and social activities. It offers you the best of both
worlds – a secure and self-contained community

THE GREEN
The Green
The Green is both a fantastic place to live
and a unique example of sustainable
building design. Buildings are arranged
as a small village, with rooms available
either in apartments with six en-suite
bedrooms or in 12-bedroom townhouses.
The Green is one of the most sustainable
developments of its kind in the world,
making the most of natural resources like
solar power and rainwater and costing
very little to heat and light.
The Green is a partnership between
the University of Bradford and Surtees
Management Co Ltd.
Surtees Management Co Ltd owns
the buildings; however, the University
and its Accommodation Team have
the responsibility to administer
the lettings, manage the tenancy
contracts and provide all the services
in The Green to students. The
University’s Accommodation Team
are highly experienced in providing
an excellent quality of service to our
customers – the students.

Spotlight on Living at The Green
Student Engagement Manager (Students’ Union)
Michael Allhouse gives you a flavour of life at
The Green and explains how a groundbreaking
community scheme is helping to bring students
even closer together.
“Because of where it is, right in the heart of the
campus, there is a lovely feel to the Green. It’s
super convenient for everything. Student Central
has got things going on night and day. There’s loads
of people coming and going all the time so there
really is a feeling of being in the thick of it.
You’re always bumping into people. If you have
a wander around in the evening there are always
some students sitting around having a chat. Right
in the centre of The Green is a pond and there is
a natural grass area in the centre of the complex.
There’s a space that students can use called The
Orchard, where there’s barbecues and various little
seating areas.
14
UG/PG
2016-2017
There is a real sense of community. There’s loads
going on all the time, lots of events. Tomorrow night
everybody is very excited about a Spanish party.
Last week we had a Thanksgiving party which was
a big hit.
We have this social community scheme called
the Green Association, which is run by the Green
Ambassadors. The idea is to organise a series of
events which are both fun and interesting, and
bring everyone together so that everybody living
at The Green feels part of the community. So far
this year we’ve had dodgeball, the cleanest kitchen
competition, a rap competition, and we’re now
planning a sports day and a cooking competition.
I don’t think it’s anything that any other student
accommodation has ever done – having a
designated student social programme. We did it last
year and it was quite successful, but this year we
have really stepped it up and there are going to be
lots more events.”

Deciding where to live when you come to university is
one of the most important decisions you will make. If
living in University-managed/owned halls is not for
you, then we advise you to search for accommodation
through Unipol Student Homes and select a property
which is part of the Unipol Code.
UNIPOL Coded Landlords are those who have
declared that ALL their properties meet the required
standards laid down in the Code - an accreditation
scheme for student accommodation.
Unipol Student Homes
Unipol is a unique organisation - a
charity, established in 1975, to help
students find the best housing
they can, to drive up standards
and be a beacon of good practice
for other housing suppliers.
The University works closely
with Unipol to provide students
with a private accommodation
service that is transparent and
easy to use. Many second- and
third-year students use Unipol to
find accommodation after their
first year in University-owned/
managed halls.
UNIPOL DOES SEVERAL THINGS:
Operates an easy to use
website featuring an
excellent range of student
accommodation which includes
private landlords with houses
and apartments, small and
large developments and owner
occupier options, where you
can share with the owner
Operates the Unipol Code
which accredits accommodation
to ensure they are well
managed, safe and secure
Provides housing advice on a
whole range of issues
Unipol Codes
accredit almost
5,000
bed spaces in shared
houses and larger
developments in Bradford
