Introduction Welcome to the all new Sealmaster catalogue of Weather Seals. We are delighted to introduce a new generation of products including patented SmartSeal technology. The SmartSeal range is the first to operate differently depending on the weather. These seals use valves to optimise performance by switching between air leakage and water drainage modes depending on the weather conditions. Other innovations include integral timber weather boards with seals tucked discretely out of sight. Hidden and simplified fittings make fitting easier and quicker. The SmartSeal range is also the first to introduce covered drainage troughs for better access and safety. The new products featured in this catalogue exceed British Standards because we believe their true value depends on the energy savings they deliver over the life time of the building. High performance delivers greater energy efficiency and a longer working life - making Sealmaster products the obvious choice for value long term. Sealmaster seals are manufactured to fine tolerances using the best materials available for each purpose. The aluminium carriers are heat treated for added strength before being anodised to the generous depth of 15 microns for added durability. The blade and bulb inserts are made of Neoprene (except the cushion insert in the Cyclone range which is EPDM). The timber weatherboard sections of our door threshold seals are available in softwood, redwood and English oak. We require all materials and components used in the manufacturing process to meet relevant British Standards. Great care is exercised by our manufacturing facility to ensure qualilty is rigorously controlled and the products are finished to the most exacting standards. Accessibility Sealmaster door threshold seals satisfy the requirements of the Building Regulations for England & Wales (Doc M) and the Housing Corporation's Guidance on New Build. Technical Support For free and informed advice on seals for both standard and unusual applications, please contact our Technical Services Department on Cambridge 01223 832851 during office hours. Strong winds create ‘pressure drops’ at doors and windows where the air pressure difference between inside and outside literally sucks water and cold air into the building or forces warm air to leak outside through any gaps and cracks in the door or window. Simpler designs of threshold seals (such as Cyclone, pages 13 - 15) create an effective barrier to the passage of air and water through doorways but once rain has dripped from the bottom of the door leaf or blown inside as the door is used, there is no means for it to escape. (at the expense of not draining water) or are obliged to strike a balance between performance on water-tightness and on air leakage. SmartSeals overcome the problem by switching the way they operate to give the best performance whatever the weather. Drain Trough Cover (from above). Neoprene blades wipe water into grooves & drain holes. For door thresholds particularly exposed to rainwater, Sealmaster developed the Watershed range (pages 18 - 20) which incorporates discrete troughs to collect dripping water and channels droplets back outside. The advantage of redirecting water back outside came at a small cost to the seal’s air leakage performance since air could leak back through the water outlets. SmartSeal technology (see pages 9 - 11) overcomes this by including a one-way valve. This allows the water to drain away whilst preventing cold air and or droplets from being sucked back through into the building. Drain Trough Outlet (from below). One-way valve lets water escape without air leaking back in. In heavy rain, SmartSeals collect surplus water and drain it back outside. When gusts of wind attempt to force air and water back through the drainage outlets, they close until the pressure of water inside the collection trough rises above the air pressure outside to reopen the outlets and enable water to drain away. We called it SmartSeal Technology because the products respond automatically to the weather conditions as they change at the threshold of each doorway. Surplus water droplets at the bottom of the door are wiped by the two elastomeric blades in the timber (or aluminium) weatherboard section of the seal through a semi-porous lid into the collection trough. The inclusion of a lid which allows the water through but keeps dirt out cuts the risk of tripping presented by a broad open channel and is easier for wheeled traffic to negotiate. The patented SmartSeal range is unique in combining the latest sealing technology with traditional timber weatherboards discretely. Until now, threshold seals have tended to be designed to perform best in air leakage tests 2 Ne w Development s We are delighted to introduce a new and more advanced range of weather seals for doors and windows. This is part of an intensive programme under way at Sealmaster to improve the performance and value of the products and services we offer. Here are