The Optelian FLEX Architecture includes solutions that operate from -40ºF/-40ºC to
150ºF/65ºC, including pluggable transceivers, transponders (including tunable transponders),
muxponders, and mux/demux/OADMs. This includes services from 100 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s, such as muxponding and add/drop of multiple GigE and OC-3/OC-12/OC-48 services on
10G WDM wavelengths. Optelian’s hardened operation in outside plant environments has been validated by our Tier 1 customers and can take on your most demanding environmental requirements.

Planners are pushing high-speed backhaul and services such as GigE and OC-48/OC-192 closer and closer to their end customers and access platforms. Increasingly, the best solution is to deploy packet optical transport equipment in outside plant, i.e. cabinets and huts that are not environmentally controlled. Until recently, planners were prevents from doing so because, for example, transceiver technology could not operate at a low enough bit error rate in extremely cold or hot environments. The issue is that most WDM and Carrier Ethernet solutions are only rated for operation from 23ºF/-5ºC to 130ºF/55ºC. This simply isn’t good enough to meet reliability and availability targets in areas with harsh climates, whether they be in northern climates (where there are many days per year where the temperature drops well below 23ºF/-5ºC) to desert climates (exceeding 130ºF/55ºC especially when combined in outside plant with other heat-dissipating equipment).

Along the network path, there may be locations that require service but do not justify a dedicated fiber connection. An outside plant enclosure can be set up to facilitate these locations but the service cards must meet industrial temperature requirements. The FLX-1610 is well suited for this based on its ADM-like capabilities to add/drop traffic to while limiting truck rolls, avoiding the commissioning of dedicated equipment, and enabling service provisioning in days rather than months. Two line interfaces and integrated cross-connect enable deployment as a 10G ring and allows for adding and dropping of services between any service card on the ring.
