Troubleshooting with a Short Finder
9000318
1.
Remove the blown fuse from the fuse holder (2), leaving the battery connected.
2.
Connect the short nder (1).
3.
Close all switches (6) in series with the circuit being tested.
4.
Operate the short nder (1). This will pulse current into the circuit to create a magnetic eld (3) surrounding
the circuit wiring between the fuse and the short (4).
5.
Slowly move the short nder meter (7) along the circuit wiring beginning at the fuse block.
The short nder meter needle will move to show current pulses through interior body and trim.
6.
The location where the short nder meter needle stops moving (5), is the origin of the short. Examine the wiring
in that location for the short to ground.
7.
Repair the circuit as required, refer to the appropriate repair procedure.
Using Fused Jumper Wires
Important: A fused jumper may not protect solid state components from being damaged.
Important: Do not use a fuse with a higher rating than the fuse that protects the circuit being tested.
A jumper wire is an in-line fuse holder connected to a set of test leads. It includes small clamp connectors that
provide adaptation to most connectors without damage and is used to bypass a suspected faulty portion of a circuit
with a known good conductor. The in-line fuse holder should be tted with a fuse of the same rating that protects
the circuit being tested.
