New functions and capabilities are available for Power Systems.

IBM® POWER5 tm

processor-based servers gain a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk/tape capability:

– Three SAS disk drives (#3647, #3648, and #3649)

– SAS EXP 12S Disk Enclosure (#5886)

– A SAS PCI-X disk and tape adapter (#5912)

– A SAS PCI-X RAID disk adapter (#5902)

– Associated SAS cables

• Hardware Management Consoles (HMC) are enhanced for all Power servers with memory upgrades and priced modems:

– Expanded memory capability (#1924, #1933, and #1935)

– Modems become optional features (#0032, #0033, and #0034)

Overview

SAS disk and SAS removable media capability is now supported on the IBM p5-520, p5-550, p5-560Q, p5-570, p5-590, and p5-595 servers. SAS capability allows POWER5/

POWER5+ systems to take advantage of the newer SAS disk and tape technology used on

IBM POWER6 tm

machines. Stop investing in incremental SCSI disk and tape drives, and instead invest in SAS disk and tape drive technology. Gain longer-term capability to acquire disk drives from IBM, as IBM plans to withdraw SCSI disk drives from marketing effective later in

2009.

1

For SAS disk storage, a SAS disk-only I/O drawer, two SAS disk adapters, three SAS disk drives, and associated cables are announced. The EXP 12S Expansion Drawer (#5886) is a 2

EIA 19-inch drawer with twelve 3.5-inch SAS disk slots. Either the PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 SAS

Adapter (#5912) or PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 3 Gb SAS RAID Adapter (#5902) runs the disk in the

SAS EXP 12S Disk Enclosure (#5886). Three different 15,000 rpm disk capacities are offered:

146 GB (#3647), 300 GB (#3648), and 450 GB (#3649). Note that operating systems such as

AIX® or Linux® may not be booted from SAS drives on systems based on POWER5 processors.

For SAS removable media devices, the PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 SAS Adapter (#5912) supports the attachment of SAS tape drives.

Memory upgrades are now available for HMCs 7042-C06/C07, 7310-C06, 7042-CR4, and 7310-

CR3/CR4. These memory upgrades may improve HMC performance for customers using IBM

Description

SAS

SAS disk drives used on POWER5/POWER5+ systems are placed in the EXP 12S SAS disk drawer (#5886). Either 146 GB (#3647), 300 GB (#3648), or 450 GB (#3649) SAS drives can be used. These 3.5-inch SAS disk drives are driven by either the PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 SAS Adapter

(#5912) or the PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 3 Gb SAS RAID Adapter (#5902). These adapters connect to the EXP 12S Expansion Drawer via YO or X SAS cables.

Normal POWER5/POWER5+ disk protection rules apply. With the feature 5912, it is recommended that disk drives should be protected by using RAID 10. With the feature 5902, it is recommended the disk drives be protected by RAID 5, RAID 6, or RAID 10. Hot spare is also supported.

The EXP 12S SAS Expansion drawer (#5886) is a 2U (2 EIA) SAS disk drawer that is placed in a 19-inch rack. It supports up to 12 hot-swap SAS disk drives (#3647, #3648, or #3649) and includes redundant power supplies. These 12 slots are all controlled by one disk controller if a

YO cable is used or two controllers if an X cable is used. Even if two controllers are used, the

12 slots are handled as one block of 12 slots and are not split between the two controllers. The feature 5886 disk drawer has no PCI slots, and the disk controllers (#5902/#5912) that run its disk slots is located in PCI-X slots in the system unit or I/O drawer.

For the feature 5912 disk controller, a SAS YO cable (#3691, #3692, #3693, or #3684) of 1.5

M, 3 M, 6 M, or 15 M length connects the feature 5886 EXP 12S disk drawer. The YO cables provide a single-initiator, dual-path configuration. For increased redundancy, use a pair of feature 5912 adapters and a SAS X cable. This provides a dual-initiator, dual-path configuration.

SAS X cables are available in 3 M (#3661), 6 M (#3662), or 15 M (#3663) lengths.

The feature 5902 adapter has 175 MB of write cache, providing increased performance and allowing the support of RAID 5 and RAID 6. The dual-initiator, dual-path configuration using SAS

X cables is always used. Using pairs of feature 5902 adapters also helps to protect the write cache against a possible single point of failure and loss of data. If a feature 5902 card fails or is removed, the contents of write cache of its paired feature 5902 is written to a disk, and the system continues running. However, until the feature 5902 pairing is re-established, the write cache is not used and performance may be impacted.

