various plants including oilseed Brassica napus, barley, tobacco and poinsettia with focus on
genetic engineering of ornamental crops and molecular farming for plant produced human and
fish vaccines as well as industrial enzymes.

Supervision: I have been supervisor or co-supervisor for 5 PhD students and 5 master students.

served as a guest editor for two special issues and is working on the 3rd special issue.
Coordination and international relations: I have been the coordinator for China relations at
Bioforsk since 2006 and have a strong network with colleagues across Asia, Europe and USA.

12. Expertise and experiences
I received my PhD in 2003 and have extensive experience in tissue culture and
2003genetic engineering of various plants including oilseed Brassica napus, barley,
tobacco and poinsettia. Recently, I have established a research group focusing on
genetic engineering of ornamental crops and molecular farming for plant produced
human and fish vaccines. My research on transgenic poinsettia has also attracted
interest in collaboration in the ornamental industry, both nationally (G3
Ungplanter) and internationally (PLA international (Denmark), Ornamental
Bioscience in Germany, personal communication). In addition, I have acquired
good experience of project management, international collaboration and
networking. I have been the project leader for several projects funded by the
Research Council of Norway shown above. Through these projects, I have
established good international networks in China, North America and European
countries. Since the year 2006, I have been coordinator for China relations at
Bioforsk, to promote research cooperation between Bioforsk and Chinese research
organizations. Up to date, Bioforsk has successfully developed collaborations with
a number of research academies and universities such as the Chinese Academy of
Agricultural Sciences in Beijing, Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences in
Changchun, Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Shenyang, and
Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HAAS) in Harbin. Recently, a
Sino-Norwegian Low-carbon Agriculture Sustainable Development Research
Center was opened on September 7, 2011 at HAAS, in Harbin, China). I was one
of the key persons in making this Bioforsk-HAAS joint research center a reality.
13. Track records:
For all my projects where I have a role either as the project leader or an active partner, I have

accomplished the assigned tasks and produced peer-reviewed publications as well as popular
science articles (publication list in my CV). In addition, all the requested reports to NFR were
sent in on time in all my projects. My genetically modified (GM) poinsettia research funded by
NFR’s BIONÆR program was chosen as web news to be published on the homepage on
December 21, 2012
(http://www.forskningsradet.no/no/Nyheter/Genteknologien_inntar_juleplantene/1253982688009
?WT.mc_id=nyhetsbrev-ForskningsradetNorsk). The compact growth poinsettia plants we have
generated have innovation potential. My research on low cost production of dengue vaccine in
green plants has also made a big media hit with a 2-page report in the largest Norwegian national
newspaper “Aftenposten” on March 5, 2013 (http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/iriks/Tobakkog-gronnsaker-blir-livsviktig-vaksine-7137697.html). This was the first time in more than 10
years that biological research from my institute has been reported in Aftenposten indicating the
societal interest and importance of this “biotechnology for innovation” research that I have built
up over many years with the full support of my national and international collaborators.
