10 Benefits of Reseeding
with a MVF Premier Ley
Welcome to the 2012 MVF Premier
Leys grass seed catalogue, in which
you will find our excellent range of
both conventional and organic grass
seed leys for the coming season.
Maximising the value of home grown
forage is highly important in these
volatile times, when bought in feed
can be very costly. Our Premier Leys
are well supported by our suppliers
through research done at IBERS in
Aberystwyth and DARD in Northern
Ireland to improve production from
grass and clover mixtures. MVF
as levy payers support the NIAB
recommended list from which we
are able to select varieties for their
higher yields, palatability and disease
resistance.
Conventional Premier Leys
We are facing a very challenging time
as prices paid to farmers for grass
seed production are rising, owing to
the high price of cereals and it is one
of the most weather sensitive crops to
grow. Prices will remain firm until there
are more stocks around but essentially
reseeding is an extremely good
investment.
The Forage for Profit initiative
was set up by MVF in 2009 to
encourage and support farmers to
produce better quality and higher
quantities of Forage.
5
For selection of the leys you require
turn to page 12 for a conventional ley
and page 37 for an organic ley. All MVF
Premier Leys are offered in one acre
packs. This can be delivered direct to
farm or collected from an MVF Branch
or SCATS Countrystores.

Establishing a New Ley
Ploughing and working down prior
to re-seeding is the conventional
approach with advantages where
ground is rutted, badly poached
or uneven. It has the disadvantage
of being the most expensive by
far. It also creates a weed problem
requiring treatment and has the
longest time interval before the new
ley can be grazed. Under sowing a
spring cereal crop or arable silage
mix is an excellent and secure way of
establishing a new ley, giving clean
grazing on firm ground after harvest.
A cheaper alternative which allows
earlier grazing and firm ground which
reduces the risk of poaching includes
overseeding or slot seeding on a
tightly grazed ley with specialist grass
seeding machines.
Conventional Premier Leys
This requires grazing every 4 – 5
weeks to maintain the sward at
4 – 5” until the new seeds are fully
established. Attention to detail before
drilling will ensure the best possible
establishment. Timeliness and care
taken at this stage will prove a sound
investment and result in a crop which
will be high yielding, weed free and as
long lasting as the species selected.
Sowing can take place from early
spring, once the soil is warm and
has sufficient moisture, until October
(weather permitting). Mixtures with
clover should be sown before the end
of August, for best establishment.
10 Point Plan
7
for establishing a new ley
1.
2.
3.
Always roll the seed bed to avoid
sowing too deep and to aid faster
seedling development. Broadcast or
drill seed to a depth of ½” (13mm) to
maximise seedling growth. Harrow
seed in lightly and follow up with a
Cambridge roller to consolidate the
seed bed. Apply 40 units N/acre when
the grass has two leaves and clover
has its first trifoliate leaf.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Soil test – correct pH and
nutrient deficiencies. Phosphate
is particularly important for
establishment
Burn off old sward with Roundup
(Glyphosate)
Cultivate to create a fine, firm
seedbed
Ideally sow into warm, moist soil
Broadcast or drill grass seed
(cross drill)
Drill no deeper than 15mm
Cambridge roll
Monitor Frit Fly, Leatherjacket and
Wireworm. Treat at first signs of
damage
Slug pellets advisable in wet
seasons
10. Control broad leaved weeds e.g.
Chickweed before they take over
the reseed either by light sheep
grazing or suitable weedkillers
Direct Drilling Grass After Using Glyphosate (Roundup/Clinic Ace)
Monitor the establishing sward for
signs of pest damage. Leatherjackets
and slugs can be a problem in both the
spring and autumn. Frit Fly damage
can occur in the summer or autumn.
There are two situations where grass
may be direct drilled:
Early management is very important
to encourage rapid ground cover as
soon as possible. Grazing is preferable
to cutting in the first instance, ideally
using sheep or young stock.
It is essential to remove, or graze
thoroughly surface trash from 5
days after spraying. Grass and
Clover may be direct drilled once
all trash is cleared.
Reseeding is a good time to correct
soil pH, by applying Physiolith (see
pages 8 and 9).
9.
a) Following a 1 – 2 year old ley –
without surface mat of old grass.
b) Following a long ley/permanent
pasture - with some surface mat of
old grass.
Spray the ley in the autumn. Delay
direct drilling until the following
spring and give the surface mat
time to decompose. Removal
followed by harrowing to break
the soil surface to the depth of
decaying roots and rhizomes will
aerate the soil and speed the
breakdown of the organic mat and
reduce the risk of toxins being
present when grass seeds are
drilled in the spring.

