A message
from the Chancellor
Welcome to the Islamic Azad University (IAU), one of the most important achievements of the Islamic Revolution in the field of higher education.
As the third world›s largest University with its 600 schools, 1,350,000 students,
11 Hospitals with 1,421 active beds, 400 academic branches, 34,000 academic
members and 2,400,000 graduates, IAU plays a key role in developing Iranian
knowledge and culture.
The University has the mission is to expand complementary education especially
at postgraduate level to meet medical manpower needs of the Country, ameliorate
research opportunities, produce knowledge and technology, increase scientific
publications, and expand its scientific ties with accredited scientific institutions
of the world.
It is extremely difficult to measure the impacts of medical education and research
on our lives. We all know that universities produce knowledge and that knowledge
is beyond boundaries. We have realized that in medical knowledge, we have to expand our horizons in order to be insured that our education will meet global standards. In this context, the Medical Sciences Section and Medical Policy Council
have been established in order to coordinate and supervise all medical branches,
medical schools, hospitals and research centers of IAU.
I hope that the Medical Sciences Section will act as a supreme body to organize all
medical subdivisions of IAU and to acquaint the medical students and staff with
the potentials, assets, and capacities of the University.
Hamid Mirzadeh, MD
IAU Chancellor

Islamic Azad University is one the most crucial achievements of the Islamic Revolution and covers 60% of higher education in different fields of sciences and more
than 40% in medical education.
Regarding the fast growing demand in medical fields for greater internationalization,
more qualitative and effective training programs with multi-professional elements are
planned to initialize a revolutionary approach in training tomorrow›s health experts
with the use of the national roadmap for education, research and Health services.
The Medical Policy Council of Islamic Azad University has been established in order
to coordinate all medical branches, medical schools, hospitals and research centers
of the University. The IAU Medical Sciences supervises 86 branches in the medical
domain, 1798 faculty members, about 61000 students at various levels of medicine, 51
majors at different levels, 1500 active beds in 11 hospitals in the country, 3000 beds in
19 under construction hospitals, 13 journals in the medical domain and H-index of 26.
The Medical Policy Council aims to boost medical education qualitatively and qualitatively, to enhance the medical research projects, to build virtual research centers,
to establish research promotion centers in hospitals, to promote scientific collaboration between Iranian and international universities, to boost exchange between Iranian and world scholars, to design joint degree programs through collaboration with
other universities, to attract students from all over the world in all levels of medical
studies and to improve hospital performance in delivering health care services.
Any offer of assistance, partnership, or collaboration which could assist us to achieve
our goals is warmly welcomed. In the end, I wish to express our sincere willingness to
provide service to research centers, universities, and organizations with similar interests all around the world, and, specifically, the countries in the region.

An Introduction
from Head of
Medical Policy Council
Iran
Iran is rich in culture and history, with a fascinating landscape. Studying at Islamic
Azad University (IAU) in Iran and specifically in Tehran does not only give you
the opportunity to learn a field of medical sciences but will also introduce you to
the culture and traditions of the Iranian people.
History of Medicine in Iran

After 198, the demand for Higher Education in post-revolutionary Iran increased
significantly, as a result, new institutions were opened and additional postgraduate
courses were added to the existing curriculum.
In 1982, Islamic Azad University (IAU) was founded as one of the main achievements of the Islamic Revolution by Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on April
1982, according to Imam Khomeini›s slogan: «Higher Education for all». IAU
started its activities under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution (SCCR) which is a supreme body over the Ministry of Science, Research
and Technology. Four months later, Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was appointed
as the president of the Supreme Council of the University, and Dr. Abdullah Jassbi
was appointed as the Chancellor of the IAU.
The University›s activities quickly expanded throughout the country, so that today
thousands of students are enrolling in different levels and various fields. The certificates issued by this university are signed by the Ministry of Science and Higher
Education. The University admits students through the National Wide Entrance
Examination held by the National (Iranian) Organization of Educational Testing.
As the third biggest University of the world, IAU offers a wealth of facilities,
full time & part time courses with the highest education quality. Studying at the
university, hanging out with other classmates, meeting new professors and conducting research never take place in a vacuum. From food to arts, from history to
geography, from literature to pure sciences, one can never be isolated. Studying in
a different University is a mosaic of all these fascinating factors.
IAU covers 60% of higher education in different fields of sciences and more than
40% in medical education with its 600 schools, 1,350,000 students, 11 Hospitals with 1,421 active beds, 400 academic Branches, 34,000 academic members,
2,400,000 graduates. The University offers fulltime and part-time courses with the
highest quality of education. The courses are designed to be directly relevant to
industry, commerce, and business in various sectors and fields. A special characteristic of the IAU is our ability to meet the needs of not only of Iranian students,
but also of students from around the world. Students can be sure of a challenging
and fulfilling study experience.