just some of the more recent developments. New Ranges, New Features The new Smartseal range introduces three new features. The drainage channels are covered with a water permeable lid and the outlets are controlled with one-way valves for enhanced performance. The weather board section is available in aluminium (silver or gold anodised as standard) or in timber. Most of the new door threshold seals come with the option of an aluminium or integral timber weatherboard. New Weather Seal Test Facility On Stream With the installation of our new full sized rig, we can simulate extreme weather conditions for testing prototypes under development. We test well beyond the performance levels required by British Standards. The facility is easily adapted to develop products for unusual applications requiring the control of air leakage, smoke, gases, water etc. Antarctica – The Ultimate Challenge The British Antarctic Survey monitors the ozone layer from the South Pole – in the most hostile weather on the planet. Finding other products were not up to the task, BAS contacted Sealmaster for a solution to protect researchers and computers in the SHARE command caboose (left) from the elements. Design Council Selects Sealmaster (again) Four Sealmaster products were selected by the Design Council in 1999 as Millennium Products - to represent the most innovative in the UK. The four products mark key advances in the fire protection of buildings using intumescent technology. (In 1968, the CoID selected our range of weather seals for a Design Award.) British Council Showcases Sealmaster Abroad Of the 1,012 Milennium Products identified by the Design Council (see above) the British Council, the Design Council and the Conran Design Group together chose Sealmaster Fireface as one of the top 120 British products now being showcased at international venues. 3 Improving Access Designed from direct experience During his later years, our founder was confined to a wheelchair. He used the experience to redesign the range with low profile threshold sections, ramped for easy access and ribbed for extra grip. The design principles he introduced have been retained in the new range – ensuring that Sealmaster seals continue to improve rather than hinder access. Design Considerations Improving access to buildings goes beyond the use of low profile threshold sections, ramped at angles to suit easy navigation by wheeled and pedestrian traffic. Correctly specified and fitted Sealmaster seals at door stops, thresholds and on windows ensure low friction operation, thereby easing the operation of doors and windows. For doorsets where space is at a premium, the use of seals with integral weatherboards may narrow the door opening slightly. The problem can be overcome using the option in the Cyclone range for external doors which excludes a weatherboard. See pages 13 to 15. Brush Seals, Auto-Door Bottoms, Ramps etc. For a comprehensive choice of brush seals, automatic door bottoms, cills, access ramps and self-adhesive seals, please contact our Ventura Division on (01223) 837007 or see www.ventura.uk.com Regulations & Guidelines on Accsess All Sealmaster seals satisfy (or exceed) the standards for accessibility required by the Building Regulations for England and Wales (Approved Document M) and by the Housing Corporation’s Guidelines on New Build. 4 Design & Ma nuf acture Whether you need to control airflow in the Channel Tunnel, heat loss at the South Pole, build fire, smoke or blast resistance into your buildings or require products to be designed and produced for particularly challenging applications, Sealmaster has 40 years of experience in controlling the leakage of air, smoke, fire, noise, fumes, gases, water & particles through apertures at your disposal. Sealmaster has worked with the BBC to develop acoustic seals for its studio doors. With a wide range of aluminium profiles and elastomeric inserts to choose from, it is often possible to put non-standard combinations to novel use – for example to form a neat frame for Raymond Blanc’s shower (above, left) with seals built in. Usually we are able to advise without charge on feasibility and costs at the outset. Occasionally limited feasibility tests may be necessary to provide accurate guidance. For further assistance, please contact our Research and Development Department. Fitting Even though Sealmaster seals are designed to be easily fitted and come with simple, illustrated notes, we find a few which have been fitted incorrectly. In the case of weather seals, this is not just a waste of resources but could impede the use of doors and windows – at best, an undesirable outcome and at worst, a danger in the event of a fire. 5 Where fire doors or compartments must be protected with fire and smoke seals but these have been wrongly fitted, the risks to people could be very serious. For further advice, please contact our Sales Department. Technical Support Seals are assessed for air leakage and watertightness on the test rig.
