COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a study of harmony. The study is made through listening and observation of the
literature. Lessons in application include activities in composition and analysis.
COURSE OBJECTIVE AND ASSESSMENT:
After completing MUSI 2312, students will know the principles that govern borrowed chords,
augmented sixth chords, altered dominants, modulation using enharmonic spellings, modulation to
distant keys, and larger forms such as sonata, theme and variations, and rondo. The study of partwriting and analysis will continue. Students will also receive an introduction to 20th century
techniques. Knowledge of these principles will be assessed by the final exam. 70% of the students
will score 70% or higher on the final exam

Homework will be due at the beginning of class and will not be accepted late.
Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class and will not be made up if missed. The
two lowest quiz grades will be dropped.
Exams will be given after each unit and will be made up only at my discretion.
Exam 1 will cover small and large forms and mode mixture.
Exam 2 will cover Neapolitan and augmented 6th chords.
The Midterm Exam will cover Mode mixture, Neapolitan and augmented 6th chords.
Exam 3 will cover enharmonic spelling, modulations and further elements of the harmonic
vocabulary.
Exam 4 will cover Vsub6, V+5, cto7, 9th, 11th, 13th, coloristic chord successions and simultaneities.
The Final exam will be comprehensive and will be given during finals week.
INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS:
The LIBRARY contains many compact discs and records in the Media Center on the second floor.
Music scores and books are located on the third floor in the M and ML sections.
WITHDRAWAL FROM CLASS:
Students who officially drop this course by the official withdrawal date will receive a "W."
Students should check with the counseling office for this date, the proper forms and procedures.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance will be taken for every class meeting. Regular and prompt class attendance is expected
of every student. A student’s absence means that the student is not able to participate in the class.
While it is the final responsibility of the student to drop a class that she/he is no longer attending,
instructors
1. must drop a student who has not physically attended a face-to-face class prior to the ORD.
Instructors must initiate ORD drops by the published deadlines.
2. cannot drop a student with an average of D/UD or better.
3. after following established division retention practices, may at their discretion drop
students without consultation with the student when absences exceed 20% of the
scheduled class meetings. For classes that include a separate laboratory, a student may be
dropped when absences exceed 20% of the laboratory meetings or 20% of the lecture
meetings.
4. must drop a student when absences exceed 40% of the scheduled class meetings unless
said excessive absences accrue after the 65% drop date.
5. cannot drop a student after 65% of class instruction has been completed.
The Vice President of Instruction can make exceptions to the above rules.
