EPICS in IEEE Overview
EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) in IEEE
– Organizes university, as well as high-school students to work on
engineering-related projects for local area non-profit organizations.
– Empowers IEEE Student Branches and IEEE Young Profesional groups
to work with high school students on EPICS community servicerelated engineering projects
Establishment of a relationship between the student branches in each
of the participating Sections, a local high school (or schools), and nonprofit or humanitarian organizations in each venue.
Focus on development – of devices and systems for the benefit of the
target audiences of the non-profit community partners.

EPICS Project Categories
EPICS and EPICS in IEEE projects fall under four
defined humanitarian “categories.”
These categories help students connect
engineering skills to humanitarian issues that
involve:
– Access & Abilities
– Education & Outreach
– Environment
– Human Services

Education and Outreach: Zambia
Put images, sound files and video clips, at the
finger tips of students and teachers.
This will enable them to supplement or replace
standard textbooks that are costly and/or out of
date and provide inadequate coverage of new
research on evolving trends and cutting edge
technology.
DTUs will include web-based material covering an
array of subjects taught in Zambian Secondary
Schools e.g. Mathematics, Science, Art and
English etc.

Environment: South Africa
Air-quality microsensors for Earth Observations
Conventional air-quality monitoring systems are
limited to centralized sites
Limited data for the estimation
of air toxins obtained
Air toxins to be monitored
include O3, NO2, SO2, Pb, PM10

Air-quality microsensors for Earth
Observations: Cont’d
Construct a board‐level design,
including a conventional
off‐the‐shelf air‐quality sensor
Replicate the boards,
designatingsuch a board
as a “wireless node”
Board‐level development analogous to works
done at Drexel complementary (“quick solution”)
to the work done by the “partner” undergraduate
final year student

Project Budget
EPICS in IEEE project grants range around
$1,000 to $10,000 U.S. dollars.
Any amount may be requested, but must be
quantified or justified in the proposal’s budget
break down.
Budgets normally outline materials and supplies
necessary to accomplish the goals of the project
(such as prototypes, or software)
