Research Summary
Dark Matter Research
Directional Dark Matter (DM) detectors [1,2,3] are designed to measure the energy as well
as the direction of the nuclear recoils produced in the elastic scattering of DM particles.
The combination of the energy and tracking information allows for an efficient suppression
not only of backgrounds due to electrons, photons, and alphas, but also of more insidious
backgrounds, such as neutrons and solar neutrinos. In addition, directional detection will
allow us to discriminate between galactic DM halo models. This capability is unique to
directional detectors.
I started working on DM directional detection in 2007. Together with colleagues from
MIT (Fisher, Monroe, and Yamamoto), Brandeis (Wellenstein), and Boston University
(Ahlen), I was one of the founding members of the DMTPC collaboration. The detector [5,6]
is a low-pressure Time Projection Chamber with optical readout. The active material is
CF4 , which makes this detector particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions.
Over the past two years our collaboration demonstrated that the DMTPC approach
is well suited for DM directional detection. In 2007 we published the first observation of
the “head-tail” effect in low energy nuclear recoils [7], studied the effects on resolution of
transverse diffusion [7], and measured the scintillation properties of CF4 [8]. In 2008 we
re-designed the amplification plane [9] to provide a 2-D reconstruction of the nuclear recoils
while preserving the “head-tail” capability of the detector and its high gas gain. A 10-liter
prototype was built to study the detector performance on a larger scale and for background
studies. The surface run we conducted in 2009 proved that this detector is capable of
reconstructing nuclear recoils above 50 keV while efficiently rejecting backgrounds from
electrons and alpha particles. The data collected in the surface run were also used to
set our first limit on spin-dependent interactions on protons [4]. An improved DMTPC
detector, with a fiducial volume of 20 liter, is presently under construction at MIT, and will
start taking data underground in the WIPP laboratory in New Mexico in 2010.
Recently, DOE and NSF jointly approved and funded the DMTPCino experiment, for
which I am the Principal Investigator. DMTPCino is a 1-m3 DMTPC detector [5,10] that
will improve the current limits on spin-dependent interactions on protons by two orders
of magnitude. The successful operation of this detector will lay the foundation for a large
(ton-scale) directional Dark Matter detector. This is an ideal experiment for the Deep
Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL).
Over the years, I worked on various aspects of the DMTPC project. My direct contribution is in the area of data analysis: I was responsible for the physics reach studies and I
directed the activity of the simulation/reconstruction/calibration group. I also worked with
my students and my postdocs on the detector design and construction: the two prototypes
that we used to prove the detector concept [7,9] and publish the first observation of the
“head-tail” effect [7] were built and operated by my group.
Research in BABAR
The main goal of my research in BABAR is to search for Physics Beyond the Standard Model
in B meson decays. Constraints on New Physics can be obtained by a comprehensive study

of CP violation in the B system [13] as well as by studying rare B decays such as b → sγ [14]
and b → dγ [15].
CP Violation in B 0 Decays
A precise measurement of the angles and sides of the Unitarity Triangle [13] allows for
a quantitative test of the CKM mechanism responsible for CP violation in the Standard
Model. In 2001, BABAR published the first observation of CP violation in B 0 decays into
charmonium and KS0 [16]. From the time-dependent CP asymmetry of these decays, one
can determine sin 2β with negligible hadronic uncertainties. This measurement improved
with increasing statistics [17,18] to the point where sin 2β has become the best measured
parameter of the Unitarity Triangle [19,20]. I contributed to these measurements in two
areas: B flavor tagging and measurement of the CP asymmetry in the decay B 0 → ηc KS0 .
Flavor tagging, i.e., statistical separation of B 0 and B 0 decays based on the final-state
particles, is a crucial ingredient for the measurement of CP violation since the accuracy
of the CP measurement depends critically on the tagging efficiency and purity. As the
convener of the BABAR Tagging Group, I have been responsible for the development of a
new multivariate tagging algorithm [18], which significantly improved the effective tagging
efficiency over the original algorithm by making better use of the kinematical constraints,
correlations between particles in the final state, and by including new decay modes. The
new algorithm was adopted by the BABAR Collaboration in 2004 and used in more than 25
CP violation publications.
I also worked on the first measurement of sin 2β in the decay B 0 → ηc KS0 [17]. This
mode is theoretically clean but experimentally challenging due to the low branching fraction
and the high final state multiplicity. I was responsible for the main channel, ηc → KS0 K ± π ∓ ,
and for developing an efficient algorithm to reject the continuum backgrounds.
In related research, I measured the branching fraction B(B → ηc K) with ηc → KS0 K ± π ∓ ,
K + K − π 0 , and K + K − K + K − [23], and co–supervised an MIT student who measured the
mass and the width of the ηc meson [24].
Search for New Physics in b → dγ (B → ργ and B → ωγ)
The decays B → ργ and B → ωγ are Flavor Changing Neutral Current processes in which
a b quark decays to a d quark and a photon via an electromagnetic penguin diagram. The
rates of these decays are proportional to the square of the CKM matrix element Vtd . The
ratio of the branching fractions B(B → ρ(ω)γ)/B(B → K ∗ γ) provides a measurement of the
ratio |Vtd /Vts |, which determines one of the sides of the Unitarity Triangle. The comparison
between the values of |Vtd /Vts | measured in our analysis and the one obtained from the ratio
of the Bd0 and Bs0 mixing frequencies provides a novel test of New Physics.
In 2005–2007, I led the B → ρ(ω)γ analysis effort in BABAR. This is a challenging
analysis due to the small signal branching fractions (≈ 10−6 ) and to the large continuum
backgrounds. The use of an artificial neural network, which I developed, was instrumental
to suppress the continuum background at a level that allowed us to observe these final states
and to perform the most precise measurement of these branching fractions. This result was
published in Physical Review Letters [15]. My Ph.D. student Karsten Koeneke was the
leading student on this analysis.