Optimising Production
Optimising Production
with sound nutrition
with sound nutrition (continued)
Your new ley is an investment which, if
looked after, will provide your animals
with quality feed for years to come, so
ensuring it has the best start will pay
dividends in the long run.
Efficient soil nutrition is important
for establishing your sward. It will
also help maximise its output (both
yield and quality) and increase its
productive life.
The amount and timing of fertiliser
applications are key factors together
with your choice of fertiliser to
complement your soil reserves and
Slurry or FYM applications.
Producing More Meat or Milk
From Forage
We look to achieve this with the
Nutribalancer™ program. This
combines the technically advanced
specific fertilisers in the range with
traditional products, blends and
straights.
We are able to offer excellent advice
on all areas of forage and livestock
production. This is provided through
a team of local MV Forage Specialists
supported by our own research,
product development, and our local
fertiliser manufacturing facility at
Teignmouth in Devon.
The Importance of pH
Correction
Analysis of your soil pH is crucial to
achieving the best return from your
fertiliser inputs and to getting a new
ley established. Most crops grow best
at a pH of 6 - 6.5.
Conventional Premier Leys
Physiolith soil conditioner is
recommended for the rapid correction
of soil surface pH and contains a
rooting complex Amino Purine to aid
germination and root development. We
can also supply bulk Agricultural Lime.
Regular soil nutrient testing, at
least once every four years, is
recommended to ensure levels
of Phosphate, Potash, Calcium,
Magnesium and trace elements are
satisfactory. Particular attention
should be paid to soil phosphate
levels. Phosphate is vital for root
development and energy production
within the ley. Clovers are particularly
sensitive to phosphate reserves.
9
To ensure good agricultural practice,
maximising yield and crop potential, it
is advisable to do a soil analysis. Mole
Valley Forage Services can arrange
both pH testing or full soil nutrient
analysis. Samples are analysed by an
independent ISO registered laboratory
to ensure accurate and reliable
results. Nutribalancer™ fertiliser plans
can then be formulated from this
information.

It is vital to remember that cultivations
to establish a new ley will often
bring thousands of weed seeds to
the surface, which, unchecked, can
smother much of the newly sown
grasses.
Successful weed and pest control

Long Term, Cutting and Grazing
Long Term, Grazing
• Designed to produce a dense
productive ley without clover. Can
be used for cutting or grazing.
• First cut silage of 75D, cut around
10th - 12th May.
• The newly established ley can be
sprayed at establishment with more
effective and lower cost herbicides
to control Chickweed and Seedling
Docks, before they get established
in the sward.
• 100% ryegrass content will give
the maximum response to Nitrogen
applications. For either quick
rotational grazing systems or to
maximise silage production.
• The mixture is extremely palatable
with the blend of white clover. It is
essential not to under graze as the
cocksfoot will become fibrous and
tough.
• Cocksfoot produces long fibrous
roots and along with meadow
fescue are drought tolerant.
• Suitable for beef and sheep with a
good dense ground cover.
• Cocksfoot is early to start in the
spring and is very rapid in its
recovery after defoliation.
• Herb mixtures can be added to
the ley as they also are drought
resistant, with deep roots and add
minerals to the grazing animal.

Low Input Pasture
Renovation Mixes
Long Term, Cutting and Grazing
Old pasture and leys that have
become thin in the bottom can be
rejuvenated by either broadcasting
seed onto them or by slot seeding.
Ideal ground conditions are important;
use a chain harrow with reasonable
spikes to get a tilth, broadcast the
seed and then either roll or turn out
stock to tread in.
Do not apply any Nitrogen until the
new grasses are well established.
Delivery direct to farm packs: 10 kgs
• A ley designed for beef and
sheep farmers, who are looking to
maximise production from lower
inputs.
• Proven mixture in low input trials
(DARD2003-06).
• Fescues and cocksfoot are included
because they are deep rooted
and able to survive dry and wet
conditions.
• The mixture of species has been
selected to offer opportunities for
cutting and grazing.
• Good mid-season growth is gained
from the mixture of chosen grasses.
• Barolex tall fescue, is a highly
palatable variety, with forage that
contains 15% more protein than
perennial ryegrass.
• This range of grasses will thrive with
lower inputs of artificial Nitrogen,
offers a sustainable farming solution
and will last for many years.

