Wildwood Middle School Mrs. Donna Chapman Multi Media and the Magic of Electrons Grade 8 This course is part of the Project Lead the Way Gateway to Technology middle school program. It integrates math, science, technology and preengineering concepts and skills and is designed to help students develop and hone skills in these areas. Students will have a basic foundation for any PLTW courses they choose to take in high school or to purse engineering coursework in college. College credit is earned for some PLTW high school courses. What will I Learn? In a word, this class is all about INNOVATION (INVENTING AND IMPROVING)! You will apply your knowledge, expertise and use of technology while experimenting to solve problems and come up with solutions to basic everyday problems. Through hands-on projects, you will explore the science of electricity, the movement of atoms, circuit design, and sensing devices. Students acquire knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design and explore the impact of electricity on their everyday life. Projects include a DC Motor and wiring of breadboards. The final project will be the design, fabrication and testing of a maglev vehicle. You will explore the history of flight including space exploration. Hands-on projects will include the construction and testing of a White Wing Airplane, demonstrating flight techniques using a flight simulation program, designing a mission patch, and building and testing a bottle rocket. Using the design approach, you will complete drawings on a computer using a computer aided design software program similar to those used in engineering. The maglev vehicle will be designed on the CAD program. You will learn how to create basic animations using Flash software. Additionally we will be using digital cameras, computer, and other multi-media tools throughout the semester. Several projects will emphasize the teaming approach. You will utilize the strengths of each of your team members to accomplish the goals of your project.
