Page 3 11/24/2014 EPICS in IEEE Overview EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) in IEEE – Organizes university, as well as high-school students to work on engineering-related projects for local area non-profit organizations. – Empowers IEEE Student Branches and IEEE Young Profesional groups to work with high school students on EPICS community servicerelated engineering projects Establishment of a relationship between the student branches in each of the participating Sections, a local high school (or schools), and nonprofit or humanitarian organizations in each venue. Focus on development – of devices and systems for the benefit of the target audiences of the non-profit community partners. Page 4 11/24/2014 EPICS in IEEE Progress Since 2009, 54 projects have received funding Involving over 224 volunteers with 440 University Students and 830 (242 female) pre-university students impacting thousands in communities around the world Technical solutions addressing – Human services (17 projects) – Access and abilities (18 projects) – Education and outreach (11 projects) – Environment (8 projects) 30 projects completed Papers presented at the 2011 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC) Page 5 11/24/2014 EPICS Project Categories EPICS and EPICS in IEEE projects fall under four defined humanitarian “categories.” These categories help students connect engineering skills to humanitarian issues that involve: – Access & Abilities – Education & Outreach – Environment – Human Services Page 6 11/24/2014 EPICS in IEEE Around the World # of Projects Argentina 3 Belgium 1 China 2 India 18 Kenya 2 Malaysia 2 Mexico 1 Namibia 1 Nigeria 1 Pakistan 1 Portugal 1 South Africa 6 Tunisia 1 Uganda 2 United States 7 Uruguay 2 Zambia 2 Zimbabwe 1 Total 54 Regions 1-6 Page 7 Region 7 11/24/2014 Region 8 Region 9 Region 10 Joint efforts involved in EPICS-in-IEEE projects Non-govt. or Non-profit Org. This will enable them to supplement or replace standard textbooks that are costly and/or out of date and provide inadequate coverage of new research on evolving trends and cutting edge technology. DTUs will include web-based material covering an array of subjects taught in Zambian Secondary Schools e.g. Mathematics, Science, Art and English etc. Page 18 11/24/2014 Environment: South Africa Air-quality microsensors for Earth Observations Conventional air-quality monitoring systems are limited to centralized sites Limited data for the estimation of air toxins obtained Air toxins to be monitored include O3, NO2, SO2, Pb, PM10 Page 19 11/24/2014 Air-quality microsensors for Earth Observations: Cont’d Construct a board‐level design, including a conventional off‐the‐shelf air‐quality sensor Replicate the boards, designatingsuch a board as a “wireless node” Board‐level development analogous to works done at Drexel complementary (“quick solution”) to the work done by the “partner” undergraduate final year student Page 20 11/24/2014 Human Services: Nigeria Intelligent Traffic Control System Design and implement an intelligent traffic control system using an Image processing approach. Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year. Feedback within 30 days. We are currently taking in applications For more information, please visit www.ieee.org/epics_high.html Page 26 11/24/2014 Project Budget EPICS in IEEE project grants range around $1,000 to $10,000 U.S. dollars. Any amount may be requested, but must be quantified or justified in the proposal’s budget break down. Budgets normally outline materials and supplies necessary to accomplish the goals of the project (such as prototypes, or software) Page 27 11/24/2014 Budget Example Consumables - Node construction "Ordinary" Air-Quality Sensors GSM transceiver Sensitive Si Chips/microsensors* PCB integration Software devt./licencing Stationery Project board/materials/banner & branding Transportation (dissemintation activities) Workshops (catering) Page 28 11/24/2014 US $ 7000 300 600 400 1000 9300 US $ Application form: Contact info Page 29 11/24/2014 Application form: NGO details Page 30 11/24/2014 Application form: High school collaborator Page 31 11/24/2014 Application form: Funds + Budget + Agreement Page 32 11/24/2014 Application form: project summary Page 33 11/24/2014 Questions Please contact us anytime: davoyedokun@ieee.org Page 34 maciejborowka@ieee.org 11/24/2014