Horse Haylage
White Clover
Medium Term, to be cut for
fodder production
This is used in most long term grazing
leys at between 0.75 to 1.0 kg/acre
inclusion rate. For overseeding 1.0kg/
acre is recommended to boost nutrient
value of the sward and fix Nitrogen.
Up to 100 units/acre of Nitrogen are
fixed by a sward with 20 to 30% clover
composition.
• Produces haylage which is an ideal
source of protein and energy.
• It is ideal for barn drying or high dry
matter haylage or hay.
• The mixture is designed to produce
fodder that is an excellent source of
fibre.
• The inclusion of timothy and
meadow fescue gives that special
‘nose’ to the finished haylage.
• The sward can be grazed prior to or
following a fodder crop
Varieties are categorised by leaf size.
Small leaf varieties are most persistent
under tight sheep grazing, whilst the
large leaf varieties are most persistent
under cattle grazing or silage
management.
31
• To increase the palatability of the
sward and consequently animal
performance.
• To fix Nitrogen.
• To supply additional protein and
minerals to the animal.
• To give extra production during dry
spells.
• To maintain the quality of the sward.
• Blends combine complementary
characteristics and offer greater
stability of yield than single varieties
within the mixture.

Red Clover
Italian Ryegrass Blend
A much larger plant than white clover,
used in short and medium term leys
and fertility building swards.
A highly productive, rapidly
establishing sward, which is versatile
enough to be grazed, cut or catch
cropped over the short term. With fast
establishment and rapid production,
it can achieve up to four silage cuts
with over-winter grazing, or be used
as a catch crop sown after maize.
Responds positively to high fertiliser
levels.
There is renewed interest in the
species as a source of home produced
protein and free fixing of Nitrogen.
• High protein level throughout the
growing season.
• Very high yields for 2-3 years.
• Improves soil structure and fertility.
• Large root system makes it drought
resistant.
Warning: It can effect fertility of ewes
due to oestregen production if grazed
6 weeks prior to tupping.

Puna ll is a New Zealand bred
broad-leaved perennial forage herb
of high nutritional quality, producing
high yields, from spring to late
autumn. It has a large tap root giving
excellent drought Tollerance and can
be sown into grass clover mixtures
or on its own with clover. The high
mineral content appears to have
some anthelmintic benefits for grazing
animals.
Sowing
Spring sowings are recommended,
although early autumn sowing is
possible providing it has established
before winter dormancy. Suggested
sowing rates would be for grasses and
clovers 0.25 - 0.5 kgs per acre, or a
pure Puna ll plus clover stand at 5.5
kgs per acre.
Puna ll has a very small, light seed
and therefore should not be sown
deeper than 10mm. Seed may be
drilled or broadcast and has been
successfully direct drilled under
favourable conditions; slug bait should
be used to enhance establishment.
Chicory prefers well drained soils and
moderate to high soil fertility. The crop
requires similar N, P and K levels as
grass at establishment stage. Allowing
Puna ll to flower once in late autmun
can enhance persistency through
the build up of root reserves. In New
Zealand, Puna ll has been shown to
persist from 2 - 4 years, depending on
management, soil type and climate.
Grazing Management
Graze the crop rotationally in the
sowing and keep on top of the crop
to prevent flowering. Hard grazing,
particularly after flowering or damage
to the crown in wet conditions will
effect production and persistance.
Early studies of lamb growth rates on
pure stands of Puna ll plus clover have
shown between 300 - 400g daily live
weight gain.

Our Rumigan Premier Leys have
been carefully selected to provide
a combination of palatability, yield
and disease resistance to provide
improved production for both milk and
meat from grass clover mixes.
This year there should be more stocks
of good organic varieties around
including hybrids. However, there will
be a limited choice of clover varieties
and therefore deregation maybe
obtained for agronomic reasons if
there is no suitable organic seed
available.
If any of our organic leys are not
suitable for your requirements, we are
able to make up special mixes to suit.
We are totally committed to producing

Conservation and Amenity Mixtures
Mixtures designed for golf and sports
turf. Closed seasons are becoming
even shorter whilst at the same time
levels of play are constantly increasing.
Our range of Pro-Sport mixtures
have been formulated to meet the
requirements of today’s groundsmen
and greenkeepers.
Whilst we have standard mixtures for
most situations, we are always able to
help put together mixtures to your own
specification.
5
61
There is an increasing demand for
conservation mixtures suitable for
amenity landscaping and habitat
recreation. The mixtures range from
5%-20% wild flora for which most will
be native UK production.
Lawn Seed
We supply lawn seed with or without
ryegrass depending on whether you
require a hardwaring or show lawn,
made to our own specification using
quality cultivars.
Stocked at MVF branches and SCATS
Countrystores, packed in 2kg and
10kg bags.
