Trucks moving oversize loads across a state highway system are required to have
certain safety banners and warning flags to alert other motorists. The regulations
pertaining to these moves are state to state mandated by their DOT. Although not
all states have the same regulations, they all accept the same formatting of banners. This allows us to produce one truck banner and one escort vehicle banner
that is legal in all 50 states.

Any commercial motor vehicle transporting a load which extends beyond the
sides by more than 4" (10.2 cm) or more than 4' (121.9 cm) beyond the rear
must have an OSL banner with letters 2" wide by 12" high on a yellow background attached to the front and back of the truck.
OVERSIZE LOAD BANNERS FOR LOADS OVER 12' WIDE
All movements by a truck with a load wider than 12' must be accompanied by at
least one escort vehicle displaying a 12" x 60" OSL banner on either the front and
rear of the vehicle or a mounted sign on the roof.

SAFETY WARNING FLAGS
Any commercial motor vehicle transporting a load which extends beyond the sides by
more than 4" (10.2 cm) or more than 4' (121.9 cm) beyond the rear must have each
corner of the load marked with red or orange fluorescent warning flags at least 18"
(45.7 cm) square.
All movements by a truck with a load wider than 12' must be accompanied by at least
one escort vehicle. Each escort vehicle is required to have a red or orange 18" x 18"
warning flag attached to each corner of the vehicle or one attached to each side of the
OSL sign if it is roof mounted.
ADDITIONAL STATE REQUIREMENTS
Six states (Washington, Oregon, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and
Minnesota) require a reflective OSL banner on trucks and escort vehicles if the move
is after sunset.
Arkansas requires the OSL banner to display the width of the load. Example: Oversize
16' Load. Deflecto offers OSL banners that are spaced to accept numerals between
"Oversize" and "Load" so only one OSL banner and number kit is needed to be legal in
Arkansas.
