
diagram.
Important note
When a motor with brake is used as a saw
arbor motor, the saw blade together with
the outside flange and nut would like to
run forward because of the rotative torque,
and the nut would be loosened from the
thread when braking the motor.
In this case the nut has to be secured
against unscrewing or a through key has
to be fitted which also secures the outside
saw blade flange against loosening. The
saw blade then has to indicate a bigger
boring diameter as the shaft diameter and
has to be positioned on a spacer or a corresponding flange surface.
Please consider that the brake is not suitable as a locking device for tool change
(saw blade change).

Note
Design of brake
● speed (rpm) at which the brake should
become active
● switching frequency (switches per hour)
● moments of external inertia (kgm2)
2) General validity
The electromechanical brake is to be
checked in each case of application.
Its stability, i. e. lifetime of the brake discs,
is a function of speed, switching frequency
and moments of inertia.