SAS EE cables (#3652, #3653, #3654) allow two feature 5886 I/O drawers to be connected together. In this configuration, if both drawers are attached to one feature 5912 port using a

Y0 cable, then all 24 disk slots are treated as one block of slots. Similarly, if two controllers are attached using an X cable, all 24 disk slots are treated as one block of slots and are not split between the two controllers.

To attach SAS removable media devices, use the feature 5912 adapter attached via a SAS AE cable (#3684 or #3685) or via a SAS cable provided with the tape drive.

The EXP 12S Expansion Drawer (#5886) is a 19-inch DASD drawer that has the following characteristics:

• Twelve SAS disk drive slots support up to 12 hot-swap SAS disk drives in mega-pack carriers.

• The enclosure includes redundant ac power supplies and two service managers.

• The EXP 12S uses only two EIA spaces in a 19-inch rack.

• The enclosure attaches to a host server using the appropriate external SAS cables and SAS adapters.

Adapters for the drawer attaching to servers:

• The PCI-X DDR Dual - X4 3 GB SAS RAID Adapter (#5902) is an excellent solution for highperformance applications. Two features support redundant paths with proper cabling to the

SAS drives for mirrored write cache data and mirrored RAID parity footprints between the adapters for superior availability. SAS RAID configurations require the use of two PCI-X DDR

Dual - X4 3 GB SAS RAID Adapters.

• The PCI-X DDR Dual - X4 SAS Adapter (#5912) enables external SAS enclosures to be attached to the POWER5 processor-based servers and I/O attached drawers. Two features support redundant adapter paths with proper cabling to the SAS drives for mirrored RAID parity footprints between the adapters, providing superior availability.

The following SAS cables are available for the EXP 12S 19-inch DASD Expansion Drawer

(#5886):

• SAS Adapter to SAS Enclosure X cable (#3661, #3662, and #3663):

These cables connect two SAS adapters in a host system or remote I/O drawer to the first

SAS disk drawer attached to the adapter port. They give you a dual-initiator, dual-path configuration. These cables attach to feature 5902 and feature 5912 SAS adapters to provide the dual-initiator, redundant path support referenced in those features.

• SAS YO cable features (#3691, #3692, #3693, and #3694) provide connection between a feature 5912 SAS controller adapter in a host system or remote I/O drawer to the first

SAS disk drawer attached to the adapter port. They give you a single-initiator, dual-path configuration. A second SAS disk drawer can be attached to the first SAS disk drawer using two SAS cables (EE).

• SAS Expansion-to-expansion (EE) cables (# 3652, #3653, and #3654) allow a second SAS

EXP 12S disk drawer to be connected to the first SAS EXP 12S disk drawer.

HMC

Memory upgrades are now available for HMCs 7042-C06/C07, 7310-C06, 7042-CR4, and 7310-

CR3/CR4. For any CR3, CR4, C06, or C07 models already installed in the field, 2 GB or 4 GB can be ordered via MES and installed by the customer.

• The new features allow HMC memory upgrade to 4 GB, which is the maximum addressable by the HMC operating system.

• Memory for all HMCs must be installed in identical pairs (2 x 1 GB).

• Customers ordering new 7042-C07 or 7042-CR4 models can only order an additional 2 GB on the original HMC order. The additional 2 GB will be installed by IBM for a 3 GB total.

• If a 4 GB configuration is required, the second 2 GB upgrade will be customer installed only.

Given the preference and usage of the built-in broadband capability of the HMC, IBM will no longer ship a modem with the HMC. Modems will continue to be optionally available for clients who want a modem connection. The following features can be used to order modems:

IBM Europe, Middle East, and Africa Hardware

Announcement ZG09-0332

• External modem (#0032)

• Internal modem (#0033)

If no modem appears on the order, feature 0031 must be selected, which indicates that the modem is not required on the order.

Product positioning

The only size SCSI disk IBM currently offers for AIX/Linux is the 146 GB drive, and because it is planned to be withdrawn from marketing later in 2009

1

, any additional SCSI drive acquisitions should be carefully considered. Refer to Hardware withdrawal (RFA 49568), dated April 28,

2009. Because SAS drives can offer higher performance levels and should be available from

IBM for a longer time period, using SAS disk drives instead of SCSI disk drives for the POWER5/

POWER5+ system is highly recommended in almost all cases. The few exceptions include:

• Adding a partition boot drive (SAS drives are not supported for this function on POWER5/

POWER5+ systems)

• Systems not yet able to move to AIX 5.3, or later; RHEL 4.6/5.1, or later; or SLES 10 SP1, or later

• Very short term need to fill out a small quantity (for example, one or two) of existing empty

SCSI disk slots