Measurement of Direct CP Asymmetry in B → sγ Decays
The measurement of the direct CP asymmetry ACP in the decay b → sγ offers a sensitive
probe for New Physics. While in the Standard Model the prediction for ACP is very close to
zero, New Physics contributions could increase the predicted asymmetry up to about 10%.
Our analysis measured ACP by reconstructing the b → sγ decay as the sum of twelve
exclusive final states containing a photon, a kaon and n pions. The abundant background
from light-quark events was suppressed by means of multivariate techniques.
The result of this analysis, which improved the measurement of ACP (b → sγ) by a factor
of two, was published in Physical Review Letters [14] in 2008. This work constitutes the
core of the Ph.D. thesis of my student Minliang Zhao.
BABAR Drift Chamber and Commissioning Run
The Drift Chamber [25] is the main tracking device of the BABAR Detector, and also contributes to particle identification through the measurement of dE/dx. Starting from the
construction of the full-length prototype in 1996, I worked on the development, construction,
instrumentation, online software, and dE/dx calibration of the Drift Chamber.
In 1997–1998, I developed the test stand for the front-end electronics [26] in order to
characterize the preamplifier IC, and to test and calibrate the Front End Assemblies before
installation on the Drift Chamber. In 1998–2000, I was responsible for the online calibration
system for the 7000-channel readout electronics. In 1999, the first year of data taking, I
was responsible for the dE/dx calibration and achieved a dE/dx resolution of 7.5%, close
to the design goal of 7%.
I worked on the commissioning of the BABAR Detector as a whole and its online dataacquisition (DAQ) system during the cosmic-ray run (1998–1999). I developed the prototype
online control software that was used in the first data taking with the integrated BABAR
Detector. I also provided training and support to the new BABAR DAQ operators.
Research in DELPHI at CERN
My Ph.D. thesis focused on the measurement of the b-baryon lifetime as a handle for understanding the corrections to the spectator model of b hadron decays. I reconstructed the
Λb baryons in their semileptonic decays by looking for correlations between high-energy
strange or charmed baryons and high-p, high-pT leptons in the same jet. The Λl− [28] and
−
Λ+
c l [29] correlation analyses were the earliest experimental observations of semileptonic
decay of Λb , and allowed for a measurement of the production branching fraction and of the
lifetime of the b baryons. Similar techniques also allowed us to publish the first observation
of the Ξb baryon [30].
I also developed a new track search algorithm that combined information from the
Inner Detector and the Vertex Detector as a starting point for the pattern recognition.
My algorithm improved both efficiency and quality of the tracking, particularly when the
particle underwent a hadronic interaction before the TPC or passed near or through a
TPC sector boundary. With the new algorithm, DELPHI improved the Vertex Detector hit
association efficiency by 12%, and the D ∗ reconstruction efficiency by 36%.

Undergraduate Students:
Since 2003, I have supervised the research of 20 undergraduate students, 9 of whom are
women. Most of my former undergraduate students continued in their physics studies,
and are now graduate students at Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, and University of Oregon.
For my efforts mentoring undergraduates, in 2006 I received the MIT–wide award for the
Outstanding Faculty Mentor for Undergraduate Research. My activity as an undergraduate
advisor was recognized in 2010 when I was awarded the inaugural Buechner Undergraduate
Advising Award.
Undergraduate Teaching
Over the years, I have taught Electricity and Magnetism at various levels:
• 8.021 (F2009). This is a course that I developed for students with a documented
history of failing physics classes. The class met daily in small groups for a combination
of lectures and recitations. The student’s progress was monitored by weekly exams.
The challenge of this class was to find a way to reach out to the students who came in
with a bias against physics, capture their attention, keep them motivated throughout
the semester, and have them pass the class without lowering the high MIT teaching
standards. I am very satisfied with the outcome of my effort: by engaging the students
on a daily basis, I succeed in motivating them to learn (and often even enjoy!) physics.
The satisfaction of the students is reflected in the very positive course evaluation:
6.2/7.0.
• 8.02 (2007-2008). This is the E&M course attended by most MIT freshmen. 8.02 is an
interactive course that integrates traditional teaching with more modern pedagogical
techniques, and is based on the Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) method.
Best students evaluation: 6.3/7.0.
• 8.022 (2003-2007), a course for the more advanced students which requires a solid
mathematical background. The teaching method is traditional: “chalk-and-talk” in a
lecture/recitations format. Best students evaluation: 6.5/7.0.
My efforts in teaching undergraduate classes were recognized in 2007 when I was named
the MIT Cecil and Ida Green Career Development Professor.
