Using Moodle activities: Lesson (Basic)
What is the Lesson activity and how can I use it?
The lesson activity presents a series of HTML pages to the student, who is usually asked to make some sort
of choice underneath the content area. The choice will send them to a specific page in the Lesson. In a
Lesson page's simplest form, the student can select a continue button at the bottom of the page, which will
send them to the next page in the Lesson.
There are 2 basic Lesson page types that the student will see: question pages and content pages. There are
also several advanced navigational pages which can meet more specialised needs of the Teacher.
This guide will show you how to create a linear lesson; this is basically a series of html pages like a
PowerPoint presentation.
How to add a Lesson to your module
First you need to log into Learning Space and navigate to your study module.
Next click the
button at the top right of the page.
In the topic that you want to add the Lesson activity to, select ‘Lesson’ from
the ‘Activities’ menu;
Give your lesson a name;
Note: You can set a time limit for lesson and set time frame that your lesson is available from and to;

For a basic linear lesson, change the maximum number of answers to
two. This will give you two button boxes, one for a next button, and one
for a back button within the lesson.
Note: When creating a quiz lesson you will need to make the number in the ‘maximum number of answers’ box greater,
to accommodate a selection of answer buttons.
Set lesson to ‘practice lesson’ as this example will not be scored
so will not appear in the grade book.
Note: Your lesson can be scored because it can contain questions like a
quiz and also allow tutors to select a path for students to progress
through.
In the ‘Flow Control’ settings enable the ‘Progress bar’ and ‘Display left menu’;
Note: You can restrict access to the lesson to a certain time period or restrict
access to it to students who have to achieve a certain grade in another activity
in the course by checking the ‘Enable’ buttons and setting the dates and times
or changing the ‘Grade condition’;
Now scroll to the bottom of the page and click
to return to your module.
Creating pages in your Lesson

Now you need to add a series of content pages, these are the html pages
with information. This will create the basic lesson which will run in a similar
way to a slideshow with one slide following another.
Click ‘Add a content page’ and then give the page a title and put your page
contents in, you can also copy and paste text from existing documents.
Note: In the contents box you can include text, images, links to websites, documents and so forth. Keep in mind the
point of using a lesson is to make each page short and concise.
Leave both of these
boxes checked
Note: The CONTENT boxes are quite simply the boxes that will create your page buttons – the text that you type into
the description box will appear as a button after you have clicked the ‘add a question page’ button;

In the box marked Content 1, write ‘Next’ in the description and point the Jump to ‘next page’ by
selecting it from the drop down box, this will give your students a button to the next page.
(Leave content 2 blank as this is the first page of the lesson)
Click the
button to create this content page.
The page you have just created now shows up in a table with its title, the type of page, any jumps it has
and the usual row of icons to move, edit, preview and delete;

Again add the title and put in the page contents;
This time in the two content descriptions add ‘back’ and ‘next’, making sure to add the correct ‘Jump’ for
each content section;
Click the
button to create this content page, repeat this procedure until you have all the
pages you need in your lesson.
When you get to the final page of your lesson, rather than writing ‘Next’ and choosing next page as your
Jump, write ‘Finish’ and choose end of lesson as your jump. This will take the students to a page that
says congratulations, end of lesson reached, with a link to return to the main course page;

You can now go through your lesson by clicking on the Next and Back buttons;
