Communication unit MEg202.2
1/ CHARACTERISTICS
The communication unit GPRS MEg202.2 in its basic version provides remote transmission of states or state changes of binary inputs and commands through the GPRS
mobile operator network. Measured values are transmitted from connected measuring
devices through the serial communication line RS485. It implements the standardized
communication protocol according to ČSN EN 60870-5-104 and allows integration
of connected devices into the SCADA system, either directly or through concentrators.
The unit MEg202.2 includes a processor that communicates with connected devices,
optimizes and controls data transmission, allows preprocessing of data read from measuring devices, supervises connected devices and automatically transmits the data to a
host system in case of an event.
The unit MEg202.2 can be used only in the function of a GPRS communication converter on the serial bus RS485 when data sent via GPRS are forwarded in transparent mode to the programmed channel RS485 and data from RS485 are sent back via
GPRS.
The basic functional setting of the unit is configured by the manufacturer. The setting
can be changed using the program M202Param.

There is a circular coaxial connector GPRS-SMA(f) ø 6.4 mm on the panel of the unit
GPRS MEg202.2 to connect the antenna. For the communication unit MEg202.2,
indoor GSM 3 dB, 5 dB and 9 dB magnetic antennas can be used; or outdoor GSM
antenna YAGI 120 in areas with weak signals or intensive extraneous interferences.
The LED STAT indicates the internal state of the unit. Two alternating states are
distinguished. The first state relates to the GSM/GPRS network, the second one to
communication with the connected device. If everything is correct, the LED flashes
briefly once. If a communication error with the GSM/GPRS network occurred (the
module was not registered to the network, GPRS activation failed, error occurred
during data transmission), the LED flashes briefly twice in quick succession. If a
communication error with any of the connected devices occurred, the LED flashes
briefly thrice in quick succession.
5
Měřící Energetické Aparáty
For example, if the signal is very weak and the unit cannot be registered to the network (and the communication with the connected devices is correct), the flashing
will be as follows: 2× – 1× – 2× – 1×… Besides, if at least one of the connected devices
does not communicate, the flashing will be as follows: 2× – 3× – 2× – 3×…
If modification of communication interfaces is required or a problem is indicated, you
can find out more details using the service program M202Param after connecting the
USB service connector of the unit to the computer. Using this program, you can also
set the unit and perform service operations (e.g. detection of intensity and direction
of the GSM network signal).
Warning!
If the unit GPRS MEg202.2 is not used for intended purpose, the protection provided by the device can be reduced.
4/COMMUNICATION
4.1 Remote data transmission
The communication unit MEg202.2 provides transmission of data and events from
measuring devices and other devices connected to it. The data transmission is provided by TCP/IP protocol through GPRS mobile operator technologies. Cooperating
with a mobile operator, you can configure the unit so that it is a part of a private network of the customer, or the data can be transmitted via the public internet network.
The communication protocol of transport layer can be UDP or TCP. When using
TCP, the unit can operate both as a TCP client and a TCP server. You can select
an application protocol according to ČSN EN 60870-5-104; a proprietary protocol
optimized for transmitting large data amounts, but also a transparent mode allowing
direct communication with the connected device.
The communication unit allows you to make up to 4 IP communication channels,
i.e. allows simultaneous communication with up to four user applications. The unit
contains one SIM card, but it can make connection through up to 4 APNs (Access
Point Name) and have assigned up to 4 different IP addresses. This feature allows you
to configure the communication unit so that it e.g. transmits important operating
data and events, e.g. to the control station, important invoicing data to the sales
department server, while measurements required to monitor and evaluate long-term
parameters of the measurement points can be downloaded to the server of another
department, and service interventions and configuration of the unit are possible e.g.
from an external service organization.

Communication unit MEg202.2
4.2 Peripherals
Peripherals, i.e. external operated units can be connected via both digital inputs and
outputs (e.g. IZP1) and through one of two standard RS485 interfaces. Any devices can be operated directly in command mode when the communication unit
MEg202.2 reads digital inputs using commands, sets the output states, sends individual received commands for devices through a selected interface and sends individual
responses of the devices back through the communication GPRS channel. In transparent mode, the data received through the GPRS channel are transmitted to the
selected interface RS485, and possible responses of the units are sent back.
