Grade 11 Final exams 2016 Please see below the final exam schedule for this year, as well as general information regarding exams. Please review this information with your child. Exams will be held for grade 11 from May 31June 3. The purpose of administering final exams is to provide students with ● an opportunity to demonstrate important subjectspecific knowledge, skills and understandings that they have been working to develop throughout the year; ● an opportunity to develop their revision and examtaking skills (approaches to learning); ● the experience of taking a series of subjectspecific assessments under exam conditions in order to prepare them for future external exams (IB Diploma, College/University exams, etc.); ● the experience of preparing for a number of major examinations within a relatively compact examination session. Students’ course and homeroom teachers will be working with them over the coming weeks to prepare them for these exams. As part of this preparation, students will be advised of the following general procedures and regulations: Exam guidelines for students Exam schedule and breaks ● Students should know the date, time and location of their exam. ● Students in grade 11 are only required to be at school when they have a scheduled exam. If a student does not have an exam, they may be working at school with a specific teacher by prior arrangement. Students may not use the campus for leisure activities during the school day on exam days. ● Between exams students may gather in the courtyard and by the canteen to socialize and relax. If they wish to study quietly they may use the library. At all times they should be reminded that classes for students in grades 68 will still be in session, and conduct themselves accordingly. ● Students will need to remain in the exam rooms for the duration of the exam, unless otherwise instructed by the invigilator. Exam attendance ● If a student is late to an exam, they must present an admitlate slip that can be obtained from the office. Students who arrive late will not be given extra time. ● If a student is absent for an exam, the school will require parental confirmation that the student is unfit to attend school and the exam. Students who miss an exam for a legitimate reason will be allowed to makeup the exam at a time that is mutually convenient. Students who miss an exam may not automatically receive an end of semester grade for the course. Conduct within the exam room ● At all times, students should observe silence in the exam room. ● Each exam block includes a 5 minute reading period, during this reading period, students are not allowed to mark their exam papers in any fashion. ● Students should write their responses in blue or black ink only. ● Pencil may only be used for graphs, diagrams and charts. ● White out or liquid paper is not allowed. ● If a student makes a mistake, they should draw a line through the work they do not wish to be marked. ● Gel pens/highlighting pens can only be used to highlight questions or other information on an examination paper; they must not be used as part of a student’s answer to any question. ● Students are not allowed to leave the examination room during the first hour or during the last 15 minutes of an examination. Examination materials ● Examination stationery (pens, pencils, eraser, geometry instruments and a ruler) should be brought into the exam room in a clear plastic bag. ● Students may bring an approved electronic calculator for exams, such as Mathematics, in which one is needed. Teachers will advise students well ahead of the exam of the need for a calculator ● Under no circumstances are students allowed to have unauthorized materials or devices in their possession in an examination room. Unauthorized materials include notes, mobile phones, iPods, other electronic devices. ● Other personal belongings (bags, backpacks) not required for the examination are not allowed. However, articles that a student may consider a “lucky charm” or similar may be placed on the student’s desk/table as long as they are unobtrusive and do not contain unauthorized materials. Personal items should be secured in lockers or other secure areas well before the exam. ● Students must not share stationery, dictionaries, calculators or other material during an examination. ● Drinking water is permitted. Food, refreshments, and drinks other than water are only permitted for those students with a medical condition, such as diabetes. ● A student with unauthorized material in an exam room may have their examination cancelled.
