Mounting instructions for Nos. 3 1/2, 4 and 5 Colonial Pivot Hinges Colonial Bronze Company www.colonialbronze.com Step 1: Determine location for pivot on thickness of door. Normally, we would position the pivot approximately 13/16” back from the face of the door on an 1-3/4” thick door. With a 3o to 3-1/2o back bevel, you will get a 3/16” reveal; a 4 to 4-1/2o back bevel would be required for an 1/8” reveal. Note that the farther forward to the face of the door you move the pivot, the greater the bevel has to be. Step 2: Route the top and bottom of the door to be installed to accommodate the pivot. Since the pivots are 1/4” thick, we route the pivots approximately 3/16” deep and leave 1/16” exposed to give the hinge more clearance for painting or other finishing. The pivots can be flushed mounted, but is a more stringent application. Step 3: Install a female pivot leaf in the route at the top of the door and a male pivot leaf in the bottom of the door. This will insure that the pins of both pivots will run in the same direction. Step 4: Route and install hinge in the header of the door. The leaf should be positioned at the same position in the header as it is in the door, viz: same dimensions all around. This will insure proper alignment and a true and plumb door. A full 1/4” or 3/16” route is acceptable, depending on user preference. Step 5: Slide door up so that female pivot accepts male pivot pin. The door will be kicked out slightly to allow for installation of the female bearing pivot into the floor. Step 6: Put other female (bearing) leaf into male leaf installed in bottom door. Slide door into plumb position. Check all reveals, then trace pivot on floor. Gently swing door open, making sure that female pivot aligned with pencil tracing. Realign if necessary. Step 7: Pre-drill two outside holes, leaving center hole free for final positioning. Install the two outside screws and check swing of door. Adjust if necessary, and install center screw. Mounting instructions for Nos. 6 Colonial Pivot Hinges Step 1: Determine location for pivot on thickness of door. Normally, we would position the pivot approximately 13/16” back (measured at the centerline of the pivot) from the face of the door on an 1-3/4” thick door. With a 3o to 31/2o back bevel, you will get a 3/16” reveal; a 4 to 4-1/2o back bevel would be required for an 1/8” reveal. Note that the farther forward to the face of the door you move the pivot, the greater the bevel has to be. Step 2: Route the top and bottom of the door to be installed to accommodate the pivot. Since the pivots are 3/8” thick, we route the pivots approximately 5/16” deep and leave 1/16” exposed to give the hinge more clearance for painting or other finishing. A full 3/8” or 5/16” route is acceptable, depending on user preference. Step 5: Slide door up so that female pivot accepts male pivot pin. The door will be kicked out slightly to allow for installation of the female bearing pivot into the floor. Step 6: Put other female (bearing) leaf into male leaf installed in bottom door.