Besides the direct control, the unit MEg202.2 itself can operate some devices, capture data, perform data selection, react to events, etc. The activity for the devices has to
be specified in advance and the MEgA company has to program the corresponding
operation of the unit that is then included in the firmware of MEg202.2. For each
of the operated devices, also of the same type, some of parameters have to be userprogrammed that specify the device type, interface or input, onto which the device is
connected, e.g. device address etc. In total, the user structure of the communication
unit allows connection and operation of up to 16 devices. The structure of the operated devices is programmed using the program M202Param.
At present, the firmware MEg202.2 supports monitoring states of short-circuit current indicators e.g. IZP1 and ground faults and short-circuits indicators MEg61, and
sending messages to one or more communication GPRS channels in case of an event.
Through the USB/RS485 converter, it allows data transmission and control of universal monitors MEg40.
4.2.1 Operation of short-circuit current indicator IZP1
MEg202.2 has 5 digital inputs and therefore it allows you to operate max. 5 pieces of
short-circuit current indicators or other two-state data sources that must be provided
with a contact connected between the selected input of MEg202.2 and the common
terminal. The program MEg202.2 monitors all indicators in one-second intervals
and when the input state changes, it sends a message through the selected communication GPRS channel. The message is also sent when the power supply of MEg202.2
is interrupted and restored if the indicator is in a state different from the programmed
idle state. It can be configured so that the indicator states are always sent when the
power supply is restored.
The message is one bit of information with time (information object of type 30) according to ČSN EN 60870-5-104 where the address and number of the information
7
Měřící Energetické Aparáty
object distinguish the indicator sending the message. The message contains time and
instantaneous state of IZP1.
The indicator is reset by sending the message „simple command“, type 45.
Configuration structure of IZP1 is following:
Type – Internal code of IZP1 unit
Input – Input number, to which IZP1 is connected
Address – Serial number of IZP1
GPRS channel – Communication channels, to which messages shall be sent automatically
Idle state – Input state when IZP1 is not indicating
Reset output – Output to which IZP1 reset is connected
4.2.2 Operation of ground fault indicators MEg61
The devices MEg61 can be connected to any of the two interfaces RS485. The program sends a state query in second intervals for each of the programmed devices
MEg61 via the corresponding interface. After a response from MEg61, it evaluates
programmed bits and in case of a state change, it sends a message via the selected
communication GPRS channel. The message is one bit of information with time (information object of type 30) according to ČSN EN 60870-5-104 where the address
and number of the information object distinguish the MEg61 indicator sending the
message. The message contains time and instantaneous state.
The configuration structure of MEg61 is following:
Type – Internal code of MEg61
Port – Interface RS485
Address – Serial number of MEg61 that is used as communication address
GPRS channel – communication channels, to which messages shall be sent automatically
Idle state – State of MEg61 inputs
Input mask – Specification of state bits of MEg61, to which the program shall response.
8
Communication unit MEg202.2
4.2.3 Operation of the universal energy meter MEg40
The instruments MEg40 can be connected to any of the two channels CHAN1,
CHAN2 with the RS485 interface. MEg40 in the version with RS485 interface can
be connected directly, MEg40 in the version with USB and P202 protocol can be
connected through the USBhost / RS485 converter by the firm MEgA. The converter
shall be supplied by 12 V voltage of the corresponding channel CHAN1 or CHAN2
of MEg202.2.
The measured voltage, current, active and reactive power and power factor values can be read as information objects of type 13 (M_ME_NC_1) according to
ČSN EN 60870-5-104.
An integration deviation criterion can be programmed for each instrument MEg40.
In this case, MEg202.2 reads the measured data from MEg40 every second and
evaluates the deviation from the last sent value. If the (integrated) programmed deviation is achieved or the time interval from the last data sending is achieved, the
instantaneous measured values are sent automatically to the programmed GPRS
communication channels.
The configuration structure of MEg40 is following:
Type – internal code of the instrument MEg40
Port – Interface RS485
Address – Serial number of MEg40 serving as a communication address
GPRS channel – communication channels, to which measured values shall be sent automatically in case of deviation criterion
Voltage deviation – voltage deviation value in tenths of a percent
of the rated value
Current deviation – current deviation value in tenths of a percent
of the rated value
Interval – Time interval to send values if the programmed deviation is not achieved. Values from 1 to 127 are in seconds,
if the value > 128, the value = interval – 128 in minutes
Note: When the deviation or interval = 0, this deviation or interval is not evaluated.

