HEALTH TESTING IN POODLES
To help ensure the future health of Poodles, responsible breeders screen
prospective Poodle parents with tests available for primary health issues
in our breed. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and the Canine
Health Information Center (CHIC) work with parent clubs like the Poodle
Club of America to establish screening criteria important for each breed.
The following are tests needed to receive a CHIC number for each Poodle
variety. Where noted, the PCA Foundation also recommends several
other DNA tests, some quite recently developed as researchers identify faulty genes that cause
disease. For more on health issues in Poodles, go to www.poodleclubofamerica.org/health.htm.
TOY POODLES
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) DNA test from an OFA approved laboratory
Eye Exam by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist (results registered with OFA or CERF)
Patellar Luxation: OFA Evaluation
MINIATURE POODLES
Same CHIC requirements as Toy Poodles with the addition of:
Hip Dysplasia: OFA, OVC or PennHIP Evaluation
The PCA Foundation also strongly recommends the new DNA test for Miniature Poodle
Dwarfism (www.projectdog.org). Preliminary research suggests that about 10 percent of Minis
carry the mutation that causes this disease and that it is not limited to a few bloodlines.
STANDARD POODLES
Hip Dysplasia: OFA, OVC or PennHIP Evaluation
Eye Exam by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist (results registered with OFA or CERF)
Health Elective (one of the following tests):
OFA Thyroid Evaluation from an approved laboratory
OFA Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) Evaluation from an approved dermatopathologist
For Standard Poodles, the PCA Foundation also strongly recommends the following tests
from an OFA-approved laboratory:
DNA Test for Neonatal Encephalopathy with Seizures (NEWS)
DNA Test for vonWillebrand’s Disease (vWD)

Note: A CHIC requirement across all participating breeds is that the dog must be permanently
identified via microchip or tattoo in order to qualify for a CHIC number.
