Moon Over Appalachia is a four-movement
suite for solo cello inspired by the folk music
of Appalachia, an enchanting musical
tradition of lyrical melodies, foot-tapping
rhythms, heart-wrenching lullabies, and above
all, the spirit of an American people and their
landscape.

With memorable melodies and colorful
interplay, American composer Oliver
Caplan’s (b. 1982) music expresses a deeply
felt romanticism. Mr. Caplan’s 2012 debut
album “Illuminations” is available on
iTunes and Amazon.com. His music has
been presented in over 85 public
performances in 11 states, including the
Bronx Arts Ensemble, Columbia University
Wind Ensemble, Nebraska Chamber
Players, and Juventas, among others.
Accolades include Veridian Symphony
Orchestra Composers Competition Winner
(2014), Somerville Arts Council Grants
(2014, 2013), Virginia Center for the
Creative Arts Fellowships (2013, 2011),
5th House Ensemble Young Composer
Competition Grand Prize (2010), and
ASCAP Plus Awards (2008-2014). Mr.
Caplan holds degrees from the Boston
Conservatory and Dartmouth College.
He currently resides in Massachusetts.

Hailed as a “superb cellist” and as
“sonorous and panoramic” in The Boston
Globe, David Russell maintains a vigorous
schedule both as soloist and as collaborator
in the U.S. and Europe. He was appointed
to the teaching faculty of Wellesley College
in 2005 and currently serves as Visiting
Assistant Professor. He is a busy performer
in the Boston area, serving as Principal
Cello of Opera Boston and making regular
appearances with such ensembles as Pro
Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the
New England String Ensemble, Cantata
Singers and Ensemble, and Emmanuel
Music. A strong advocate and performer of
new music, Mr. Russell has performed with
such ensembles as Boston Modern
Orchestra Project, Music on the Edge,
Dinosaur Annex, AUROS Group for New
Music, and the Fromm Foundation Players
at Harvard.