4.2.4 Operation of the compact monitors MEg70
The monitors MEg70 can be connected to any interface RS485 CHAN1 or CHAN2
and can be supplied directly from the 12 V voltage of the corresponding channel.
3 pieces of MEg70 can be supplied from one channel. In case of a higher number of
MEg70, they must be supplied from an external power supply unit.
The measured voltage, current, active and reactive power and power factor values can be read as information objects of type 13 (M_ME_NC_1) according to
ČSN EN 60870-5-104.
For each monitor MEg70, an integration deviation criterion can be also programmed.
In this case, MEg202.2 reads the measured data every second and evaluates the deviation from the last sent value. If the (integrated) programmed deviation is achieved or
the time interval from the last data sending is achieved, the instantaneous measured
values are sent automatically to the programmed GPRS communication channels.
The configuration structure of MEg40 is following:
Type – internal code of the instrument MEg70
Port – Interface RS485
Address – Serial number of MEg70 serving as a communication address
GPRS channel – communication channels, to which measured values shall be sent automatically in case of deviation criterion
Voltage deviation – voltage deviation value in tenths of a percent
of the rated value
Current deviation – current deviation value in tenths of a percent
of the rated value
Interval – Time interval to send values if the programmed deviation is not achieved. Values from 1 to 127 are in seconds,
if the value > 128, the value = interval – 128 in minutes
Note: When the deviation or interval = 0, this deviation or interval is not evaluated.
5/ INSTALLATION
The unit MEg202.2 in Fig. 2 is intended for installation in areas protected against
water, on a DIN rail TC35 that is secured by means of two screws to the switchgear
panel. The supply line from the 12 V / 200 mA DC voltage supply is brought to the
terminals 9 and 10 of the unit MEg202.2; the negative pole of the supply is to be
10
Communication unit MEg202.2
connected to the terminal 9 and the positive pole to the terminal 10. The supply
terminal 9 of the unit is connected to the common terminal 20 of the input signals
IN1 – IN5. NO or NC contacts of external devices whose states are to be transmitted,
are connected to the inputs IN1 – IN5 on the terminals 19 – 15 of the MEg202.2
unit. The contacts of the cooperating devices are supplied with 12 V DC voltage of
the communication unit MEg202.2. Two output signals OUT1 and OUT2 on the
terminals 14 – 11 of the MEg202.2 unit implemented by means of galvanic isolated
switching relay contacts are used to control external devices, e.g. to reset them.
External devices with RS485 communication are connected to one of the channels
CHAN1 or CHAN2. For this purpose, the signals A and B on the terminals 3, 4
and 7, 8 are used. If communication circuits of external devices shall be supplied, e.g.
converter of protocols USB / RS485, to connect the universal monitor MEg40 with
communication USB2, galvanic isolated DC 12 V voltages with maximum consumption of 150 mA are available for the individual channels from circuits of the communication unit MEg202.2. These voltages are connected to terminals 1, 2 for CHAN1
and to terminals 5, 6 for CHAN2. Then one of the channels CHAN1 and CHAN2
can cooperate using the standardized protocol ČSN EN 60870-5-101 and the other
one using the proprietary communication protocol.
The power supply of the communication unit MEg202.2 is usually implemented by
an uninterruptible power supply unit, e.g. MEg106. You can use also a different uninterruptible or interruptible DC 12 V supply unit. However, an interruptible power
supply unit does not allow communication when the supply voltage is interrupted at
the place of communication. Fig. 3 shows a wiring example.
The omnidirectional whip indoor antenna with magnetic attachment is usually placed on a ferromagnetic base so that the antenna is in a vertical position. Screw the
connector of the coaxial antenna cable into the mating connector SMA(f) on the
panel of the MEg202.2 unit. As well, the cable of the outdoor YAGI antenna is to be
connected to the above circular GPRS connector. The outdoor antenna cable is 10 m
long. The YAGI antenna for outdoor installation is directional, and therefore it must
be directed to the nearest relay point of the used mobile operator network. This is allowed by the control program M202Param whose operation is specified in a separate
description. The self-adhesive tape antenna shall be installed also vertically.
The SIM card according to Fig. 2 is installed by the manufacturer after it is received
from the customer. If agreed with the manufacturer, the customer can set the unit
MEg202.2 for his own SIM card using the program M202Param.
