TYPICAL WEEKLY HOMEWORK Students in third grade should be spending approximately 20-30 minutes a night on homework, plus 20 minutes of reading. If you find that it is taking your child longer, please contact me for suggestions to make sure that they are using their homework time effectively or are not struggling. Weekly Spelling Homework – This is where the students complete their spelling homework each week. On a “normal” week, spelling is assigned on Monday and due on Friday. Students will have three nights of spelling homework and one night of grammar, each week. Thursday students will receive a grammar assignment. Please have your child watch their planner to check for any irregularities in due dates. On Monday’s students will receive their assignment for the week. The suggested pattern for spelling homework is written in the planner; however, how it is completed is up to each family as it is sent home Monday and due Friday. Third graders will complete their homework in their Spelling Spiral and will cut apart their assignment each week to glue into the spiral. We completed the first week of school together, as an example. Weekly Reading Homework– There are two parts to weekly reading. NON-FICTION: Twice a week, students will receive a weekly reader that corresponds to 3rd grade content and reading standards. To infuse more non-fiction reading into students lives they are expected to read their newspaper and be prepared to answer a comprehension question in class the next day. FICTION: To continue practicing fiction reading, students are expected to log into Whooo’s Reading to track their reading minutes for any book of their choice. Students are expected to read 60 choice reading minutes a week and log their minutes by Saturday. They can log nightly or in one chunk each week. They must enter the book title and minutes read weekly. They are also expected to answer one “question” a week based on the book they read through the online website. Weekly Math Homework – Math homework is assigned nightly and due the following day. Each lesson builds on the previous days, so it is important that students are working daily to understand concepts. If your child is struggling with a math lesson, please write me a note on the top of the page, so that I can better understand and adjust the lessons each day to help the class. Typically, students have 5-10 minutes each day to work on their math homework IN CLASS, it is expected they still bring their work home to be checked each night. Multiplication and Division Homework: It is STRONGLY recommended that you build 10-15 minutes of computation practice into your nightly routine this year. The nightly practice will help your child’s fluency and memorization of multiplication and division facts. Other Homework – Other homework will be assigned as is necessary in class. Typically, these assignments are small and used as preparation for a lesson in class. Projects are based on Science or Social Studies standards and mirror content that we are learning in class. Students are encouraged to use anything we do in class to help them with project homework during the year.
