ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

200.E2

Highlighting the diversity and interconnectedness of living organisms and their importance in the ecosystem, Environmental Science is a two-year pre-university profile in the Science Program with an ecology tailored curriculum. Importantly, it provides students with a DEC in Science that qualifies them to apply to any university Science program.

The Environmental Science profile in Science is for students who are strong in science subjects, but who also have a particular affinity for environmental matters from a scientific perspective. Students who enter this profile generally wish to make a valuable contribution as a scientist in the health of the planet.

The profile covers the same science pre-requisites for university entrance as other Science profiles (Pure and Applied and Health Science) and focuses on ecology, outdoor labs and stimulating field trips.

What is special about the Environmental Science profile?

• The first Biology course (General Biology I) offers both ecology-based lectures and laboratory exercises focused on ecological interactions; many of these laboratory sessions occur outside a traditional lab environment;

• Field trips to other venues provide a well-rounded view of ecological and environmental diversity;

• Students complete a special project on an Environmental

Science topic;

• The first two Chemistry courses in the profile (General Chemistry and Chemistry of Solutions) focus on environmental applications;

• Students attend a seminar series featuring speakers at the cutting-edge of many disciplines touching upon Environmental Science;

• A new and exciting Environmental Biology course offers intensive laboratory sessions occurring at a Science field station;

• Certain specially-designed courses within the profile allow students to acquire a problem-based approach to learning.

• In conjunction with the Environmental Biology course, an intensive Physical Education course has been developed and takes place at the same field station;

Admission Requirements

Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES) , including

• Secondary V Language of Instruction

• Secondary V Second Language

• Secondary IV Science

• Secondary IV Mathematics

• Secondary IV History or academic background judged equivalent to the DES.

Students with a DES missing any of the above subjects may be admitted, space permitting, but may be required to complete remedial courses.

Specific ministerial admission requirements*

Sec V Mathematics - Technical & Scientific option or

Science option 564-506 or 565-506

Sec V Chemistry 551-504

Sec V Physics 553-504

*For students graduating before June 2010 or from an Adult

Education Centre, the pre-requisites are Mathematics 536,

Chemistry 534, and Physics 534.

Conditional admission is based on Secondary IV final and

Secondary V mid-term grades. Final admission into the Science

Program is contingent on obtaining a DES which includes the pre-requisite courses with appropriate grades.

The number of students that Dawson College can accept into the

Science Program is limited; therefore students with the highest grades in high school have a better chance of being admitted.

The application deadline is March 1. This program accepts applications only for the Fall semester.
