The sun is a source of well-being and has beneficial effects providing we don’t over use it.
Protection from the sun is as important for the eyes as it is for the skin - UV and blue light
are both dangerous and can cause irreparable damage.
Blue violet light can seriously damage the eyes and can be attributed to retinal diseases
including AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration)*. The eye has its own defence mechanism
against blue violet light but unfortunately it decreases as we get older: At 40 years old, we have
already lost 20% of our initial retinal melanin and at 65 years-old, it is around 50%.

What is Melanin?
Melanin is a natural
pigment which is found
throughout the human
body. It is the pigment
that gives brown hair and
eyes their colour, as well
as giving our skin the sun
tanned appearance. It is
the body’s natural defence
system against the harmful
effects of the sun.
Protection of the retina
To provide the eyes with
optimal protection against
the sun, Essilor has created
a sun lens which contains
synthetic melanin.
It acts in the same way as
natural melanin, just like
a shield against harmful
UV and blue light, which
means preserving the
retina’s health.

of mirrors, e-mirror UV
NEW
These new mirrors come in two densities,
38% LTF (Class 2) or 15% LTF (Class 3).
When applied to a class 3 tint, the result will
be a bright colour. When applied to a class 2
tint, the mirror will have a softer colour.
E-mirror UV is applied on top of a class 2 or 3 full tint,
either Brown1 or Grey2.

CE Regulations - What does this mean for you?
Opticians are required to give patients information and advice on the correct use, care and limitations of their lenses.
The information required is very specific and makes definite demands of opticians, particularly in terms of the restrictions
on use of lenses. Much of it is information that any optician would give patients as a matter of course, but under the
Directive, opticians are encouraged to do so systematically.
Usage restrictions
Sun protection
The Directive defines five
classes of sun protection,
each with indications for
appropriate use.
Driving
Lenses are deemed
unsuitable for driving if
light transmission is less
than 8% LTF, or if the tint
affects the perception
and recognition of traffic
lights. For night driving,
transmission should not
be less than 80% LTF.
UV protection
lens cleaning solution and
drying with a soft clean
cloth, and should advise
when solvents and
detergents should not
be used.
Lenses that leave distance
vision uncorrected
These are not suitable
for activities that require
distance vision and are not
recommended for driving.
This applies principally

give you the best possible glazing service, there may be instances based on the PDs and
prescription combination that we may not be able to glaze the lenses ordered into the
