1 Scope
This specification details Eskom’s requirements for all a.c. and d.c. indicating instruments.
2 Normative references
The following documents shall be read in conjunction with this specification. However, in
cases of conflict, the provisions of this specification shall take precedence.
IEC 51-1: 1984, Direct acting indicating analogue electrical measuring-instruments and their
accessories. Part 1: Definitions and general requirements common to all parts.
IEC 51-2: 1984, Direct acting indication analogue electrical measuring-instruments and their
accessories. Part 2: special requirements for ammeters and voltmeters.
IEC 51-8: 1984, Direct acting indication analogue electrical measuring-instruments and their
accessories. Part 8: special requirements for accessories.
IEC 51-9: 1988, Direct acting indication analogue electrical measuring-instruments and their
accessories. Part 9: recommended tests methods.
DIN 43700, Measurement and control instruments for panel mounting.
DIN 43802-2: 1991, Line scales and pointers for indicating electrical measuring instruments;
general requirements.
DIN 43802-3: 1991, Line scales and pointers for indicting electrical measuring instruments;
designs and dimensions.
DIN 43802-4: 1991, Line scales and pointers for indication electrical measuring instruments;
scale graduation and numbering.
ESKASAAN7, Environmental requirements and tests for electronic measuring equipment.
3 Definitions
Not applicable
4 Requirements
4.1 General
4.1.1 Nothing in this specification shall lessen the contractor’s obligations detailed in any
other documents forming part of a contract.
4.2 Instruments
4.2.1 Indicating instruments are required for the continuous indication of electrical
quantities.
4.2.2 Indicating instruments will be mounted on various panels and mimic boards to be
supplied by Eskom.

4.2.3 Instruments shall be contained in dustproof cases.
4.2.4 The glass front of the instrument shall be resistant to electrostatic build up.
4.2.5 Instruments shall be provided with an accessible zero adjustment screw where
applicable.
4.2.6 The instrument movement and its integral mounted dial shall be easily removable from
the instrument case for maintenance purposes.
4.2.7 The dial shall be firmly secured.
4.2.8 The step input response of the instruments shall be critically damped.
4.2.9 The calibration shall not be affected by stray magnetic fields.
4.2.10 Where blank dials are required, they shall be supplied with a matt-white finish.
4.2.11 If scaled dials are required, scaling shall be in accordance with DIN 43 802 for
coarse scales.
4.2.12 The instrument shall be checked, calibrated and, if required, scaled by the
Engineering Department of the Distributor concerned.
4.3 Standard information
The following information shall be imprinted, in standard IEC symbols but positioned as
specified in DIN 43 802, on all instrument scales:

4.4 Drawings
Three copies of all manufacturer’s drawings shall be supplied. On approval, one complete
set of transparencies or microfilm of the drawings shall be supplied to Eskom.
4.5 Instruction manuals
Copies of spare parts lists and instruction manuals, in quanitities specified in schedule A, of
the enquiry document, in English giving sufficient calibrating details to enable Eskom staff to
maintain and check the instruments, shall be supplied before delivery of the equipment. One
additional set of the above shall be supplied with the equipment on delivery.
5 Tests

5.1 The instruments shall be type tested in accordance with the specification relevant to that
instrument type.
5.2 The manufacturer shall, at his works, perform routine tests.
5.3 Three copies of certificates, detailing the results of all type tests, shall be provided by
the manufacturer prior to delivery of the equipment.
